Good to get the electrical wires under ground in time for this years flooding ... should go a long way in helping with the population density problem.   Posted Image

#5158264 Capital Punishment: Chalerm Pushes For 15 Day Execution Of Drug Convicts

15 days? This is just pure insanity.

Can we hold him responsible, personally, if there is ever someone executed that should not have been?

Then he has ordered their murder, plain and simple.

In fairness, it's fifteen days after the Court of Appeal has upheld the death sentence, NOT fifteen days after initial sentencing.

As an anti-death penalty advocate, it's still appalling, but it's important to understand what he is proposing before debating it meaningfully.

PM pledges to eradicate 80% of drugs within one year

Posted Image

BANGKOK, Sept 11 - Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra on Sunday launched an anti-narcotics operation as a national agenda with the aim to eradicate 80 per cent of drug use and drug trafficking within one year.

Chalerm wants drug runners executed faster. (How slow is lethal injection ?)

Chalerm pushes for early execution of drug convicts (How early? 6 a.m.?)

He wants the "runners" aka "mules" executed, but what about the really "Big Fish" ? Maybe too close for comfort?

It seems Brother Number 2 is keen to eradicate as many of these people before P.M. Yingluck's deadline of 80% this time next year.

Cambodia abolished the death penalty, even Burma has a moratorium in effect).

Police Killers, meanwhile, walk free (at least one did)

I like his logic. Like many Asains he is only speaking the obvious. Prisons are nothing but places for criminals to organize and prepare for crime once they are free. Good idea to eradicate the problem. Why feed them and give them a place to stay until they can return to society and do criminal acts again. The criminals donot really care anyways they will return in another life. So it is a win-win situation. Great  asian logic me thinks.

Asian logic? I think that's offensive to Asians. Most Asians would say they use logic and what you're saying is definitely not logical. It's draconian.

#5158053 Eerie Silence Cloaks The Phuket Death Of A Swedish Tourist

Posted RichardinBKK on 2012-03-23 10:55:20

The picture is inappropriate because it suggests a conspiracy in foul play.  Here may be some reasons for a lack of further news instead of an "Eerie Silence" (Talk about Drama! )

(1) Results from the autopsy are not yet complete

(2) Evidence on the scene, if made public, would destroy the chances of finding individuals who might be involved.

(3) The authorities are respecting the wishes of the family that details are kept "in house" and  ... please read this slowly so you understand it ... Not the business of anyone else.

(4) I hope the person who posted this realizes that in most of the world, police do not feel required to share every detail of every incident they investigate.  Perhaps there is "no news' because ... There - is - no -news.

So, suggesting foul play, a cover up and conspiracy is a dramatic at this early stage.

I am bracing myself for the endless lectures about how I have only lived here a few years and will someday learn that everything that happens in the Kingdom is part of a larger conspiracy plot hatched by Jet Ski operators.  It is getting a bit stale, really.

#5105564 Fire On 7th Floor Of FICO Building, Asoke Area: Bangkok

Posted Roj on 2012-03-03 17:56:14

You have the same problems fighting fires in any congested city in the world. At least they managed to deploy the hydraulic platform. When I was a London fireman in the 70s/80s we couldn`t even extend an ordinary ladder in some areas let alone an HP or TL because of the narrowness of the streets or because of parked cars. The full time Bangkok firemen are well trained and I know they are proud to be doing the job. Good for us if we should ever need their services.

Can't believe that afire in an office block has enabled the usual suspects to come out and bash Thailand. Pretty sure we still have fires back in the UK. My impression of firefighters in Bangkok is that they do a very good job. I'll agree that some of the wiring and power cables aren't exactly great here - but there are a lot of things back home that aren't great. Anyone read about the bloke that drowned in 3 foot of water, as the police and fire brigade looked on, because Health abd Safety rules wouldn't allow then to walk in to the pond to get the person out as they had not done a submersible certificate.

Isn't it amazing that so many comments already criticise Thai standards.

If you don't like it, here's an idea: go home.

Have some sense and compassion.

Many of us are sick of seeing people needlessly maimed or killed because of a pathetic attitude to safety and maintenance. For example - you know how much safety gear those firefighters have got? You know what happens to them if they are injured and can no longer work?

Compassion is trying to improve standards. If you prefer to turn a blind eye to stupidity, maybe it is you that should get on your bike and go home. Putting up with it doesnt do Thailand any favours.

I have a new game.  I read each news thread and wait to see how many posts it takes before the usual 'everything is shit in Thaiand' post occurs.  The number is getting lower and lower.

It's getting very tedious
Johnnie, I completely agree with this assessment.  I have had my happiest days in the Kingdom, and am grateful for each day I live here.  Why do people stay in a place they do not like.  Isn't the definition of insanity to repeat a behavior and expect a different outcome?

OMG.  Mystery solved!

Glad to see the firefighters have the equipment for highrises.
i think they have the absolutely right equipment - but the city infrastructure with all these stupid powerpoles and cables going in all directions does not allow firfighters to do a proper rescue job!

Never thought of it before just amazed at all the cables but now this has happened it highlights the problem. I don't suppose it will change though.
Hope everyone is OK.

Your havering......I love it when the English think they know their history. Posted Image

Really, care to point out exactly what is the "havering" part ?

You led with the bold statement......so you tell me when the English conducted said mass breeding programme with our Bonnie Lassies? Posted Image

I already did, guess you've never heard of the Kingdom of Northumbria.

Yes I have, that will be the same Northumbria that did not join as part of England until 1237. So prior to that date the notion of being English is wrong.

In fact I believe the original copy of the Magna Carta ( 1215 ) ceded Northumbria to Scotland, however the Pope overturned it.

Now we are getting pedantic. I am not anti-English, far from it. The Magna Carta was the greatest document ever produced and it was solely an English achievement.

Going back on topic about the English language, I believe the official language at time of the Magna Carta was Norman French, the Normans were Norse Scandanavian by descent, they invaded a land which had a melting pot of Gaels, Angles, Saxons and various other ethnic mixes. At the time of the invasion the Western Isles of Scotland were under Norwegian control. The language of the Church at the time was Latin,

My point is, English is a mongrel language, but it is a truly beautiful mongrel language. It has taken influences from everywhere and adapted these influences for itself.

This ability to adapt and absorb is the English languages' greatest strength. We native speakers should be immensely proud of it, it is undoubtedly the most egalitarian language in the world, and possibly the most egalitarian instrument in human history.

#5097075 English As Your Mother Tongue?

Posted Sing_Sling on 2012-02-29 14:03:29

On another thread - the one about TV members' partners' origins - one poster, mca, took umbrage with another poster's opinion and ridiculed his grasp of English.
Now, I agreed with mca's sentiment regarding the other guy's opinion, but was it really necessary to mock the man's English, whose mother tongue was ever so clearly something else?

This is a bit of a bugbear of mine - the seeming arrogance of some of those whose mother tongue is English towards those whose grasp of the language isn't as good as theirs.

I think, instead of ridiculing their language capabilities we should actually be grateful that they are contributing in a language that is foreign to them, on a forum that is mainly occupied by those whose mother tongue is English - - - - well, we shall see if it is.   I do wonder how many TV members, whose mother tongue is English, are capable of writing and conversing fluently in a second or third language.

(Next poll will be a demographic of which parts of the world we all hail from)

I dunno, these all look like parodies.
How about Basil (don't mention the war) Fawlty?
Mel Brooks?
Or Team America and Kim Il Jong?

The best way to depower something is to laugh at it. These shirts would be an anathema to a hardcore neo nazi.
It's been 70 years, how long do we want to carry this cross?

I say get a grip.
