About Me
My Thai partner and I were married during Loy Khrathong this year and have been together for almost eight years. I found ThaiVisa Forum while doing internet searches for ways to learn about Thailand and Thai language and culture. We make our home in Phetchabun province, although we are actually closer to the city of Phichit than to the city of Phetchabun.
I've worked in the engineering and technology fields for many years, and currently work in the data center business. I've lived and worked in many countries throughout North America, Europe, Asia and the Middle East, and am currently working stateside.
In no particular order, I believe:
- everyone is entitled to their own wrong opinion.
- that left alone, the free markets will solve more problems and better serve the public at large than any government.
- that governments should be in the business of governing, not in the business of running businesses.
- government lotteries are just another way to get the poor man to pay taxes.
- people should generally be left alone to do what they want to do, so long as they don't cause any harm or imposition to me or anyone else.
- in the "Free to Choose" teachings of the late, great Nobel laureate Dr. Milton Friedman ( http://www.miltonfri...n.blogspot.com/ ).
- in the small government, libertarian views of the great economist Dr. Walter E. Williams ( http://www.gmu.edu/d.../economics/wew/ ), especially his lectures on "Economics for the Citizen" and his enlightening documentary "The State Against Blacks."
- the social, political, race and economic insights and commentaries of the great Thomas Sowell ( http://www.jewishwor...ols/sowell1.asp ).
- the concept of man-made global warming is the biggest fraud being thrust upon free societies today (and the last several years of weather trends are proving this to be correct).
- in the concept of Pascal's Wager ( http://en.wikipedia....cal's_Wager ).
- the United Nations is one of the most corrupt fraudulent organizations in the world.
- America is rapidly heading toward socialism like western Europe.
- the American constitution and its amendments (The Bill of Rights) are some of the most important documents in the history of men.
- that after almost two years of trying to destroy America from within by leftist bullying tactics, Barack Obama has just been given a political wake-up call. I'm betting that he will continue to let his hard-leftist ideology dominate over common sense the the will of the American people, and that he will be tossed out of office in a landslide defeat in two years.

In Topic: How Do You Cope/Plan To Cope In Thailand When 70+
2012-01-30 10:47:56
I'm mid-fifties and not looking to retire anytime before age 70, if at all, but with every passing year the meaning of the thread has a little more relevance. Haven't read the last couple of pages, but for those with western benefits, such as social security, medicare, etc. (while they last anyway), my suggestion is to not lose touch with your home country and benefits you may have earned from a lifetime of work. I don't plan on retiring to Thailand full time. My wife and I have spoken about spending half the year in the US and half the year in Thailand, although a lot will depend on her daughter's progress through high school and college, and where she ends up. If I die in Thailand, my wife is to have me cremated and put on a shelf in the local temple. If in the US, then donate my body to science. My biggest fear is that morally and financially bankrupt western governments will end up screwing retirees out of money and health benefits which have been promised. I don't ever want to end up in a retirement home where someone other than family to care for me. I don't expect to live past my 70's because of complications from earlier health problems, but if of when the time comes that I'm unable to work any longer, I have faith that my wife will take care of me.
In Topic: One Night In Bkk, What To Do?

We eneded up going to Siam Niramit. It was a fantastic performance! My wife and her daughter probably enjoyed it more than I did. As others have suggested in previous posts, the buffet dinner was pretty much unremarkable, although there was no shortage of amount or different types of food.
There is an option to buy "gold" seats, which might not be a bad idea if the show was selling out. But the theater is huge and our show was not crowded at all, maybe 25-30% sold. Our seats were just to the right of the gold seats, every bit as good for 500 baht less.
IMHO, this show should be on a must-see list for anyone looking for something to do in Bkk.

For me, one experience that I had was a visit to the Thai Cultural Show … Siam Niramit.
It's the total package when it comes to an enjoyable night out for all ages. The grounds have representations of the Thai lifestyle from the different geographical areas, including houses which you can walk through, music playing and some free food sampling.

What was the dress code at Siam Niramit? Casual or dress-up?
In Topic: THAI Tests Out Biofuel Flight

Every time I see biofuel, all I can think of is "What a scamming crock of bs." It costs more energy to produce than it provides in return. It costs far more than traditional petroleum-based jet fuel.
Not to politicize the thread, but biofuel is a political agenda, not an economic solution, as demonstrated by example here:

I would much rather see Thai Airways focus on other areas: profitability, customer service, equipment improvements, etc.
