#5335379 Hang Dong Expats Meet Up?

I have seen these sort of threads before and have surely been tempted to participate and meet up.

But I think most of these are a load of hot air and rarely does anyone turn up anyway, so I don`t bother.

If this was the real deal and some did turn up, I would be interested to hear what transpired?

You got that one right, be interesting to see the long (or possibly short) list of excuses and apologies, this is where the creative talents of posters begins to show. Well you see, I was going to come and was in fact on my way there when unavoidably a meteor, not a big one mind, crashed down a few feet away and injuted this old man who was on his way to the temple along with his thirteen grandchildren ........Posted Image

The issue about import licenses is really aimed at retailers. Having large quantities shipped to you immediately means "retailer" in the minds of the customs folk. That's one point.

Another is that if the customs people have any difficulty atr all in knowing what the stuff is so that they know what duty rate to apply (and having to look it up by chemical name in a book qualifies as difficulty for these folk) they will seek to solve the problem by getting it off of their desks and onto someone elses, and the FDA is a real favorite for that purpose since it serves as something of a black hole. Months pass before anything emerges from them, if ever. .

Lastly as others have said, courier services like DHL and Fed Ex maximize problems. You';d think it's be the opposite, but in LOS it is not. Furthermore, shipment by courier adds to the impression that you are  receiving it for commercial purposes.

In short: small quantities, sent by regular air mail, is the answer. If you can contrive to have it be hand addressed and not from a commercial vendor (i,.e if you have an obliging friend or relative), even better.

Who was it who beat Earl 'The Pearl' Strickland (American 9-ball hall of famer) in the Mosconi Cup 9-ball tournament on his first appearance in the tournament without even knowing the rules and playing with a snooker cue? What's his name again? Oh yes... Ronnie O'Sullivan.

Isn't buying pre cooked food just laziness.Very few people I would suggest don't have kitchen. Buying mashed potaoes and  casserole packs when you can cook up more than you need at home, and leave what you dont use, in the fridge for another day. Maybe a poll on who uses the fresh food markets and saves heaps of money against buying at Rimping/Tops would confirm that the take away mentality is alive and well in CM.

That same logic can be applied to every consumer good under the sun.   Do you also buy freshly cut trees to carve your own furniture?   Do you buy cotton to make your own clothes?  Both of those would would save you heaps more money than just going to the store and buying pre-made items.  Does that mean you're just lazy?

Its really about convenience, I guess..   Just as you probably lack the time and the skills necessary to convert raw cotton to thread, weave it to cloth and then stitch your own clothes, the same concept applies to other people when it comes to preparing food.

Some of us are not old retirees, with nothing better to do that waste our time cooking elaborate dinners while we wait to die.   Some of us have full time jobs where we put in 60, 80 hours a week and/ or don't know how to cook. Sure I could squander what precious little free time I have left over in the week to try to prepare a casserole.   But I'd much rather drop a little coin on a pre-made one and be able to dedicate my remaining free time to more meaningful pursuits.

"...........wait to die."  Come on, that's a bit strong. I'm a retiree and I don't have enough hours in the day to do all the things I want to do.
Hi
gennisis Please before you post about Sausage King Get your facts right we do not sell mash potato or gravy at 120 Baht We sell at 70 Baht each But we do sell sausage with mash and gravy as a ready made meal at 129 baht. We sell our meals much cheaper and much better quality then the rest. Maybe somebody put you up to this post ??? if you look at our section in Rimping we have put a price list up so customers can see clear our cheap prices before they buy Not like some who sell at Rimping for nearly double our price.
This whole thing of bashing of SK is no different than the jealous competitors who bash the success of the Dukes, jealous bookstore owners who bash Gecko's success, etc., etc. It really gets old.

OK I have to ask it being as no one else will.
Where is the best place to die?

If you must, hellodolly, die in an Isaan village.  Everyone will have a party, and pop you into the incinerator, and bob's your uncle.

Only thing is, tell them to make sure you're dead first;  there have been cases where the corpse was lying on the floor of his house, being respected, when he sat up and said, "Hey, what's going on?"

MIne is from Isaan, and  I was talking to her the other day about reincarnation. She asked "what actually is reincarnation?" I said to her, "well, its when you die and come back as something completely different." "So, I could come back as a pig?!" she laughed
I  said, "you"re not listening are you.....?    love you!"

#5322477 Advice On Living In Rented House Without Speaking Thai

Posted eyecatcher on 2012-05-22 17:20:07

Of course Mac, thats the ideal and sensible scenario, but the OP wants the rented house sooner rather than after 5yr learning Thai only to realise he can order a bloody nice meal, NOT discuss deposits, house rules, and lekky bills.

I would say find yourself a trusted Thai speaker, friend, even a tuk tuk driver just to take along to ask your pertinant questions. I find Thai people most helpful, even when you dont always need their help.

Crossing traffic on foot in Thailand reminds me of an old arcade game called Frogger. With about the same results.

Ha! I just used all the old Frogger moves to cross the road in front of RAM Hospital, a little left here, quick move forward, back to the right, shift, shift, fast move forward - worked like a charm.  I swear I could hear the theme music playing in the background.

I see quite a few old farang men who have conned themselves into believing they are young again.

Hey, I resemble that remark. It was only last night I was told I was a very hansum man  Posted Image
DA: I hope you havent got HMS;it’s not the first time I’ve heard of the disease called hansum man syndrome (HMS) which is why I am thankful that my undeniably less than hansum appearance serves as an adequate barrier to infection. For those who may not be familiar with this debilitating disease allow me to educate you.
HMS is caused by hearing “You hansum man” so often that one begins to believe it. These poor souls find themselves unable to tell the difference between being told they are a hansum man by women hoping to separate them from their money and actually being considered a handsome man by women who have no financial incentive for making such proclamations
As the disease progresses the sufferer may develop a dangerously overinflated ego. If the ego, located between the legs...I mean temporal and frontal lobes, swells large enough it can begin to press against the frontal lobe which will impact his ability to reason. This pressure, if not relieved, may cause the afflicted to begin fancying himself a bit of a ladies man and that young, nubile, attractive women of particular races are genetically more inclined to being attracted to aging, overweight, balding men.
In severe cases the disease causes involuntary bragging about romantic conquests with the sufferer completely unaware that anyone flashing a similar amount of baht can purchase the same experience.
If left untreated the disease will progress to the point where the victim becomes so deluded that he may date and/or marry any young lady willing to satiate his ego with a constant chorus of “you hansum man.”
Interestingly, the disease brings about its own cure. As the victim’s wallet is lightened by said girlfriend or wife, pressure on the coccygeal segment of the spine is reduced which, in chain event like fashion, brings temporary relief to the pressure being applied to the frontal lobe.
Once the victim’s reasoning faculties are restored and his bank accounts drained the body is able to fill the void caused by the rapid deflation of the ego with racism, bigotry, and chauvinism.

It's just as dangerous in a car, tuk tuk or on a bike.  I walk a lot, usually Suan Dok to KSK, sometimes to Thapae Gate and back, often on Suthep Road or Huay Kaew - both extremely hazardous for ALL.

One must be constantly aware of what's going on all around, whether on 2 legs or 4 wheels.

How about companies that offer foreigners an indefinite semi-legal stay in Thailand through education visas, as long as people sign up to Thai language / culture classes?  Though it's perhaps just the Thai government getting conned as the 'students' are willful participants. Many such plays out there.

The lady doctor, who has a practice in McCormick has a good reputation, but she gets very busy and it's a bit like a conveyor belt. There is also a Chinese man who is recommended...his clinic is in Wororot somewhere...perhaps someone else will be able to give yo directions. There is the British Tinnitus Association online, which might provide some tips.
Has Meniere's disease been ruled out?

The Chinese Acupuncturist in the Wororot market area is "world-famous in Chiang Mai" the old Chinese pharmacy in Chang Moi Road (left hand side) can send you in the right direction  and has his contact details.

This is Dr Wang and you will find him at the Chinese pharmacy every day between 0900-1300

Well,... there you go LOL
I did not know he worked from that pharmacy directly.... I only knew that if you needed him you had to go there.
Thanks for the extra info!

Can't blame a dog for hanging around......with meat portions that huge, there's sure to be plenty left over!

yourself of course, will be sticking to a 35 baht Pad Thai, so quite why you are engaging in a thread about Sunday Lunches, when on your own admission you are precluded from eating them, one can only wonder!

The whole city is suffering from smoke inhalation and they haven't even attempted to enforce any burning restrictions

I doubt very much they will enforce red light offenders
