#5335362 Pg Poll: Thai English Skills

Posted KarenBravo on 2012-05-27 10:42:57

As usual in Thailand, this comes down to "face".

I've met lots of Thais that can read and write English to a high degree, yet, can hardly speak a word.
They would rather not speak it at all than speak it at the beginners stage and "lose face" because it might not be correct, which is just a normal stage in learning any new language.

Karen Bravo..."Bravo"!!! I think it's pretty arrogant to expect the locals of any country to able to speak decent English or some other language other that their own for the convenience of foreigners, especially those of us who have been here for an extended period of time. It's just as diffilcult for Thais to learn English as it is for Euros, Yanks, Aussies, etc. to learn Thai.

No - but the ASEAN group think that learning English language skills has value. Watch how superior the Cambodians - and even Laoations - are with not only English, but other languages. The appear to have the incentive and motivation to learn. This is something that the Thais seem to lack - and I won't even start on the standard of English teaching skills.

I went to luang prabang in Laos and I was amazed at the standards of English and even French. Thailand could take learn a thing or two from its neighbours.

Maxman71: how come? English is de facto esperanto, which is currently the most common language in the world. If people from smaller languages wishes to interact with the rest of the world, they simply have to learn English in current world. That has nothing to do with arrogance, it's simply practicality.

It's great if us who live in this country will learn local language, but that is not and will not be required for the visitors of this country. Still there is a need to communicate. That's why it's very important for locals to learn English if they wish to be able to talk to people from various countries.

It's not so far back in the time when French was the language of the diplomats. Some day in the future people will value Chinese way more than today.

#5327173 Warning! Fake Bt1,000 And Bt100 Banknotes Circulating In Thailand

How long before the Thai's start confiscating legitimate notes from Falang saying they are counterfeit? I smell a new scam.

The lot we had on Samui some years back had a few bits missing - the little circle with an orange and purple logo on the right side of the King's neck on the front, and on the back the "snowflakes" (for wont of a better term) behind the King's head.
They were also missing the watermark.

A few were given out by ATMs, but if you went in to the bank to complain, the staff would deny such a thing was possible and confiscate the notes.

i love this quote:

Quote

The fake banknotes are smaller in size than the real one and when you pour water on the fake ones the color will fade.

Good god, if you are going to go to all the trouble of counterfeiting money, i would think the dimensions of the bill itself would be the one thing that is actually easy to get right.

The counterfeiters are obviously a few satang short of a Baht

Surat by far. To go there there are 2 options: the old road, which is 2/3 4 lane already, rest is being upgraded at the moment, and the new Krabi-Surat Road, all 4 lane, with normally not a soul in sight.

I prefer the old one, shorter and therefor the quicker road I think.

For the old road: take the road left where Surat is indicated, for the new road: continue at the Surat sign for about 25 km and follow signs for Surat there.

Steve are you talking about route 44, the unfinished "landbridge"? Kind of interesting history behind it. It even has it's own wiki page. That space in the center was supposed to be for train tracks and pipelines.  There is not a single intersection in 190km. It's probably the only road in Thailand where you can pin the throttle for an entire tank of gas. I have always assumed it was a casualty of the '97 crash.

http://en.wikipedia....ailand_Route_44

.
Yes, that's the one. Nice road, problem is it is a detour of all in all about 40 km's over a less than 200 km's road distance. Since I drive about 120 km/h simply not worth it for me, since on the other road I can also drive at almost the same speed. To lazy for the calculation right now, but I guess you'd have to go about 180 km/h on that road, especially since the first 25 k detour are really slow on a 2 lane road.

Route 44 always gets a mention when this question is asked, so sad person that I am, the last time I did this trip I timed myself on both routes.  I also drive about 120kmh.  The cross country route (routes 415 & 401) took me about 1 hour 10 mins.  To get from and to the same points by using route 44 took me an hour and a half.

I guess 20 mins is not a big difference and if you want an easy drive then route 44 is the way to go.  Personally I think the cross country route is a more enjoyable drive.

Ask the writer of the Immigration Act 2545.

Why should the minimum income for a married foreigner (to a Thai) be THB 45,000/month and for a retiree THB 65,000/month?

Similar question.........must be Thai logic.

Actually it's 40,000 THB for male foreigner married to a Thai.

Phuket is vastly overated.

Just up the road, past Khao Lak, is the hedonistic town of Takuapa. Man, the fleshpots and girls in that place are something to behold - you should really move there.

Actually the UK is doing very well . Unemployment is on the down , production is on the up. The government Deficit on the way down. its because of whats happening in Europe  is masking the UK true economic output. The UK true out put is also masked, for example The wings for the Airbus are made in the UK , but then flown to France for assembly, Then France says we have sold x amount of Air buses, so France gets the Economical benefits.

#5303797 Whats The Best Way To Send Money To Thai Gf

Posted David48 on 2012-05-16 05:38:15

Just some friendly advice (that you didn't ask for) ...

If you are contemplating sending a monthly 'salary' to a Thai Lady, typically they send between 4,000 and 10,000 Baht home to their family (stereotypically in Issan) depending on their disposable income.

Requests for amounts higher then that make you a rich Banker ... if you get my drift.

Think of money in their terms … the minimum wage (but does often appear to be the average wage for Factory workers etc) in Bangkok is 300 Baht … about $10 a day, and in the provinces it is 180 Baht, so while it may not be much money to you … it maybe a weeks wages to them

OH, you might be surprised to discover that you may not be the only one assisting in the welfare of your friend.  kawapower's comment above is often the case.

There is much written here on the various Forums if you have the inclination to search.

OH … if you find my comment above in any offensive, then please have this post reported to the Moderators and they will most likely remove it from your thread as being 'off topic' ... just trying to be helpful.
