Flying In, Buying A Bike And Touring Thailand / Laos

2011-12-16 07:20:19

In November 2012, a friend of mine plus a friend of his want to fly into Thailand and purchase two Phantom Fire Edition, 4 stroke, 200cc motorbikes.

They would like to purchase the bikes and start their tour in Ubon Ratchathani.

At some stage they want to cross over into Laos for a few weeks of touring there also.

A few concerns I have with this is:

Can a tourist purchase a motorbike without a third party (Thai or local based expat) present?

If so, can they do it on a 30 day visa on arrival or will they need something else to arrive in Thailand on?

Once purchased (with cash) what else is needed to be able to cross the border into Laos.

At the end of their tour they would like to ship the bikes back to Australia.

Any information on the laws regarding visas and buying a bike or advice on shipping back to Australia would be greatly appreciated.

Converting Video Tapes To Dvd'S (Digital) In Ubon

2011-10-12 20:32:38

I have a about 20 hours of home video footage saved onto 20 mini DV cassettes. Does anyone know someone in Ubon who can convert them into a digital format and burn them onto DVD's as well as saving them to an external hard drive?

Please Help Me Find A Family Friendly Resort

2011-09-07 19:15:41

I am hoping some people here may be able to help me make chose a resort for an upcoming holiday.

My family consists of my wife (Thai) and our three kids aged 5, 4 and 4 months. We have lived in Thailand off and on for the last 4 years but have recently moved back to Australia. We will be back in Thailand around Christmas time and will be spending most of our time in Ubon as well as out in the village.

For one week of our stay I want to splash out and head to a resort. We are very flexible in regards to what we want but there are a few important things. We are chasing some luxury. We would need a two bedroom unit at a minimum. As we are not all that interested in anything outside the resort walls the place would need to have a lot of facilities such as swimming pools, kids rooms, play grounds etc. Of course we would leave the resort from time to time so a nice location would be a bonus. We would prefer being right on the beach but would be quite happy in the mountains around Chiang Mai or even Downtown Bangkok. To be honest it doesn't even have to be in Thailand but would consider Denpasar and Singapore as well as we can fly via these places either on the way to or from Thailand.

A bonus would be one of those club med type places where they have activities for the kids that are supervised by resort staff.

My wife and I love good quality food and the occasional drop of red or a cold beer but are not into bars/clubs etc. Budget wise, there isn't really one but I am not into spending crazy money either so I dunno, around the 5,000 - 7,500 baht per night mark?

I realise this information does not narrow things down all that much but like I said, we are very flexible and hearing personal experiences from people of their favourite places is what I am chasing.

Cheers.

Buying And Laying Turf In Thailand

2011-03-16 23:09:12

Hi all,

I have never dealt with turf before so am flying a little blind here.

I have a small section of my yard that I want to lay with turf. Approx 12m x 10m.

The nearest place that has it for sale is Ubon a 2 hour drive away. The stuff for sale is pretty sick looking and someone today told me it is best to get it straight from Bangkok as fresh as possible. This makes a lot of sense obviously but any ideas on how to get 120sqm of turf delivered to the boondocks of Ubon?

My other concern is how do I lay it? What preparation needs to be done?

Cheers

Tourist Visa For In-Laws To Australia

2011-03-07 20:18:23

Hi everyone,

I am in the process of filling in 3 x 48R forms for my SIL, her husband and their daughter for a 3 month visa to Australia. I have done this a few years ago for another sister in law and her husband with no problems but have either forgotten some information or realise that things may have changed since then.

Can I use my Credit Card details on the form where the space is provided for it? (Ie does the Bangkok embassy accept CC payments)

Is it any better that I personally drop the forms and their passports in myself or do I just post it all by registered mail? (They live in Ubon where I am currently visiting)

Do I take it to the embassy or I think it is called the Thai CC building further down sathorn road closer to the river?

I would really like to have them over for 4 months. If I apply for a 6 months visa but they are not convinced can they offer a 3 months visa instead or do they just say no to 6 and then I have to reapply for a 3 month one?

Is a 6 month one more expensive then 3? Any idea what the costs actually are?

I think that is it for now! Thanks for any help that may be forth coming.
