Ok... wanting to run OS 9 I guess is a reason to get an old system - still personally I think probably not worth the trouble... isn't there a replacement for PageMaker?

I am in Chiang Mai and would need to get the PowerBook from Pai. 667MHz and 512MB RAM. Woo-hoo :) I don't know - I think it's too slow for doing serious stuff though considering when PageMaker came out that might still run OK. 60GB HD which I put in at some point.

Condition: Function 10/10; Looks 1/10. It's all working but the color coming off the bezel looks horrible, and it's coming off all the painted parts. No DVD burner, only CD and DVD reading, makes lots of noise but works.

I'd actually recommend getting a newer model if you want to work on it every day. A desktop, preferably, as those are more sturdy and last longer. The G5 towers last forever, for example, iMacs were holding up pretty well too.

Oh in my personal experience, stay away from the 1.67GHz PPC PowerBooks. I sold one of these to a friend and he ended up having lots of trouble with it. 1.67GHz is more than the G4 spec allows, and they hacked the bus speed too, so it's extremely finicky with the RAM, and things tend to break. If you get a PowerBook make sure it's 1.5Ghz or slower.

Hmm... come to think of it, I might have a 12" iBook G4 1.33 GHz PERFECT condition for sale soon when I get the lady a new one. She's hardly ever used it - something like 1x per month to change the music on the iPod. Interested in that? It might work well if hooked up to an external monitor as 12" is clearly too small for PageMaker. Wasn't planning on selling it now but if you want it, I could put the money towards upgrading her to an Air.

Thanks for the follow-up and bug experiences with the other models but being in up Chiang Mai  is a deal-killer for me, looks like I'll maybe find one on e-bay delivered to a friend then have friend ship it to me...actually I'm much better with PhotoShop than I am with PageMaker but Adobe rolled all of their best software in to a mutimedia monster suite of software a few years back and I wasn't willing to upgrade all over again including the machine so I'm happy with what I know works for me...

Thanks again, take care...MTM

I have one

How much you give me?

It's a Titanium G4 with 667MHZ (top of the range!)

:)

It's all working. The machine is in Pai. The reason I haven't sold it is that it's hardly worth selling if you can't get any money for it. Up until recently I also used it for visitors so they can check their email etc.

It looks horrible, as all the paint around the (painted) border has come off. "road warrior" looks.

Anyway make an offer and if it's worth the hassle its yours.

May I ask why you want to "boot off your favorite HD"? You can get all the data off that HD many other, perhaps, better ways. Migration assistant if you buy any new mac will restore your entire system from that HD - your data, desktop, settings, all are preserved.

You can also hook it up and just copy stuff you want.

I cannot make you a good faith offer without seeing if it will fit my need...

I have all my fa favorite apps from OSX 10.3.9 that is the last version that supports OS9.2.2 and Adobe PageMaker 7. I have to apply for my retirement visa Tuesday or Wednesday and once its approved I'll have a much more free time..what part of town are you in?

I can find many MacBook/Pros  n e-bay in the $250-$400 (7500-12,000 Bath) range withe higher priced ones having 1-1.6GHz and 30-day guarantees to work but no one will ship to Thailand that I can find so far

The amount of RAM and size of harddrive make a difference to in what I can offer. What OS version are you running on it? I've already had the old tower's hardive in a USB casing looked at Tukom Apple store and all S/W is showing but I haven't been able to boot it so if we get a chance to get together I'll bring it and see if it boots the laptop? Eh?

LMK, thanks for the reply...

In Topic: Best Cheapest Way To Extend Retirement Visa

Good answer Pib... The OP should be paying YOU for the time it took you to draft the guidance for him... as he seems to have money to spread around...

the combo method is used, no seasoning (deposit ahead of your application time) is required.

I just found out not one hour ago this "no seasoning (deposit ahead of your application time)" simply IS NOT ENTIRELY TRUE, not for everybody anyway...so don't count on it 100% or you will be sorely disappointed.

I have a 90-day one-entry tourist visa and *ALL* paperwork nicely in order (as laid out in THEIR  OWN INFO SHEET) and easy to follow anticipating the 60-day seasoning rule for first time applicants rule. I was NOT offered to upgrade my visa even tho paperwork they handed me said I may need to.

I was pleasant even jokingly asking agent after he see I have more than Bt800,000 asking if "he give me good exchange rate?" already knowing I was well over 800,000, I was clean shaven and cleanly dressed. I was told to come back Dec 1 since my visa expires on Xmas (by a supervisor also), even if I came back on  Dec 1 my bank account wouldn't be seaoned until   Dec 5 so I guess it's just Immi Thai f**king with farang? ...maybe they just didn't like my young-ish nice looking not-gray face and head? I didn't know but  ...

Since their requirement sheet handed to me at the front door telling me what I needed for retirement extension didn't include any verbiage about "seasoning" under the "OR©" clause of requirements I had no arguments since ThaiVisa is no any REAL authority and only a base for POSSIBLE useful information therefore all I could do was save face thank nice (in Thai) and leave.

I will go back Dec 7 because by the I will have 60 days "seasoned" Thai bank money which was my original plan...

Moral of the story don't believe everything you read and have a plan B at all times (plan C & D while in in Thailand  wouldn't hurt either)...

Last trip a year and half ago I considered getting a Thai account but was still unsure on retirement or timeframe which in a way almost cost me dearly but then again the length of time of inactivity a Thai account probably would have been closed anyway costing me whatever was in it...

Excuse me for asking but, Is this something you know is fact or just something you thought?
The reason I ask is I leave my accounts in Thailand unused for over a year at times & never had any problems.

So I wondered if it was some new regulation you know of.

Thank You for any info

Sorry for mentioning something more rumour than fact. I know of no exact timeframes or baht amounts that would cost people account closures or loss of funds in that account if account went inactive for any reasonto which I see someone has alredy set my comment straight and thanks to ianguygil for the clarity on that too.

...and thanks to lopburi3 ACH input, I'll go see about that link next, may as well reply-all while I can...

I'm having a horrble time reading (waiting for pages to fully load) and/or replying to the forum apprently after TV board upgrade(s) within the last year (and search function works great now btw) my older computer/browswer having a hel_l of a time freezing-up, bogging down or not fully loading while browsing in here so when I get to LOS we'll see about [laptop] upgade for me ;)

MTM, the BBK Bank New York route is one of the better options for moving larger amounts of funds from the U.S. to Thailand. You should open a BKK Bank account, if you intend to continue moving funds.....unless you want to end up wasting a lot of money.

Also, it's no problem to set up that arrangement once you're already in Thailand. Once in LOS, just open your BKK Bank account, and then use that account number and the BKK Bank NY ABA number to create a link in your Wells Fargo online banking module.

However, if you really can't or won't do that for some reason, there is another option:

--keep your funds in a U.S. account, and use your U.S. bank debit card to withdraw them from ATMs in Thailand. But you really have to be careful about that to not get reamed. 1. You need a U.S. bank account that doesn't charge foreign currency fees like Capital One or Charles Schwab, among others. And 2. You'd be better off using only AEON ATMs in Thailand if they're accessible to you, because they don't charge Thai banks' 150 baht foreign card ATM withdrawal fee. Also, ATM machines typically will only dispense 25,000 baht or so per withdrawal, and most U.S. accounts have daily withdrawal limits as well.

Another reason to open is BKK Bank account is, they do have established procedures that would allow you (and others) to have both U.S. Social Security and other pension type monthly payments direct deposited into your BKK Bank account. The advice you're apparently getting from others about that not being possible was wrong.

If you've got a recurring monthly payment to transfer, I'm pretty sure BKK Bank would be more than happy to open and maintain a Thai bank account for you. The do have some requirements for foreigners wanting to open accounts, and I believe there's a link to their bank web page explaining those requirements at the beginning of this thread.

Even for a relatively modest fee of $25 a month to do monthly wire transfers, you're going to be wasting a lot of money if you continue in that direction with traditional wire transfers. You really can do much better, if you learn a bit more about your banking options.

Thanks gotta run just replying to say I'll definately check into the same setup as your input and top of  thread
