Newbeer At Duke'S

2011-09-03 16:44:10

Dropped in at Duke's, they now have Fuller's London Porter in 500ml botttles.  I'm not British and never have been to England, so I have no idea it this is supposed to be a good ale or not.  That's not terrible important though..   But this one IMO tastes dam_n good in this climate, perhaps good enough to go back to Duke's if only for the beer.  They serve it much colder than a porter would normally be served, way cold in fact, but here it warms up quick and since it's a fairly light bodied beer it goes down pretty well even when very cold.   Only 5.4% alcohol and tastes like a desert food.

Offshore Money In Singapore

2011-08-10 10:05:43

I've noticed a number of people in this forum saying that they are parking their money (or at least a portion of it) in Singapore or else recommending that others do so.  Just wondering, how do those of you who are doing that get a return on the money that you park there?  At least since 2008 Singapore banks have been paying essentially zero interest unless you keep the money in an account denominated in a currency other than SGD, and Americans are generally ineligible to buy securities in Singapore.  So how to you get a return out of your money?  Just park it in a bank account and hope that exchange rates drift in your favor over time?  Put it in a foreign currency fixed deposit account?  Or are there other investment vehicles there that a nonresident can take advantage of?

Re-Entry Permit With Non-Imm Oa Visa

2011-04-21 21:29:19

I have a OA visa that was issued outside of Thailand in May 18, 2010, entered Thailand for the first time in June 2010, and have left & reentered Thailand a few times since.  Latest reentry into Thailand was April 19, 2011 and the stamp in my passport says that I can stay until April 2012.

Since my original OA visa was issued in May 2010 I thought that I'd need to renew/extend it by May 2011 and that I'd need to show that I had 800K baht in a Thai bank account.  So I went to immigration in Chiang Mai today with the intention of renewing the visa and brought along documentation on my bank account as I thought to be required.

However, the immigration officer in Chiang Mai told me that I shouldn't be renewing my OA visa, that instead of should buy a multiple entry reentry permit for 3800 baht and that once I had that I can continue to reenter Thailand until April 2012.  He wasn't the least bit interesting in seeing my banking details.  So I bought the permit, and from the stamp it sure looks like I'm legal until April 2012.

But what I'm wondering now is what will happened in April 2012.  By then my OA visa will be almost a year beyond it's original expiration date.  Would the reentry permit keep that visa "alive", so that I'd still be able to renew it from inside Thailand in April 2012?   Or in April 2012, would I would need to apply for a new OA visa (from outside Thailand) all over again?
