#5272582 Innovative Thai Advertising With A Risk Of Losing Your Bank Card

ATM WARNING
Innovative Thai Advertising

I am spending a few days on Koh Samui with my family, one of my favorite tropical islands. The place has everything: from unspoiled beaches and endless coconut plantations, to high-end dining and a good night life. Although I was here mainly for business related reasons I had a great time.

This morning I drove from our villa to the French bakery to buy a baguette for breakfast and then wanted to get gas, when I realized I did not bring enough cash. So I stopped at an ATM (every 7-11 and Family Mart has an ATM here, meaning that you are never more than a few hundred meters away from one) to get some more Thai Baht. In Thailand you normally first get your receipt, then your money and only then your bank card. Not smart, because people may forget their cards after taking their money, but that’s a different story.

Anyway, I got my receipt and money and was waiting for my card to come out. After waiting for about 10 seconds the card still did not come out, and I got a bit worried that my card may have been lost. But that was not the case, because when I looked at the ATM screen I saw an ad with the question whether I liked the advertising or not. Only after clicking that I would get my card back!

I have seen a lot of ATMs all over the world, and many of them have advertising on it. Either before you start, during the transaction or you get your money. But this is the first time that I was asked to let the bank know whether I liked the ad before getting back my card! An innovative idea, but I hope China won’t start copying this.

Funny thing is Pattaya always gets bashed, yet its jammed packed every weekend.

Pattaya in fact does have more to offer if one bothers to look.

Of course if you travel here and stay near Walking St or Soi Buakhao, all you see is the red light district, HOWEVER

Pattaya DOES have everything for everyone, just need to open your eyes and move away from the certain areas

Of course it's packed every weekend but not for the reasons they are stating!

who is they? and what are "they" stating?

Myself and my GF.  5 engineers from her company.  Bjorn and his family from Denmark.  Enrico from Italy now working in London with his GF.  Frank (owns restaurants in the US) and his Thai wife and her family.  It is a Thai holiday every one has a couple of days off.  Stay at good hotel.  Swim in pool.  Eat at international restaurant.  See movie.  Take bubble bath in hotel room (don't have tub at home).  Shopping at Central.  Hilton buffet lunch.  Check out the Russian chicks shopping in short shorts while GF is looking for pillow cases.  All of this within easy walking distance.  No Smog.  No taxi.  No cops.

I really don't have an opinion as to what an adequate wage is for the Thai workers, but I don't quite understand how anyone could think that if you force companies to raise employees wages that you are automatically "injecting" those raises into the economy. Wouldn't it be more likely that the companies will adjust the prices of their products to compensate for having to pay higher wages? And if this happens, isn't this going to just raise the cost of living for the very same people who receive the wage increases?
The only way I can see a variant here is if the only companies that had to raise the amounts they paid in wages were export only companies.

Of course:
1) less sale and export: laying off some worker: That eats already most of the positive thing, unless you devalue the Baht.
2) all prices will go up

If you want to do something to get the people more wealthy than offer free education. Quality education. That will also push the lowest salaries in the long term.
But who is interested in anything longer than till the next election.
What planet are you on? The strategy has always been to keep them stupid so that they don't wake up to the fact they are living in a caste system. And Vietnam with solidarity and brotherhood is going light years ahead and has already wiped out the Thais prestigeous Homali rice market. One must face the facts - Thailand is in economic decline and this is why we are seeing epidemic criminal violence. And it is going to get a lot worse with the ensuing economic downturn. The Vietnamese grow the rice, The Thais watch the rice grow, and the Laos listen to the rice grown. You will not change this fact.

When Mr. Thaksin comes back all their troubles will be over. He will make them rich, just like he and his philanthropic family.
No worries, life will be good. Trust him.

Of course and he started already.
First he made himself rich
than he made his family rich
than he made his extended family rich
than he made his cronies party comrades rich
on the way he made a couple of police and judges rich

Just need to wait till it reaches everyone.
You saw at the last election he handed out 500 Baht for the poor to help them.....
For sure the poor labor are the next

Why is it whenever there is a discussion happens unrelated to Taksin, some poster has to throw in some comment about Taksin?

What's happening is basic economics 101 and has nothing to do with Taksin. The only thing it does is up his posting count.

Lame.

This comes as no surprise
IMO Thai people have for a long time lived beyond their means.
For so many Thais as soon as they get their monthly salary at
the beginning of the month they rush of to go shopping or they
go out for meals. Then when the last 7 - 10 days of they either
have no money left for food / water and they spend the last few
days of the month eating mama noodles.
They have no concept of saving and budgets, yet so many have
IPhones and Bloackberry's. Priorities are so out of whack, they
eat and be happy today and they do not think or worry about
tomorrow

#3780420 Would You Like An Official Immigration Id Card?

Posted electau on 2010-07-29 06:47:09

Yes there is a need for a card for foreigners in Thailand that can be used for ID purposes.

You should not have to carry your passport with you at all times, your passport and visa information is on the immigration database. Thais are not required to carry their passport at all times when in for example Australia or NZ.So why in Thailand. The problem is that immigration law and legislation has never kept up with modern technology.
