#5339464 A Chiang Mai Boy Is Seeking For Foreign Friends !

Posted eek on 2012-05-28 17:49:01

Just wondering if we can keep on track and not focus on ajpsjeng English/language ability...? Its not even remotely close to what he requested. I have met several Thai's fluent in English and slang. Maybe create another thread if a debate is desired?

Edit: Dont mean that to come across as rude. Just that he is a new member, with a specific request, and really would be sad to lose a young Thai member in particular, due to ...well..you know..the usual.

"English not bad for a Thai"

That is very condescending.

He was a great guy, with a winning smile and very good taste in music.
He will be sorely missed.
Goodbye, Mana.

For a person who is obsessed with reducing risk, Thailand seems to be a very, very odd choice for a place to live.

The only place where most TV posters are guaranteed to show up, is where there is free booze and food.

Then again this is a country where "gaming the system" is the system.

What we need to do is get another article published with a link to TV where potential newcomers can get a taste of all the whinging gits that currently live here. Maybe that'd put 'em off....... Posted Image

Cheers,

Pikey.

DTV are showing the games but Supporting the England football team in big competitions is just like sex.

An unnecessary amount of hype is created for something that will inevitably end prematurely.

#5326024 Advice On Living In Rented House Without Speaking Thai

Posted JeffreyMcCollum on 2012-05-23 22:18:08

I purchased a home, not rent, in a small Moo Baan just outside of CM.  I was the only Expat English speaking in teh small neighborhood.  I know basic Thai as I am sure you do too.  I said friendly Good morning to my neighbors and in the 6 months here they all have started talking some basic English.  A few homes are for rent in the price you say, and everyone has been so nice.  Helping each other and watching things.  They bring me food to try, as I bring to them too.  One time when I was hurt working on my home, the neighbors rushed over and in to help and called for an ambulance that saved my life.   Guess I will stick around a while.  I think you will do fine with a little effort

#5325447 Cheapest Western Meals On The South Side Of Chiang Mai

Posted JimShortz on 2012-05-23 18:53:59

Hi southern Chiang Mai Cheap Charlies; you know who you are! Lets see if anyone can beat this one! My latest discovery...

Fish and chips (small portion, but very tasty) - 50 Baht
Burger in a bun with salad + chips - 35 Baht
Iced Latte, 30 Baht

They actually do a lot of other stuff, including Thai food, but my kids like both of these best, and I like the cheap coffee and beers at shop prices...

It's a small open fronted cafe called "The Nest" run by a lady who is very well spoken and speaks pretty good English; she even has a selection of English books to read, and is just very nice, with a bit of class! - hence me writing this up, she deserves to do well, but due to location and being new is not too busy at the moment...

So, the location: Head south on the Hangdong Road, go past Tesco/Lotus, and then take the next left turn (it's after a couple hundred metres and directly opposite a blocked off u-turn). Follow that road for a kilometre or so as it wiggles through some ridiculously tight (hard 90 degree) turns. Eventually you arrive at a T-Junction where a market is held on Saturday, Monday and Wednesday afternoons. You have now gone 20m too far. Turn around and you see it on your left.

PS It only holds a maximum of about 20 people inside and out. If I arrive there and it's packed I am going to ask who heard about this on Thaivisa and expect you to give up your seat for me!

I was thinking bar, evening time about 7pm?  We could meet first in the beer area of Big C # 2 (as they call it, used to be Carrefour) and then nominate somebody to choose the next venue? Probably not much there to look at but it would be a start. Any other thoughts, if your not a Hang-Dongian you have to bring 2 yum yums with you, OK.

More seriously:  How to we ensure that only true Hang Donglers join, and no beady eyed folk from lesser districts come crashing the party?   Should we require a residence statement from Immigration, a work permit or Thai driver's license?

bu-bu-but I work in Hang Dong :(

Live near Wat Umong.

This sounds like a good idea. I know there's talk of an eventual TV member 'party' in the works - weren't they affectionately called 'pissups' not too long ago ? But it could be fun for a few of us to meet and check out the Big C courtyard or any of the ring roads' bars. I rarely make time to sit n enjoy time out of my usual haunts in town, but remember fondly the times I used to back a few years ago. Many of them have better-than-reasonable beer and food specials. IN fact, the food can be pretty serious at some of the unassuming roadside bars.

Btw, I'm super excited by Farlongs like Winnie being happy to use songtells !

Winnie, this isn't the correct strategy. Don't do it. First Nancy condoning it, and now you imitating it.

Please reconsider.
