Yes! Get it transferred over if you plan to go anywhere else but Mae Sai.
A few months ago I tried to cross into Laos with both old and new passports, as others have advised, and they sent me back to the regional immigration office. Thankfully it was only a km from the border crossing - but had we arrived 15 later, the office would have been closed, I would have been stuck on the Thai side (for the weekend!), thus violating my Thai visa, needing to pay an overstay fee, all the while losing my hotel reservation in Vientiane.
So, yes, you could try to simply carry both passports. But depending on where and when you go, you could be in a world of hurt.

The trimmers at Robinson and Cebtral are marked up 300% compared to North American prices. But they do have a decent selection.
I'd suggest a Chinese import from a local market like wararot. Much cheaper and less risk. You may lost some skin in the process, but the risk:reward ratio is fair.

In Topic: Where To Buy Tires For My Old Honda City

It always preferable - if you're buying new - to buy from a large shop like Cockpit, etc. These larger places often have many tire sizes in stock, backup the tire warranty, and provide free or discounted rotations, balances, and alignments.
At Cockpit the rotate - bal - align service is about 200 baht. Without a membership or coupon book expect to pay 500 baht.
I get my tires from the Cockpit shop on Mae Rim Rs a few km north of the superhighway. They are nice. Fast. Speak English. Have free WiFi. And the only annoyance is that they stick a cockpit advert on my rear window every time I go there for service.
Highly recommended.

Great place! And sometimes Chai (from the old Chai Blues) swings by to play. Cheap drinks, not too much seating as it's on a tiny property, but a great casual place to stop by for some genuine blues. Le Spice is a decent Indian restaurant too!
