27 baht? That is only 7,000 kip! Better keep your local to yourself as that is the cheapest I have ever heard of it been sold!

You can get it for 5500 kip a bottle direct from the Beerlao lorry drivers. Don't tell anyone though Posted Image

What did your wife actually say, did she say it was a bad thing or a good thing?

I would imagine your wife would have a fine balancing act to play as you are a farang, there may be a lot of expectation on her via you.

There may also be people in the village that look forward to the event. Interesting topic.

She has told me she doesn't agree with it either.

On another occasion they were collecting for something else for the wat ( i think they all needed top ups for their mobiles or something). The wife gave as normal but when she put 100 baht in the dish, the guy actually started hassling her, asking why because she has a farang, didn't she put more money in. this was in front of the neighbours. she just walked away but he kept on talking. she turned around and walked back over, put her hand in her purse again, opened it and then put her hand in the dish and took the 100 baht back. the guy couldnt believe it and neither could the neighbours.  Posted Image

From what I see he was not being given a chance to get his view across so he was being sarcastic in suggesting that the house speaker was a dictator.

#5248829 For Those Of You Who Are Considering Stopping Drinking

Posted cheynewalk on 2012-04-25 15:26:49

Here is my situation.  53 years old, retired and spend most of each year equally in thailand and bali, with a couple of side trips to malaysia and back to australia each year.  As befitting the expat lifestyle I eat and drink with gusto.  I average at least 3-4 large bottles of beer a day and probably 5-7 large on weekends watching the footy.  At any rate too much and I know it. My only saving grace was I exercised for 1 hour each day brisk walking, religiously.

In early march I returned to oz for my annual check up and the doctor told me the bad news.  I had high blood pressure, tachycardia (high pulse rate), high cholesterol, my blood sugar was bordering on pre-diabetic and I was 20 kg overweight.  He said I had to lose weight otherwise I was heading into real danger territory re heart problems and diabetes.  I knew the only way I could lose weight was to stop drinking.  For me alcohol is a double whammy as not only do I get the high calories from the beer, but I also tend to eat more when I'm drinking and crap food at that.

So I stopped drinking 7 weeks ago and the only other dietary change was to eat salad once a day and rice only once a day. 7 weeks is the longest period I have ever gone without drinking since I started when I left school.  I must say I sleep better (only get up to pee once a night now instead of 3 or 4 times before) and feel much better physically and mentally.  My sexual libido and erectile function is the best it's been since I was a young man, much to the delight of my balinese girlfriend. And I am saving 15,000 baht/month! Today I went to the pharmacy for a weigh in and blood pressure check.

I have lost 10 kilos, my blood pressure is on the low side of normal and my pulse rate has dropped 20  beats back to the normal range.  I am sure when I have my blood glucose and cholesterol checked next time they will have improved also.  All this from stopping drinking.  I guess my body is trying to tell me something!

nope, I make friends easily, i just cant abide dick heads,  just  like yourself.
If you have anything constructive to say, I appreciate it. If not, then you are one of the knobs I try to avoid. So anyway, back to my question !

Ajay

You sound like you are relatively new to Thailand so its good that you are seeking the advice of others.  I like everyone else here has heard sin sod go for 20k to 300k and in some cases much much more. My wife before we were married was offered 1,000,000 bt for marriage and Ive heard other women now asking for 1m bt which is obsurd.  I was lucky she loved me and wasnt just chasing money.

The woman you met sounds nice and I wish you the best what ever you do so I will give you my thoughts for you do with as you please.
A) She doesnt speak english and though you seem like a nice guy to her she really doesnt know you or you her. You understand this but her parents are pushing for a commitment. This clearly demonstrates that this girl is under pressure from the parents to marry you so there will be a farang in the family to take care of everyone. Never believe that YOU are MORE important that her family. She will marry you just to take care of her family. Doesnt mean she wont grow to love you or take care of you but dont under estimate the pressure she is under. On the other hand ... in the past and currently there are many aranged marriages so if a girl gets to choose her husband ... it may not be a bad thing.
Posted Image If you do become engaged you will want to discuss the sin sod before hand so you will know what you are in for ahead of time. I agree with most here. If you do pay a sin sod it should be around 100k. If there is more to the story such as ex husband, kids, less than stellar past or what ever reason she isnt married you would have negotiating room. Im all for not paying more than you should but keep in mind the more you are willing to give the more proud you wife will be of YOU.
C) Many farang new to Thailand want to marry the quiet, soft spoken, demure, subserviant asian woman they have come to know. Dont fall for this!!! If you think Thai women are quiet, shy, soft spoken etc.....You have never pissed one off!!  If you have never seen or felt the turmoil caused by a beautiful 5ft 100lb pissed of wife hell bent on chaos and distruction with YOU in mind........ummmm yehhh ...welcome to Thailand.  You will date a kitten and marry a tiger.
D) Dont forget the cultrual differences. She will do things that make no sense to you but make perfect sense to her. There will be times when you have to bite your tongue when staying at her house. Its better to ASK her why she did something and learn about the lifestyle.
   1) She will see and REMEMBER EVERYTHING
   2) She will judge you based on this
   3) Study the language. It will earn you some respect with her family and in her village.
   4) If she is truely poor .. she may see you trying to take care of her like nice hotels, restaurants etc as wasting money or not being  good  with money.  However you buying nice things for the family ...completely different
   5) Expect a double standard. You can both do the same thing but when she does it ... its different.
   6) Always give her your opinion if she ask a question. "Do/Wear whatever you like" will be taken as indifference or lack of caring for her. Always tell her what you think she should do.

All this being said.... Thai women are wonderful creatures that will make you life a joy. My wife is the most wonderful woman I have EVER known. I am a very lucky man.   Good luck to you ... take is slow....pay attention and dont let you heart over run your head.

Ajay,

Excellent advice! however, whilst my experience is very similar we differ on one point, I married a Tiger that has become a very contented, SECURE, happy kitten who is the best wife I can imagine.   I gave her 100% trust and security, I think some posters on TV miss the power of this and wonder why they get the negative experiences.

OP if she turns out to be "the one" be brave enough to treat her as an equal and your life will probably be great, like all things in life you'll get out what you put in.

#5146414 Strange Thing Happened At Swampy

Posted bubba on 2012-03-19 11:10:12

Another "me too" on your post, although out of 100 or so trips, I did get a fast meter one time, about two months ago. About halfway home I mentioned to the driver "you know, at this point the fare is usually about 100 baht, but your meter is showing 180 baht". He apologised profusely and said that this was a rented taxi that he had just picked up today, and told me just to pay him whatever the fare usually is. I don't know if that would have been the case had I not known what the fare was supposed to be, but still, one out of 100 isn't bad.

i sometimes wonder if I'm living in a different Thailand to half of TV.

I have done the Swampy to Sukhumvit taxi run around 100 times since it's opened.  It is ALWAYS around 220-250 plus the tolls plus the 50 baht levy.   Only once did it reach 300 and that was because I hit the rush hour - big deal.

And yet everyone else on TV seems to have only bad experiences.

Allegedly.
