Jedi, Our GR, Is Gone

2012-05-12 12:46:00

Jedi, our Golden Retriever, became suddenly extremely ill a week ago.  I noticed in the morning that he could hardly stand up and no strength.  When I came back from work that afternoon he had gotten much worse.  Severe breathing distress and non-responsive.  We rushed him to the vets who gave him oxygen and an saline IV drip.  After they did xrays and a full blood panel, the panel came back with extremely low white & red cell count.  His liver tests couldn't be measured as they were off the scale.  The vets said he had zero chance of surviving the night.

We brought him back and laid him down on a carpet and towels with the IV drip hanging up.  We watched him all night and that morning I heard a cheer from my wife and he was awake and looking around.  My wife slept on the couch every night watching over him for the next several days.  He started improving, eating and drinking well and was able to stand up but very weakly.  Took him to the vets every day and they were very surprised he survived as they've never had a dog survive with the blood count like his.

Last night, as he was lying in our living room, his breathing became labored again.  He fell asleep several hours earlier but then difficulty breathing and non-responsive.  At around 2:40 AM I went to bed while my wife watched over him.  A couple of minutes later my wife called my downstairs.  As I started down the stairs my wife was crying and I saw him move his leg, when I approached him he was gone.  He was 10 years old.

He is and will be terribly missed.   To our friend, our companion our light - RIP Jedi.  Some photos of his time with us starting in 2004 to a week ago.

Printed Circuit Board Production

2012-05-07 15:24:27

This is for the techies out there who like to build their own electronics.  I do a lot of electronic design for work and all involve producing a printed circuit board.  We have an in-house PCB facility so 99% of the boards are made there.  For a long time only single sided boards could be done so I trained my technicians on how to do a double sided board (non-plated through, no silk screen or solder masks - just basic).  This saves me an enormous amount of time when I design a PCB.  My time is a lot more expensive than the technicians. However, there are times when I need a professionally done board either due to very high density or needing multiples of the same board or due to some of my designs are requested by other, outside facilities.  Normally have been using a place in Bangkok but their prices and turn around time was getting too much.  A company I have been doing business purchasing electronic components from for many years also has PCB production and an online quoting system.  So, I sent my PCB layout file to them and they did a perfect job at half the price of the previous company.  Here is the board(s), I had two made with 8 circuits on each for 16 circuits.  I ordered it with all options - double sided PCB, plating through, silk screening and solder mask.  If you only need a basic single sided board it can be pretty cheap. Futurlec PCB.  I have no affiliation with them other than being a very satisfied customer.

Looking For House To Rent

2012-05-07 11:33:24

Before I get jumped on with 'Use Search', I have and substantially too with many, many hours.  Thaivisa Classifieds, over a dozen real estate websites, hundreds of house views at those sites and my wife going around to a few moo bahns.

We've lived in our current house for 15 years but now the owner wishes to move in.  It is a two story, 4 bed, 2 baths large yard area, fully furnished and quiet and we pay 7,000/m for all that period.  It's clear now we will not find anything like this in that price range.  I'm looking specifically for a place along the canal road or close due to work and can go up to 15,000/m.  Minimums - 3 bedrooms two story, moderately large yard due to our Golden Retriever, partially (we have frigs, tvs, sofas + already) or fully furnished, secure gated community and relatively quiet (I know, that one can be difficult).  So many houses that are listed, when we go to look not available.  Been trying to find something at Koolpunt 7 or  Moo Bahn Wang Tan with no luck.  Tried Siwalee near BigC Hang Dong, but only one place at 25k.

Any suggestions/specifics would be appreciated.

Another Technology In Thailand Topic

2012-05-05 15:51:56

Some technology at Chiang Mai University.  The videos are in HD if you go to YouTube to watch.

The first clip is showing how to make a DVD writer high power laser.  This was just a 'fun, personal' project at the lab.  Dangers of watching too many YouTube videos and getting 'ideas'. Posted Image

The 2nd one is of a high power induction heater I designed for a student's research project.  Melting and stretching glass tubing into a capillary tube with an inside hole diameter of around 100 microns, less or equal to the diameter of a human hair.  Actually made one even smaller than that.

I have more hair but an accurate representation of myself. Posted Image

Baby Squirrel

2012-05-04 21:12:29

Before anyone jumps on me with the 'should leave it to nature bit', the parent(s) apparently were killed by birds and the nest destroyed so limited options when it comes to helping the little guy out.  The guy feeding her is experienced and knows how to care for it.  He said you can't just put it into another squirrel family nest as it would be unaccepted.  She was really lapping the milk up.  Pretty noisy guy also with a high pitched squeak.  Anyway, enjoy a rather unusual photo/video.
