#5341087 Peculiar Thai Habit Of Allowing Books To Be Read In The Shop

Posted bendix on Yesterday, 07:59

Happens all over the world.  Pretty much any decent bookshop worth its salt welcomes readers in and provides comfortable environments for them to read - some even providing chairs.  I used to go to a shop in Norwich - one of the chains in fact - that let you take books to the instore coffeeshop.  Shops here in HK do the same.

For me, the two large English language bookshops in Emporium and Siam Paragon are the best new bookshops I have ever seen in Asia, and - frankly - beat many of the shops in the UK.

Tell me you intend to cook all this in dripping and I am in...Posted Image

Yes, let's do it correcty

I agree. Whatever you do don't cook it in hydrogenated vegetable oil. That stuff kills.

Is Dripping still availble in the UK ?, would have thought the HSE nazi's with their fluorscent hi-vis jackets putting a stop to using dripping in a chippy

You can still get it, it comes in industrial size tubs, and I agree that is the only way to deep fry, in dripping.........Posted Image

I'm not sure I could really enjoy cod, chips and mushy peas without a cold wind-swept beach to look at and a bus stop to huddle in?

That would be like eating som tam in the snow, or eating a kebab when sober  .... some things need context to be fully enjoyed.

#4908377 What Is The Value Of A Thai Passport?

Posted timbershifter on 2011-12-13 05:31:22

Hi JacknDanny

I think you are wrong there, i am a South African and my wife Thai and she
fly to SA at least 3 times a year alone, no visa required and no hassels at
Cape Town or JHB immegration and get a 30 day stamp.
The only shit she  picked up is with  thai immegration on leaving and when checking
in for the flight to SA, they told her to change Bht to USD 400, otherwise easy easy

Cheers

#5324015 Americans Abandoning Citizenship In Record Numbers Due To Government Tax/Fine...

I know for a fact that the US recruits Thai bank staff and offers them payment for information on American accounts. We can assume they are doing this elsewhere. The IRS will know.
it goes without saying that the IRS recruits Thai bank staff because it is well known fact that a huge number of high net worth Americans (most of them teachers) handle billions of their 'black money' through the sophisticated investment channels which Thai banks provide. nobody is interested in offshore companies and trusts kept in Hong Kong and Singpore banks because of the tedious procedures in these jurisdictions.

simple transactions such as transferring 500,000 dollars value of any foreign currency involve extensive paperwork and permissions by various HK or SG government authorities whereas the American client of a Thai bank phones his bank and issues the verbal instruction "you transfer ha loy pan dolla leo leo from my account to account xyz987" and gets the answer "khrapom!"

another setback as far as banking out of Thailand is concerned that withdrawing  ten-thousand Singapore Dollars in cash from an account in a  Singapore Bank requires the account holder to present his passport as well as a funny little booklet, notarising the photocopy of his passport with his signature, sign a few papers and then wait till the cashier counts bundles of small denominations and doles out the cash.

withdrawals from an account in Thailand are much simpler. walk to the cashier tell him your account number, sign a slip and take your 220k in a few notes in high denominations.

#5323569 Thai Wife Underpaid In Uk

Posted GuestHouse on 2012-05-23 06:16:52

My advice to the OP (and his wife) is very first thing, ask your wife if she has applied for a National Insurance Number - it is very likely that her employer has not done this.

The NI number is very important for longterm welfare, healthcare and pension access - So apply for an NI number.

Get that under her belt and then go along to the citizen's advice and ask for help and advice on what to do with the low wages.

The employer is breaking the law regarding wages. I would suspect that s/he's also pocketing tips and gratuities (not breaking the law IF written in the contract of employment) and it is very likely that s/he is breaking laws regarding other aspects of your wife's employment.

These are RIGHTS that are being abused and for which your wife has an entitlement - she's being robbed.

The good news is that if confronted she will almost certainly have HER missing wages paid to her + compensation.

Reporting an employer who is breaking the law is not 'bad form' - its about asserting your wife's rights and getting her rightful payment for her work.

Tell her she's in the UK now, she doesn't have to lick ass.

If I drop 1 baht my girlfriend bends down to get it so quickly it lands on the back of her head - makes it easy for me to pick up.

You sound like a complete banker.

Did you mean wan_ker?

Seriously to the OP, there is a little boutique B&B on Soi 7/1 called the Eden Club. I'm sure it will meet your demanding requirements. As far as transport, I'm sure you can book a limo at the airport for a few thousand baht.
