Mounting A Consumer Unit
2012-02-26 19:40:35
The circuit cables will leave the consumer unit via trunking on the wall. Is it best practice for the cables to exit the consumer unit by the gap in the back plate or through the side walls? If the back then is there any preference to mounting the unit on a pvc or wooden frame type box to allow easy transition to the trunking ? Thanks.
What'S This Little Small Grey Box For Outside My House ?
2012-02-20 21:34:26
Can you tell me what this box is/was for ? My guess is it's for an old land-line telephone, so no power supply, but would just like to check before I pull it out. I've noted on the picture what the wires are connected to. The black 'incoming' wires seem to be wrapped around the main electric supply cables coming into the house. Thanks.
Light Circuit On 1Mm Cable
2012-02-15 12:00:14
Reading around, the use of 1mm cable seems to be frowned upon and 1.5mm is recommended. I've pulled out the old light circuits and I've got loads of sheathed 1mm that I'm tempted to reuse...
For my new light circuits, 1 is downstairs with 14 lights and 1 upstairs with 10 lights. The loops would run no more than 15 metres.
I know mixing cable isn't also recommended... but if I use 1mm for the switch drops and 1.5mm in the loop, can I go with a 10A MCB for each circuit ?
Thanks again.

What Size Rcd To Use ?
2012-02-14 08:25:17
I know I need a 30mA RCD - but for the "in" Amp do I need 63A or 40A ? It will be in a split-load consumer unit. The protected side has 6 MCB's from 6A to 32A (cable is 1.5mm to 6mm). Main switch (for the whole CU) is 63A.
Thanks for any help.

Help Me Understand Wiring A Split-Load Cu
2012-02-09 18:12:04
Diagram from the bticino manual attached.
Am I understanding this correctly ?
It looks like the L for the RCD protected side comes from the MCB in slot 10, which is getting its L feed from the built-in busbar. Then the MCBs on the protected side are getting their L feed from the RCD via an add-in tooth like busbar which connects at the bottom of the RCDs in 13-16. It means the L feed to the circuits comes out the top of the MCB's 13-16.
If this is correct then I have a few questions :
- how is the L running through the built in busbar stopped from entering the MCB's 10-16 ?
- it looks like I need 2 types of MCB's for the protected and non-protected sides ?
- should the MCB in slot 10 be the same A as the RCD ?
- is slot 9 usable or is that were some-kind of disconnect of the L is hapenning across the built-in busbar ?
Thanks for any help.
