Notary Services And Certified Copies

2012-04-09 13:21:56

Not sure if this is the right place to post this, but there have been posts about finding notaries and this is a closely related subject.

Over the last couple of years I have had requests from time to time from various institutions in the UK to provide "certified copies" of documents. If you are resident in the UK this is easy. You just visit your solicitor or bank, they make a copy of the relevant document, stamp and sign it and make a nominal charge.

Here in the Land of Smiles it is quite different. The "certified copy" has to be certified by someone in a position of responsibility i.e.bank manager, accountant, police officer, etc. Without exception Thais in such positions refuse to get involved in something they do not understand. They think they are being asked to verify the document (e.g. the passport being copied is not a forgery) instead of merely stating that the copy itself has not been tampered with in any way.

The British Embassy will certify copies but their charges are, in my view, excessive at THB1500 per document. Also, they will only certify copies of UK issued documents. They will not touch anything in Thai. Last year I had to get a death certificate certified and it was so difficult I ending up sending the original which was something I really didn't want to do.

Can anyone recommend a legal firm that can provide this service at a reasonable price? Ideally located in the Ploenchit/ Sukhumvit/Asoke area.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

British Passport Based Only On His Mother'S British Passport

2012-02-28 21:33:03

Thai lady has a British passport, is pregnant and presently in the UK. She wants to return to Thailand and have the baby here. If she does so, can she get a British passport for her child?

Husband / father is out of the picture. Application would be by the mother alone.

From what research I've done I think she is OK on this, but I'd be really grateful for advice from anyone with a better handle on these matters than I have.

Where Is The Morchit Office?

2011-07-06 14:08:14

I have a five year Thai drivers licence and I need to go to the Morchit Land Transport Department office to get a international licence.

Can someone tell me exactly where the Morchit office is? I have seen it refered to many times on this forum but I can't find directions or an exact address.

Also, I am not sure if I need to take confirmation of my address. Does anyone know what the requirement is on this?

Is There A Local Election On 26Th June?

2011-06-21 12:00:31

I was told last week that there is a local election in Bangkok on Sunday 26th June. Therefore no alcohol is sold from 6pm on Saturday 25th June until 6pm on Sunday 26th June. Accordingly, most of the bars will be closed on Saturday night.

Can anyone confirm or (preferably) refute this?

I know there is an national election on Sunday 3rd July and no alcohol / no bars will apply on Saturday 2nd July. The question is do we have two "dry" Saturdays on the trot?

Abbreviations For Days Of The Week In Thai

2011-06-07 09:17:52

Like everyone I get appointment reminders from the doctor, garage, whatever that use abbreviations for the days of the week and the months of the year. I've worked out the months of the year but I've drawn a blank on the days of the week.

Can someone please help me out on this?
