#5336888 Pg Poll: Thai English Skills

This poll like many others, is no more than an excuse for Thai bashing and an opportunity to feel warm and fuzzy by reminding yourself how much better you are than the people of a developing country. Posted Image

Just so you know, English people are infamous for being the most arrogant 'I'm not going to learn anybody else's language, they can learn mine' kind of people on the planet.

Anybody who voted in the poll but can't speak another language themselves, should have their highly hypocritical vote struck from the record. '

I can't speak anybody else's language, but when I go to a different country they dam_n well better be able to speak mine'. Posted Image

Give it a rest. Your constant trolling for debate is tiresome.
Go travel to any neighbouring country and you will see how far behind the Thai people/resort staff are compared to even the poorest 3rd world countries in the region.
Thailand will keep falling behind but will keep attracting the low end market tourism and will suffer at the high end as the standards of service not being up to scratch. ie speaking english.
I guess the thais won't give a crap because the Russian invasion majority don't speak english either.

trucks over-sized tires and elevated chassis probably made it unstable and the driver lost control in the rain. The tires also appeared to be worn out.

#5320061 Is Thailand Really Cheaper For You ?

Posted impulse on 2012-05-21 19:48:44

When I lived in Corpus Christi, Texas, going saltwater fishing was cheap and snow skiing was expensive- so I fished a lot and skied behind a boat.

When I lived in Casper, Wyoming, snow skiing was cheap and saltwater fishing was expensive so I skied a lot and fished the lakes and streams

When I lived in China, taxis and mass transit were cheap and owning a car was expensive, so I took taxis.  In Bangkok, I don't need a car because I can find everything I need fairly close to home.  That's not the case in suburbia in Casper or Corpus.

I find some things in Bangkok to be very cheap and others to be very expensive and that figures into what I do and how I live here.  Overall, it is possible to live on much less money in Bangkok than in the USA.

But if I choose to live the same lifestyle as "back home", it will cost a lot more because of the high cost of goods that aren't indigenous and are taxed and marked up as luxury goods- though they would certainly not be considered luxury goods in most western countries.

Overall, I spend about as much to live in Thailand as I would in the USA or China, but live a very different lifestyle.  Not better, not worse, just different. (And every once in awhile I suck it up and spend a big wad on something I miss from "back home")

#5329734 Lady Gaga Fans Gush, Critics Blast Fake-Watch Tweet: Bangkok

Perhaps I'm mistaken but I suspect her publicity machine has generated this somewhat ironic comment with a deeper and clever message regarding the abundance of pirated goods (also pirated copies of her music) - A clever and publicity drawing attack on the authorities for permitting counterfeit and copy rights infringement to exist to such a degree.

If some people are getting offended by this then they really need to learn to accept criticism and the realities of Thailand's tolerance of illegal activity.

#5327327 Odourless Durians To Hit The Market

I've never tried Durian or really examined one too much because of how many people (locals) I know who have got sick from eating bad ones. I wonder if not having a natural odor will help identify ones that have gone bad.

Regardless, I'd be more in favor of seeing more availability of seedless fruits.
Lovely odour, pungent, eating them for 31 years --and NEVER ever heard of locals being sick through eating them, but living amongst the people locally, I have a good Idea on reality.  The problem with the fruit is that very few locals eat them, 3 pieces in a pack sell in the shops for 150 bht, half a days wage, out of reach of LOCALS,  In one soft piece there is one stone and is no problem, pips tend to get inbetween your teeth, these really are NOT pips. Be adventurous try one you will not be sick. do google give stats on sick durian eaters, sorry--had to put that in but do not mean to be nasty, only a joke. smile.

Phuket is vastly overated.

Just up the road, past Khao Lak, is the hedonistic town of Takuapa. Man, the fleshpots and girls in that place are something to behold - you should really move there.

#5271868 Thai Parliament Quarrel Escalates In Hitler Salute

Posted anterian on 2012-05-04 02:43:04

Whether it was a Nazi salute or a Roman salute, whether it was sarcasm or not is really irrelevant. What is relevant is that this sort of behaviour is not the way a member of parliament should behave. Yes, I have witnessed similar behaviour in the British parliament, the Spanish parliament, and others, but this does not make it acceptable behaviour.

#4944358 Speaking English Campaign Is Just A Passing Fad: Thai Opinion

Posted cm das on 2011-12-30 18:07:06

Forget the teachers for the time being. The level of English proficiency in Thailand could be raised across the country with one simple step: stop dubbing English language movies and TV shows into Thai. Leave the original soundtrack and provide Thai subtitles.

#5246506 Thai Analysis: Heading Towards Lawless Society?

Posted swillowbee on 2012-04-24 17:54:53

... the cultural values of a society are largely driven and sustained by the spiritual values of the predominant religion(s).

... after 12+ years living and working here, up close and personal, my opinion is the Thai's greed is greater and stronger than the Thai's Buddha.

... Thais are not particularly prepared for self-introspection, especially on an issue as sensitive as the defacto state religion - the unique, Thai-branded Theravada Buddhism ... so, the question of Thais' inferior cultural values might be denied by Thais, and the entire issue uncomfortably avoided in their child-like ways.

... no great moral leader appears on the Thai radar anywhere to inspire and stir in Thais a greater humanity ... no Mahatma Gandhi ... no Aung San Suu Kyi ... no Nelson Mandela ... for that reason, I suspect changes in Thai values will not occur, and Thai cultural values will continue to corrode.

... I have long been preparing my Thai children to leave Thailand, should they decide their quality of life will be better in another nation.

... corruption + incompetence = Thailand ... it is a mathematical certainty.

... so deeply saddening to have to witness this ... I wonder what the Thais' Buddha would say?

#5234002 'I Was Tagged, So I Was Just Browsing': Thai Democrat Party MP Nutt

Posted mca on 2012-04-20 06:58:26

BANGKOK: -- Democrat Party MP Nutt Bantadtan, a son of former party leader Banyat, admits at a press conference yesterday that he accidentally viewed a pornographic pic during a parliamentary debate on Wednesday.

When I was younger I used to "accidentally" view pornographic pictures for about 2 hours on a daily basis.
