Hond Wave 125I

2012-04-18 19:29:44

Recently bought a Wave 125i, and in general seems to be a good bike.
Just some observations:
* Why on earth have they flipped the position of the indicators and the horn around? On my click, you get from top to bottom the high/low beam switch, then the indicators and on the bottom the horn switch. On the wave you get first the horn switch and below that the indicator. Very annoying when driving both bikes alternating...

* Petrol level indicator. When are they ever going to get that one right! At least this one is rather linear (i.e. not sitting at full for 80 km and then suddenly drop to empty over next 30 km), but why, when the indicator is completely below the the red empty area, there is still 2 liters left out of the 5.4 capacity? For me I'd think that having about 1 to 1.5 liter (50 - 80 km worth of petrol) left when hitting the top of the red area, and empty when at the bottom would be ok...

Apart from that, excellent bike, smooth engine, smooth power throughout the rev range, excellent starting, and of course the legendary Honda Wave "unbreakability"!
Slightly disappointing engine power, seems to be only on par with most 110cc twist and go's, both acceleration and topspeed, presumably as they all use higher compression ratio engines...

Economy is brilliant (almost 60km/l), while financially not making much of an impact, it does give a pretty good range between fill ups (over 250 km with plenty reserve, when of course totally ignoring that silly petrol indicator)...

Htc Touch Pro

I have an older HTC touch pro, bought in Europe. By accident found out that the european model has HSDPA on 900 Mhz (850 Mhz for all non European models), so mine does 3G on AIS/One2call.

Now, when my phone settings are on auto (automatically switch between GSM and WCDMA), the thing eats through my battery in 10 hours flat. Without using it!.

Forcing it to GSM only, which stops it detecting/using 3G, and it goes back to normal, i.e. about 36 to 48 hours of battery with average use. Even heavy use, both phon and data, and it would only need to be charged once a day.

When WCDMA is enabled, at the place where I spend most my time (which unfortunately is work :) ) it is constantly switching between WCDMA and GSM, indicated by either showing the E symbol for GSM (Edge), or the H symbol for WCDMA (HSPA).

So probably the constant scanning for the different networks seems to eat the battery. The phone usually is warm to the touch, indicating rather heavy use of the phone module.

Do any other phones have this problem when in areas with weakish 3G signal?

I can force it to WCDMA only, which seems to increase battery life, however at work the signal is weak, and drops away in places, which stops me from receiving phone calls...

New Traffic Signs

The sign in the above picture is put in 2 places.
One at the right hand side of the overpass entrance of the new highway to Bkk (when coming from Central Pattaya).

The other one at the left side of the road where you enter the new highway when coming from North Pattaya.

Apparently this means that bicycles, motorbikes and trucks with a trailer are not allowed on there.

When coming from central Pattaya one could argue the usefulness due to the way the overpass can be a risk to those type of vehicles, but I don't see the issue when coming from North Pattaya. Also, when coming from North Pattaya, the sign is positioned that it would also prohibit those vehicles to use the shortcut to the railroad bypass (when you keep left)...

Or did the cop on his white police bike put them there himself (they look rather cheapish compared to the other signs around there), as he was fining bikes one after the other just after the bridge over the railroad....

True 3G In Pattaya

2011-07-04 21:10:35

Terrible the last week.
Extremely slow (actually slower then AIS Edge), time outs, disconnects, the lot.

Nothing wrong with signal, this is very good, and at 4 am speeds can go over 3 mbps.

Early evening, mostly under 50 kbps (yes, that's dial-up), sometimes momentarily it goes at maybe 80 kbps, and the odd 220 kbps spike (less then 2 seconds).

See screenshot.

True 3G

2011-05-01 21:10:14

Passed all main fixed line internet providers, and none can supply (full, wait 2 months etc).
And with AIS Edge gone down the drain last week, Dtac hardly better, decided to go for true 3G.

True confirmed that at my location I should get close to full signal strength and good service.

Now I'm trying the thing out (after splashing 2,000 Baht on their 3G modem), and should it be a surprise that it is hardly better then Edge????????

I'm hoping I'm doing something wrong, but wouldn't know what. The thing registers on the 3G network (blue light on, and the signal strength says 98% WCDMA).
Then when I want to connect I have to hit the connect button around 60 times (everytime I get "the remote party ended the connection"), then suddenly it connects.

The indicator then starts going up and down, between 30 and 98%, sometimes the thing seems to lose signal altogether, sometimes it stays on for a few minutes.
Sometimes it indicates WCDMA, sometimes HSPA, sometimes HSUPA. Flicks around all the time...

The only thing much better seems to be latency, down from 3000 msec+ to a mere 160 msec (Singapore)

Speeds slightly higher then on Edge.

Maybe I'll try a USB extension cable (don't have one handy), because the thing also seems to be so power hungry that it will not work on the front USB ports of my PC (same as my external drive, all the other USB stuff works just fine from the front ports)
