#5147930 As Queues At Suvarnabhumi Grow, Airport Debate Rages

With a population of 70 million, greater than that of the UK, it stands to reason than expansion of the existing airports and even additional airports will be necessary to accommodate growth. London has Heathrow, plus Gatwick, Stansted, Luton, City and St. Pancras. EasyBus and others offer efficient shuttle services.
What does not stand to reason, is that whatever the government does, this and/or the next, the Thai bashers here will criticise whoever - it's a damned if you do, damned if you don't, scenario. Foreigners here expect everything the way they like it, as though there is no one else to consider, and for a fraction of the price 'back home'.
As an interim plan, if moving domestic flights to Don Mueang can take a bit of pressure of Suvarnabhumi, then why shouldn't they. Many of you may be retired, but the world hasn't. All renovations entail some degree of inconvenience. Live with it.

international passengers top 10 -
1. London (Heathrow), United Kingdom:  60.9 million passengers per year
2. Paris, France:  53.15 million
3. Hong Kong: 49.77 million
4. Dubai, UAE: 46.31 million
5. Frankfurt, Germany: 46.3 million
6. Amsterdam, The Netherlands: 45.13 million
7. Singapore: 40.92 million
8. Incheon, South Korea: 32.94 million
9. Tokyo (Narita), Japan: 32.16 million
10. Bangkok, Thailand: 31.41 million

From the comments, it would appear that lack of planning and disregard for the level of convenience until after the event are key complaints. If you expect people to put up with something they consider unreasonable (sic), you are liable to be disappointed. Usually it is worth listening to criticism, and learning from it, rather than trying to suppress it with the usual catchphrases. Get used to it. Just ignore it. It's the local culture. If you don't like it go home, etc. These responses just don't wash. They antagonize and polarize, and achive nothing positive.

#5136935 Foreign-Owned Thailand

Posted Unkomoncents on 2012-03-15 19:51:38

Thais wouldn't need to worry about foreigners ever if they stood even a chance of victory in basic common sense evaluations.  They are right to fear foreigners, as it's highly likely that those foreigners would be significantly more savvy than your average Thai.  This is one country where I'm sure you could find an eager buyer for ocean floor properties or deeds and titles to land on the moon.  Intellectually, this country is like a person in a coma.

#5129710 US$40 Billion Needed Yearly In Asia To To Neutralise Impacts Of Climate...

Posted RickBradford on 2012-03-13 07:01:47

The usual parasites turn up to discuss spending other people's money on a non-problem -- the UN, major banks and finance houses, NGOs and Greenies, totalitarian leftists, government-funded scientists, academia, renewables corporations, mainstream news media.

These are people who have no value whatsoever in the free market, and so they prefer the methods of government, namely politics and coercion, rather than the voluntary transactions of the marketplace — especially when it comes to setting their own remuneration.

This "regulating class" of people promotes the dual beliefs that the “problem” of global warming is very scary and that it is caused by human emissions of CO2. The only solution they offer just happens to be complete regulation of the whole world’s economy by … the regulating class, of course. “Enlightened” self-interest doesn’t come any bigger than this.

It is one of the oldest scams in human history: witchdoctors go to the rulers and say “the Gods are angry, there will be (more) catastrophes … we know how to appease the Gods, but it will cost you.”

And when they start talking about earthquakes and tsunamis in the context of climate change adaptation, you know you've got a 24-carat Class A moron on your hands.

#5128153 Thais Face Challenges Getting Asean Jobs

Posted Sing_Sling on 2012-03-12 15:08:44

Living and working in Malaysia, having lived and worked in Singapore, Thailand and Hong Kong I can only say Thailand should have been so lucky as to be colonised . . . they certainly would have a better infrastructure, laws, education system etc...

I've met very few Hongkies, Malaysians or Singaporeans complain about having been a colony . .. perhaps they can look past their arrogant and childish 'face' and appreciate that it wasn't an all-together bad thing

What a shame that the colonial powers looked at Thailand and decided it wasn't worth it . . . preferring countries like Ghana, Guinea-Bissau and New Guinea

Thais unable to work in Asean, but also many Asean nationalities unable to work here because of Thai language requirements on a day to day basis in these professions.

Result? No change : Thais stay here, and not many foreigners come to take the jobs. Just what those who run this country want.

You don't know anybody in Thailand that would prefer an English speaking  medical practitioners, dental practitioners, nursing services, engineering services, architectural services, surveying qualifications, and accountancy services?

I think the medical dictors and nurses will have the greatest oppurtunity.

#5126880 Thais Face Challenges Getting Asean Jobs

Posted marquess on 2012-03-12 07:19:49

No surprise that  the majority of Thai Engineers/ Architects etc  will be struggling for professional accreditation, they have had a nice  wooly existence where they are and only they can do those jobs in this country-- hence no need to try to improve. I have known a fully qualified architect from the UK married here for years and years but unable to ply  his profession and a Swiss medical doctor who too was prohibited from plying her profession, both were reduced to teaching English. So in truth I have very little sympathy for the position of Thai professionals when it comes to ASEAN, as it is largely  been brought about by the xenophobic/nationalist policies of their government, which if you spoke to most of them in the past and possibly some of them now, they were or are quite happy to lap up.

They just tried to find a way to get some money from the "Farang" And they where successful.

If you don't like it go back where you came from.

500 is fair enough  -  people like you give the rest of us forigners a bad name.

People that choose to overstay their visa's should face the consequences of their actions, and flagrant disregard of another countrys law. So an overstay of 42 days, which is more than most people's trips might lead to detention, deportation, black-listing does not sound unreasonable.

I totally agree, What are these people thinking that they can come to Thailand and just laugh at the law, Shamefull.

what were they thinking you ask?  The same things that humans have thought since the start of our history.

It is a basic human instinct to travel, move, relocate and seek a better life.  No government can ever quash that instinct.  No law can redefine what makes us humans.  This instinct caused the spread of humans all over the far corners of the earth, do you really think it will just disappear from our souls because an institution passes a law?

Personally I have never broken an immigration law, I am not even saying that overstaying is the right thing to do, but it is easy for me to understand the motivation.  Jumping through bureaucratic hoops to pursue life gets boring quick, and beyond that it can sometimes completely prevent you from staying in the place you have made your home.

The freedom of movement has a much longer history than any immigration law.

I agree completely. Spot on.

Excluding hospital treatment or a family emergency there is really no excuse for overstaying more than a day or two. I would suggest that a fair proportion of those who overstay are the sort of expat that the kingdom wants rid of and most decent expats want rid of.

I'm not sure about banging people up for this but  I'm all for blacklisting those without a valid excuse and making them pay their own way home. US and Australia to name but a few wouldn't stand for this crap, so why should Thailand. Play the game straight and you don't get into bother

I Have a friend that is on a 2 years overstay he has a Thai wife and a child an is working and looking after them, If he returns to the UK and if he is very lucky he may get a min paid job and be able to send a bit of money back but will never be able to save the money to return to see his wife and child if he cannot find work which will probably be the case then his wife and child will go hungry so if that is a crime the I think the law stinks, I am amazed at the compassion you senior member's show its about time you lot got of you golden high horse.

Not everyone that overstays if a criminal

Have there been any reports of people attempting to leave with long overstays lately? Are people really going to jail?

I think this is just shameless fear mongering by Pattaya One and ThaiVisa to bring interest to their publication.

FFS the 'news' today was nothing more than an advertisement for Pattaya One, it said basically nothing about Immigration or Overstaying.
Yes, people are going to jail for overstay when attempting to leave.

Did you download the PDF version with the full story?
Here it is:
http://www.thaivisa....ya-one-issue-1/
George, you must have a different copy than the version published on the link. I don't see anything new here or actual jail sentences being handed down.
Short jail stays for overstays are handed down every day.

Please post your editorial questions direct to Pattaya One team here:
http://www.thaivisa....157-pattayaone/

George and all people who 'are in the know' so well about the new situation for overstay..
Why not show a single case of those new rules actually enforced.. Where are the 'long' overstayers that have been jailed the past week ?

Because at the moment we all only see one thing , Thai Visa made a deal with Advert sellers  (oops sorry.... journalists) of Pattaya One ...
who claim to have inside info yet fail to come up with any source that actually is named ( or is this a deep throat story that we can not check)

And George: Yes people actually are jailed every day for a short time but ONLY when they do not have the ability to pay the overstay fine or do not have a valid ticket out of Thailand.

My lawyer asked immigration officials and they were very clear : have your valid ticket, have your 20.000 Baht and DON'T have a criminal record in Thailand and they do not care even when you have 10 years of overstay.

Now proof me and my lawyer wrong and show me the overstayers actually being jailed and that have the above. I will eat my words.

it is a shame that Thai Visa is using sensationalism to create hits and sell a rag like Pattaya One , shame on you
