#5337730 Which Place In Thailand Holds The Best Memories For You?

Oh no......an impossible task......my best memory of Thailand.......can we make it my best 100 memories of Thailand??? Even that would be a struggle. The country is outstanding. Posted Image

Some of you will have seen this before, I've had to edit this story to fit this topic..........the background is that I didn't want to come to Thailand because of all the bad press......this encounter on my first day was a blessing, so it was the beginning of my love affair with Thailand........here goes.................

....................................................................................................................

My first trip to Thailand was Feb 2008, I had done a business deal and I was taken on holiday to Pattaya as a bonus. I was reluctant to go as I had heard all the usual nonsense about Thailand, but being Scottish I couldn't see the holiday go to waste.

I duly turned up at the hotel opposite Wonderful Bar 2 and you can imagine I was blown away with my first sight of Pattaya. The first afternoon there was live entertainment in the bar, so I wandered across and sat down on one of the stools. There was an older English guy doing his turn, and he had a good voice.

Once he finished he came to over my way and mentioned I had blagged his seat, I skipped up one and he sat with me. He asked me if it was my first time in Thailand, he must have smelled the newness off me. I said it was and to cut a long story short he launched into this story. If he is reading this, I hope he knows the impression he made on me.

" I was 59 and living in London when I lost my wife, I couldn't handle it, I loved that woman so much. For 18 months I was like a zombie, going to work, coming home, drinking by myself every night and just wanting it all to end, I was so miserable. My daughter kept pleading with me to get on with my life, but my life died with my wife. One day my daughter came into the house with my best friend, they had bought me a holiday to Thailand to try and get me out of my shell. I refused to go, no way I could contemplate going on holiday, it would be a betrayal of the memory of my wife, how could I enjoy myself?

My daughter burst into tears, and I relented, I was a miserable sod but now I was hurting my kids too. The day came for me to fly to Thailand and never was there a more reluctant tourist than me, all the way over I didn't want to be going on holiday, I was betraying my wife. I got to Pattaya and I was miserable, angry with myself for agreeing to come and the first day I was a nightmare, by day two I was starting to relax a little bit, and by day three I was starting to enjoy myself.

By the time the two weeks were over I went home and my daughter was ecstatic, she could see happiness in me, as she had already lost her Mum, and she felt she lost her Dad that day too. It was all I could do but get to work, save up and get back out again.

He went on to say.............The first girlfriend you get in Thailand is always the hardest to get rid of, you end up entrapped and unsure and that was a nightmare for me. Eventually it all ended, and I took up with another lady that didn't work out either, and it went on until I met my lady here.

I retired from my job, moved over here and got married, my best pal did the same thing and two other friends have moved here too. We all stay in the same villa, we get up at about 10.00am and go for a swim, the wives make brunch, we sit and eat together, and we all take off in different directions for the afternoon. Today I'm here because I love a sing song, my wife here is a sweetheart ( I would say she was about 54, and the gent I was talking to would be about 67 at the time ), and she looks after me so well.

He went on to say..........

" I would give all this up right now for my wife, I loved that woman so much, I would give up everything to be with her again........I thought my life was over when my wife died, but Thailand has given me a second chance at life............"

I hope that gentleman is still going strong and still loving life in Pattaya, and I bet you there are many men reading this and recognizing a bit of themselves in it........I think that was one of the best phrases I have ever heard in my life.

" Thailand has given me a second chance at life "

seriously, was a larger croc o' shite ever wrote?

i remember the first time you shared it, and suspect i had the same reaction.

Seriously, was there ever a post made which identifies to everyone reading what an a-hole someone can be ?

Passing comment on someone opening up and telling their story is rather dirty in my view. This is a positive thread, please don't tar it with your own scepticism and bitterness, keep that for the fellow on the barstool next to you....

For some reason I find myself having little sympathy for people in this predicament.

#5333683 Pattaya (Non)Metered Taxis

Posted PattayaParent on 2012-05-26 15:48:55

When these (non)metered taxis were first announced a couple of years ago there were 27 for a trial period to see how it went. They had their licence plates numbered 1 through 27.

Although they have not been of any use to Pattaya residents as they refuse to use the meter I did notice the numbers had increased to 54.

I was shocked and surprised today when driving along Sukhumvit to see a Pattaya (non)metered taxi with number 97. And while I was wondering if there really are about 100 of these useless vehicles clogging up the roads of Pattaya, along with the 300+ useless empty songthaews around, I was passed by number 158!!

And to make it worse I spotted heading out of Pattaya number 249!

Are these vehicles still following sequential numbering? Are there really so many of these useless vehicles on the road contributing to the traffic chaos?

If so I guess the introduction of these (non)metered taxis has been a resounding success for someone, but not for the residents of Pattaya.

#5328324 Do We Really Pay For It One Way Or Another?

Posted richard_smith237 on 2012-05-24 17:45:34

Of course we do….

I know I do, It takes time to make a relationship work - so I pay with my time, I buy my Wife presents - so I pay with presents (money), I often pay for dinner - so I pay for it that way too. My wife cooks for me - she pays for it too, she cleans the house - she pays for it that way, she takes me to the cinema or buys me dinner, she's paying for it and she's going to get it !, she tolerates my mood swings and I tolerate hers – we both pay for that....and when I’m away at work, we both pay for it :-(

We all pay for it, men and women.

My advice to the OP (and his wife) is very first thing, ask your wife if she has applied for a National Insurance Number - it is very likely that her employer has not done this.

The NI number is very important for longterm welfare, healthcare and pension access - So apply for an NI number.

Get that under her belt and then go along to the citizen's advice and ask for help and advice on what to do with the low wages.

The employer is breaking the law regarding wages. I would suspect that s/he's also pocketing tips and gratuities (not breaking the law IF written in the contract of employment) and it is very likely that s/he is breaking laws regarding other aspects of your wife's employment.

These are RIGHTS that are being abused and for which your wife has an entitlement - she's being robbed.

The good news is that if confronted she will almost certainly have HER missing wages paid to her + compensation.

Reporting an employer who is breaking the law is not 'bad form' - its about asserting your wife's rights and getting her rightful payment for her work.

Tell her she's in the UK now, she doesn't have to lick ass.

Well said GH....OP why does your wife need to do anything as regards reporting the employer....your are British and in your own country...grow a pair and you report the f8kcers....they are not in Thailand now...you are not going to fall off a balcony or get a visit from the BIB to exact revenge..

#5297204 "Chocolate" People

Posted Pseudolus on 2012-05-13 16:35:43

Stupid bloody question and there is nothing racist in answering it either. Some Thais call Black people Chocolates due to the colour of their skin which can resemble chocolate in colour. So, assuming you already knew or might have guessed it, what is the point of your stupid question or are you really so stupid that this passed you by?

Let me get this right. You are so beneficent as to think that gay people are allowed some rights that you enjoy but not all?

Well, wait.  Gay people have the same rights and limitations straight people. A straight man can't marry another man either, so it's not like gays are discriminated against.  If straight people WERE allowed to marry men than that would indeed be discrimination.  Posted Image
What a silly, tired old, ridiculous argument. Hetero people are allowed to marry the person they love. Homosexual people are not. That is not equality. That is discrimination by definition. How about this idea to make it equal? Hetero people allowed only to marry same sex. Homosexual people allowed only to marry opposite sex (status quo). There's your equality.

You mean Howard "why are you filming me covertly" Miller?

Yes, that would be me.Posted Image

That video cracks me up.  What was the real story behind it anyway?  Was the guy up to no good or were you just having a bad day?

What the video fails to show is that guy was following me all night. That wasn't our first exchange. I have no problem with anyone filming me in the usual manner but he was trying to get some secret shots of me and kept hiding his camera on his lap as he sat at a bar nearby. Don't really know why he needed to do that as it was a boring night and all I was doing was sitting around for most of it. When the You Tube video came out it was twisted around and I saw no point in defending myself at the time as no one would have believed me. You are the first person to actually ask me what happened since the video came out 3 years ago.......pretty much says it all really.

Not a very interesting story really and I am sure it's a bit of an anti-climax for many who watched the video.

Whether the story told to the OP is true or not, most people who live in Thailand will find it believable, which is a very sad reflection upon the reputation of our police force.

Have to feel sorry for the honest police officers here.

For the ''what'' here. ?

I've made a few inquiries, and it seems that US Navy ships scheduled for port of call here is indeed kept strictly hush-hush.

It's a massive security risk. I would be suprised if you could find out before they get here. Loose lips sink ships.

edit - spelling.

Recreational Activies for the Navy Guys are oganized well before they hit the shore, Also Hotel Rooms have to be bookend, Transport organized and so on. Its not a war zone around here, so I guess its not a problem. Btw. since the time of satellites its very hard to hide a ship anyway.

I didn't realise that when you book a hotel or an event you have to say you are coming in on a warship. I also didn't realise that terrorists had radar. WOW, how did you find that out.
You are correct about one thing.......Pattaya isn't a war zone. But answer me one question, do terrorists only live in war zones?

Every country i have visited, we always had a port authority. They deal with cranes, fuel, transport and a lot of other things. On the ship it's the job of my branch to contact them and tell them are requirments.
Hotels are booked by the people that want them. Not a group booking like you think. Not the ships problem if you don't want to sleep on the ship.
Yes, some places get contacted to try to get free tickets, but they are not given times or dates. They just normally say to us, you can go here or here. We normally find things to do on the internet and go.

If your knowledge of the navy is better than a serving member, please stand up and correct me or add your wealth of experiance.
