#4966009 [Everything] Thai Hating Farang

Posted MiG16 on 2012-01-09 11:31:28

I understand that on a forum we will always get topics repeated every now and again, and usually we do let them run (new info, perspectives, new contributors and all that)
However, I think the
thais hate farang
or
farang hate thais
topics have been done and redone and overdone several times on this forum. all the time leading to nothing but negativity and slagging off someone or the other.

its the new year, new week. so no. lets not :)

#3385693 Worst Joke Ever

Posted warfie on 2010-03-04 13:28:34

A man who lived in a block of flats thought it was raining and
put his hand out of the window to check. As he did so a glass eye
fell into his hand. He looked up to see where it came from in
time to see a girl looking down.

"Is this yours?" he asked.

She said, "Yes, could you bring it up?" and the man agreed.

On arrival she was profuse in her thanks and offered the man a
drink.

As she was very attractive he agreed. Shortly afterwards she said,
"I'm about to have dinner. There's plenty; would you like to
join me?"

He readily accepted her offer and both enjoyed a lovely meal.
As the evening was drawing to a close the girl said, "I have had
a marvelous evening, would you like to stay the night?"

The man hesitated then said, "Do you act like this with every
man you meet?"

"No," she replied, "Only those who catch my eye!"

#4953575 Mae Sai/Tachilek Border Info

Good times over?

I heard that the regulations concerning the amount of liquids and
other goods that can be brought from Burma are taken very serious
nowadays by the gentlemen who's task it is to implement them.

Unsuspectingly our highly respected friend Mr. A. returned to the
Thai side of the border last week and this in the company of a tray
containing twelve Bavaria's (Dutch Premium beer).

He was informed that he was allowed to import only six of them
and was invited to give the other six to the uniformed gentleman
himself.

The good man clearly didn't know who he was talking to and therefore
didn't realize that he was on a mission impossible: beers fall for Mr. A.
in the same category as blue suede shoes did for Elvis Presley.
He started to drink them on the spot and it was not until he was going
to open can number four, that the industrious law servant gave up and
waved him trough.

It might of course have been a temporary thing related to the
New Year celebrations ...
Did anybody else notice something unusual lately?

I was there two weeks ago. Yes my subjective impression is that the number of tourists is way up oover say five years ago. I didn't have any trouble finding a room, however. Also I took the bus rather than fly domestically, as you can always get a bus seat just turning up at the station.
I have been checking hotels on the web and could not find anything available for the first week of January. However the friendly Burmese travel agent on Pan road said he could probably get me a room for 40 USD a night.

The Myanmar visa section looked like a zoo when I went to pick up a visa application form today.

I am begining to think that I might put off my Yangon trip and head to Phnom Penh instead.

Checking Hotels on the web for Myanmar is nonsense, because - if they are actually listed on a hotel broker's website - the prices are easily DOUBLE the rate that you would get from a local agent in Yangon. Most of AGODA's rates for Myanmar for example, particularly for upscale-properties, are 50-100% more than the local going rate).
Just search online for LOCAL Yangon-based AGENT's websites. In many cases, they even list their prices on their websites (yes many DO have websites).

I am in touch with a VERY VERY good, reliable and inexpensive smaller agent in Yangon with decades of experience in the tourism business over there, but I can not post his companies' details here as it would be considered self-promotion or something. I have been using him on several occasions in the past few years.
If you want to know his contacts (email or phone) , then send me a PM.
he saved me HUNDREDS of Dollars just recently in August 2011, compared with international hotel-booking websites

#4889382 Expat Retirees In Thailand (And Potential Ones)

Unless a person was willing to essentially 'go native' - I don't think they'd be content to reside long term in Burma. That cuts out 99% of prospects.

The exception would be if the Burmese allocated 'foreign enclaves,' similar to Benidorm Spain, or Pattaya and Phuket (without the blatant sex services).  Where farang are essentially surrounded by farang things like fast food places, ATMs, malls, and English speaking support networks, etc.

I've been to Burma a hundred times, though usually for a day or two - longest was 2 weeks - in central region.  I like to bicycle all over - there are always new and interesting things to discover.

A couple of the subtle differences between Burmese and Thais:  Thais are more straight-laced than Burmese, who are more care-free.  Thais tend to think and act alike, and respond similarly to things.  In contrast, Burmese are more individualistic and not constricted by the required 1,000 structured ways to be polite. They're more real, in their actions and their words.
