That is very condescending.
So when a foreigner speaks Thai fairly well (quite rare) and Thais say Good Thai speaking for a foreigner, is that also condescending?

Well, given his appearance and the name Hall, the defenders of supposed British purity can't very well claim he's not a pukka sahib Brit who doesn't look British (whatever that means in the 21st century) or that his name doesn't really sound British.
from another thread involving a Brit arrested by Thai police:

worried about fire escapes in thailand? for god's sake, the OP (or his cousin) needs to get a grip. 400 thb won't buy you safety. you get through the night and live to see another day. youre in thailand!
and its "razzmatazz"...
Didn’t the Op already get a grip when he decided not to stay in the guest house and stayed in a hotel which was 3 times more expensive?
I think there are a few too many sanctimonious keyboard warriors attacking the Op for nothing more than having an innocent rant while at the same time providing a reminder for many of us and a warning for many newbies. You can stay in a "luxury resort" and still get done in by the stupid! Like the 91 who died in the Royal Jomtien Resort fire in 1997.
It was discovered that hotel staff had locked emergency exits to prevent people from leaving without paying. They found bodies piled-up near the locked emergency doors.

Not everybody is as bright and as logical as you.
These were only my observations and maybe useful for tourists or those first visiting Chiang Mai, who would not realise that are are placing themselves at great risk staying in a cheap guesthouse.
The warning is here and you can stick it anywhere you like, if you believe it`s just a gripe and worthless.

Look for the real message here and perhaps you`ll curb your blatant rudeness in referring to my comments as "anally retentive". Here's a guy who decides he's qualified to teach English but can't use the language worth a dam_n. I have friends who are good, hard-working and qualified English teachers but get painted with the same brush as the OP. It's frustrating that so many people who are horrible with their English ability get hired to teach, but the real teachers are branded as jerks.
"teach them a little bit of English" is hardly teaching English, not in the context that the OP describes, especially that the OP mentions being with them only one night! So no, the OP doesn't claim to be a qualified English teacher and isn't looking for a job as such. Looking a little closer at his use of English crosses that divide between poor English of a native speaker and the English learnt by someone as a second language.

Researchers astounded that they hadn't noticed before.
They don't read "The emporer has no clothes" in school do they? And they wonder why Thailand has an international reputation for certain things in the world? Maybe it is because they are true? The ability to be so ridiculously thin skinned in this country astounds me sometimes.

What is worse for Thailand's image is ... all the stuff that happens in Thailand like the sizzling illegal goods trade that has been going on long enough (say the past 2 decades) that it is world renowned. Thank goodness she didn't mention anything about the sex trade or this little country would have been up in arms. They are so overly sensitive here about image. Here's a tip: if you are worried about your image, then CLEAN IT UP.
These comments would tend to come from two kinds of Thai people.
1) the moneyed, English-speaking, partially foreign educated Thais who MUST refuse to believe that Thailand is still in the dark ages so that they can justify their position in what they want to believe is a modern, fair, competitive and open society. They certainly do live in a Thailand completely different form most of the other population.
2) the terribly educated but deeply nationalistic Somchai who probably can't tell you one important recent event about any country outside of Thailand that doesn't involve consumerism. This Somchai is very deeply proud of most anything Thai and seems to find it very difficult to find anything in the Kingdom to criticize.

Actually, no, you are not, and, if you actually knew what most of the world thinks of you, you might REALLY be upset.

True but it does make sense to open up that end of the country to future links with China. Personally I don't know why anyone would take a train, high speed or not, rather than fly. Flights are not expensive and they're a lot faster.
You're obviously not a fan of Paul Theroux - many people prefer trains..... and buses. They often go to the centre of the city, save a lot of money (eg I go from Chiang Mai to Bangkok for B350, comfortably - try doing that on a plane) and lots of time and hassle getting from the airport to where you want to go
