Well, from the answers so far I decided that it was probably the internal fan which was causing the problem, so this afternoon I went into Tukcom Pattaya. I explained the situation to several of the repair shops on the third floor asking how much, how long etc. to clean and replace/repair a faulty fan. Most of the shops wanted 500 to 800 baht for cleaning and 1000 to 1800 to replace the fan. One shop said he wouldn't be able to replace the fan because it's an old model, and he would clean the computer and repair the fan for 800 baht all in. All the other shops said they had a replacement fan in stock (or could get one) if needed. I'm thinking that the shop who quoted 800 all in is my favourite at the moment. Any opinions?

When did you clean your computer physically from Dust inside (vacuum cleaner)?
I opened up the back about a month ago for the first time and got rid of some dust by blowing (mouth, not vacuum) around. I then used an old toothbrush to carefully try to remove dust that was sticking. There wasn't too much dust around. That is the only time I've ever had the back off except when I took it into Tukcom, Pattaya, and had them add some extra memory about a year ago.

CPU usage is running between 0% and 6%. Largest is Firefox which is showing at 118,260k. Then explorer exe. at 14,660k,  dwm.exe. at 8,716k. Total of 44 processes. Is that excessive?

Assume the noise is the fan. Have you looked at task manager to see what might be causing it to run hot?

I started using a WD external hard drive recently and the software that came with it, make the CPU run flat out all the time, causing the fan to run on high speed all the time also. And this was even when the hard drive was not connected. Initially i solved the problem by going into task manager and forcing it to stop. Recently i downloaded an update to the WD software and it has stopped doing it.

Perhaps it could something along these lines - a new program.
Are you saying that it may be the fan inside the PC? It doesn't seem to be the fan which is plugged in to the USB because when that's unplugged the PC is still noisy. If it's the fan inside the PC, can I cure that?

The headline "Thailand" really grabbed me as a must-read post. I can't help though, but I'm sure you'll get lots of really helpful replies.
