Don't forget the caves up at Chiang Dao and the "Bat Cave" just west of Samoeng on the 1349.

Ditto to suggesting that also, google 'caves in Thailand', there are hundreds of cave in Thailand. When my son was 13 that was are favorite father son activity. There are endless wild caves, many well mapped safer caves, and several light and stair accessed tourist caves. We don't do this as often, but did enjoy a few nights at cave lodge this month caving.

Other suggestions that we enjoy;

Hiking

Mountain biking

we started off renting and joining tours.

Fishing,

commonly at Bosang Fishing lake (cheap cheap, big fish) and at Mae Ngat reservoir where we hire a boat for a half day.

Motorbike touring,

My personal fav, we've racked up maybe 50 k km's of great touring together. With plenty of the other activities, such as fishing, hiking and caving, done whilst touring.

Have a good visit

In Topic: British Teacher In A Coma After Brutal Assault In Pattaya

Have to add that after knowing many English teacher for a few years now, their provided health care is woefully inadequate. It's bare minimal coverage with many limitations of whats covered. Several times have shared beers with teachers, drowning their sorrow when they discovered their recent motorcycle accident hospital bills are not covered due to some exception on the 3000 baht a year group coverage.

In Pattaya you'd think it would be crazy not to carry more insurance - though I'm completely unaware of what Pattaya schools do offer their teachers.

WTF’s wrong with so many guys, leaving their brains at home when traveling?

Yes they do.

Too many times I've been sitting in a cafe in Pai or Samui, surrounded by back packers comparing road rash. Too many end up with worse - sad story about your ex girlfriend for example.

In Topic: Advice On Living In Rented House Without Speaking Thai

2012-05-23 13:34:35

I second the advice of obtaining the assistance of a fluent Thai speaker. As a single, tone death father with minimal Thai, found when viewing house on my own there was no wiggle room on the asking rates. Yet a friend, with a Chiang Mai accent, talked to 2 landlords for me and rates immeaditly dropped several thousand baht a month. When find a house I'll happily give my friend several months rent saving for their assistance.

The high rental rates I've be offered/shown are crazy high this year, and what drives me insane is knowing exactly what friends pay for house similar to what I'm looking for. Even showing a house that a friend rents for 5 k a month to a real estate lady whom shows me many houses, yet for that same price she houses that are not even half as nice as my friends.
