#5341885 Thailand Is Not Like China In Its Attitudes Toward Foreigners (Yet?)

Is it possible ?
sure, anything is possible,
is it probable ?
This is difficult to predict, as there are so many variables.
but in the next 10 years I am willing to place the probability factor, closer to 1% than 15%
the 1% is so that the possibility remains open.
Having said all that, As western currencies decline in value, depleting the purchasing power of westerners, and the cost of living in Thailand increasing, I can see how the number of westerners living here might decrease on it's own.
Of course there is always the chance that  Thais might read some of the negative posts about them in some forums, how, many westerners talk about them, and the negative attitude  of some of us toward them. and I would not blame them if they chased us in the sea with pitchforks and knives.Posted Image

Ps: I wonder (let's say in the interest of discussion) How Americans,(or for that matter any westerner) would react, if they read in a forum (as we read posts about Thais in a regular basis) ,Muslims, living in their country, describing them as "lazy" "stupid" "thief's" "whores"and other words  that I cant bring my self to write.
Imagine how they will react toward them.
I think we better take stock of our selves, behave with more respect toward our hosts, or we could very well make the OP  question a reality.

Try reading the UK newspaper forums...  They are FULL of hatred against immigrants.  It used to be mainly the Moslems and Eastern Europeans, but a recent case (somewhere in the North of England) where a group of Asians 'groomed' and raped local young girls (from poor backgrounds) has led to one hell of a lot of Asian immigrant bashing - they believe all Asians are looking for young girls to sell off as prostitutes!

Edit - And, as far as I can see the UK is far less racist than many other European countries. i.e. BNP receive v little support.

Good post.

You ignore a source of anti-immigrant and anti-foreigner sentiment that is even closer to our hearts - TV itself.  We have threads today talking about the filthy habits of the natives, for example.  We regularly get diatribes from little Englanders moaning about immigrants invading their country, totally oblivious to the irony that they themselves are guests in this country.

Is this a Western thing, trying to account for war dead decades later? I'm not looking for a "West versus East" debate, just wondering how many other countries go to great lengths to locate and identify their war dead over 40 years later.

The caring countries, like to identify their dead. These soldiers faught for their Country and were Heroes,so why shouldn't the family and friends know what happened to them, its the decent thing to do!

#5177682 U.S. jobless claims reach lowest level since April 2008

Posted geriatrickid on 2012-03-30 18:30:42

The Ron Paul contingent have been  very quiet. Might be because the old loon has sort of been pushed aside. LOL.

If I could vote in a Republican primary I'd vote for santorum since his special link to  the heavens will guide the USA and create jobs so much better than the Obama administration. What's better than someone who will use the bible to guide US fiscal policy.
No offense to the other guy in the magical undergarments, but I don't think the Bain philosophy of  gutting companies works.
As for Newt, well he  gets his money from a Las vegas gambling baron. That's a sin so  I condemn him heartily.

The Democrats have a coherent fiscal policy, while the Republicans have a mish mash of regurgitated failed policies. As a fiscal conservative, i have more confidence in obama to deliver the economic results and tackle the debt crisis once the Democrats achieve their majority in November courtesy of the  wackos in the Republican party.

Yep, he's doing a cracker jack job.  Three years in and still nothing happening.

See my signature below and think before you vote.
What makes you think people voted for Obama to prove they weren't racists? They voted for Obama because he was tons better than McCain/Palin.

#5176699 Swedish Man Arrested For Pedophilia In Thailand

There is a proper nasty streak through all of these threads. The Thai police investigated his crimes and issued and international arrest warrant which was enacted in Prague. I say

Well done to the Royal Thai Police!!

I hope this case gets plenty of publicity as the word has to get out to Paedophiles worldwide, your time abusing Thai kids is up.

You're quite right theblether.  There is a disgusting element on TV that can't avoid being snide about such things.   If the police don't catch them, they're inept.  If they catch them, they took too long to do so.  If they want to extradite them back to Thailand, they want the bribes.  If they don't want to extradite them, they''re letting the perverts get away without doing time in a Thai prison.

WTF do people want?

And why are so many Thaivisa members so miserable all the time?

Have to agree with theblether ... therapy maybe required!

Being an Aussie, we have to deal with these on a regular basis.

Firstly, what we call the gecko is your friend ... they love to chase down some of the nasties that are troublesome for you.  Plus the Gecko will run away from a human, no worries about an inquisitive child.
the smaller geckos I'm referring to.

But, first up, about the Ants ... they are simply searching for food, so it's a case of leaving nothing that they would be interested in available.   Plus they leave a scented trail (hence they all walk the same path) and you can disrupt that trail.

The very small Thai Ant can be a real nuisance and darn near impossible to 'ant proof' against.
For some reason they loved the towels in my bathroom!

For the larger creatures, insect screens, doors with a bottom seal helps plug the gap at the bottom.

But Thailand being a tropical country with open doors, open windows and visiting relatives/neighbours/friends not used to closing doors extra might be a difficult ask.

Plus, since you are renting, your choices to modify your home are limited.

If you do decide to go the way of poisons or insecticides (surface sprays/ant sand etc) just be careful that your little one can't ingest the poison.

When I was growing up I had an Ant Jean........she had a moustache and I was terrified of her Posted Image

#5146416 Falang Go Home . . .

Posted submaniac on 2012-03-19 11:10:27

The entire belief that Thais generally want Falangs to go home is a myth and is not based on reality...it comes from disgruntled Falangs posting on Thaivisa.   If you think about the reality of the situation, the majority of the Thai population do not necessarily have alot of interaction with Falangs, and really don't have alot of sentiments that Falangs should go home...because they simply don't deal with Falang.  I know members of my family rarely have interaction with Falang.  Why would they either hate Falang or want Falang to go home when they don't really notice that you're here?

For the posters who claim that Thais have made a comment to you, there may be the possibility that a particular Thai may not like YOU in particular, not necessarily all  Falang.

P.S. Naboo, please don't take this as a dig at you.  Sometimes people don't like other people for whatever reason.  If she's saying go home to you by the shop, it may not be a thing against all Falang.

#5122900 I Love Being Called Farang

Posted theblether on 2012-03-10 15:08:11

I love being called farang, I take it as a compliment. It's a recognition of thousands of years of my heritage, but more importantly a recognition of the inate beauty of our pale skins in the eyes of Thais.

If you want proof of that watch Thai TV, every second commercial is for skin whitening cream. Thai ladies spend half their lives either buying it or applying it. If you have ever sat in the company of Thai ladies when one of our pale skinned beautiful girls walks past you will find them imitating meerkat behaviour. Silence descends ( except from me, I keep blethering, it-s what I do ) and the Thai ladies eyes follow said beauty down the street with a mix of admiration and jealousy.

There normally follows a mad rush to 7/11 to clear the shelves of skin whitening cream.

Even when I know I'm being double-priced I take it as a compliment,
To paraphrase Ali G, I say 'is that cos I is white'. I then make a point of showing off my milky skin and cause a minimum of embarrassment, a maximum of humour, and an overload of jealousy resulting once again in a raid on 7/11.

So instead of banging on about it negatively use some humour and piay up to it. Thais don't like confrontation and don't like losing face but they love a laugh and love a good sense of humour.

Just a spoonfull of sugar helps the medicine go down. So don't get your knickers in a twist, use your humour and don't forget, Thais are jealous of your skin colour.

I'm away for a blether, it's what I do.

#5121552 Newsweek Names Thai PM Yingluck One Of World's 150 Fearless Women

If she really is fearless, why haven't we ever seen her in an in-depth interview (not just a 5-minute one in which she can recite some key words) or debate?

Just very recently I watched Malaysia's Anwar Ibrahim participate in a long interview on Thai PBS which covered many topics, including controversies relating to the multiple charges of sodomy against him. He did a good job in answering the questions and explaining his points of view.
while I am not partoicularly a fan of Yingluck, we must realized she is very new to Politics while Anwar (whom I have respect for) is an old hand and was at one point even on course to be the next Prime Minister after serving lng years under Mahahtir. Surely this cannot be an apple to apple comparison?

I would suggest if one must judge, do it after the next flood season. Only then will there be  concrete measuremeent as to wherher she has learnt from the last experience. Put yrself in her shoes - do u seriously believe you would be able do much beeter?

Do you know Anwar when he was a young poltician? He was radical and even threaten to jump onto the railway track at an oncoming train to protest at that time the visit of the Israeli PM to Signapore? That was the affairs of another coutnry! Whether it was out of the anger at heat of the monent or a show, one will ever know (but it was election time :). But certainly he did mature over time (many years) to earn my respect/

I'm jumping in here without reading all the posts; has it been established what the Iranians were doing:

Were they assembling and selling explosive devices?

Were they buying explosive devices?

If it were a terrorist action, what or who was the target?

Was it in-house fighting between themselves?

Again, sorry if the above points have been clarified. IMHO though, it may be terrorist related to some extent at some stage, but what has happened wasn't planned; complete and utter <snip>

Surprised there hasn't been someone answering this, I'm still (more) confused as to what happened. Reason I asked earlier who or what the target was is that you don't usually do rehearsals with live material (Page 3 of the Terrorist's Handbook) and as far as I'm aware there were no known targets in the area of the second (and third (?)) detonation.

A lot of people on this thread have made their minds up already, but what are the facts; such a variation on the press releases that it doesn't make sense.

There is no need for fanciful conspiracy theories because the M.O. has been previously established. No one  wanted to believe  that the Russians would send a Bulgarian to London to assassinate a dissident by using a poison pellet fired from an umbrella. No one wanted to believe the Taliban were  prparing poison gas attacks until the videos of  Taliban testing the gas on dogs were publicized. No one wanted to believe that Al Qaeda beheaded   kidnap victims until the terrorists posted the videos and too credit. In this case, the Iranian agents were assembling  their bombs and   fortunately had a mishap. How can anyone deny that the  people named were implicated? How  does one explain away the explosive tossing iranian now legless, or the Iranian  arrested while attempting to flee to the safe haven of Malaysia?
