Hi,
I am an American about to take on my first teaching job. It is at a uni teaching mostly business classes with some general education classes thrown in. It's one 3 hour class a day. I have a B.S. in Business and an MBA. I'm not worried about the material.
However, I am concerned how to "act". Are there any resources I can read that will tell me the do's and don'ts of teaching in a Thai school, ways of getting better student participation, etc. etc? Basically, a "New Farang Teacher's Guide to Teaching University in Thailand"?

Where To Get Motorbike Insurance In San Sai Noi?
2012-05-09 18:04:58
Just bought a used bike, have no idea if it is insured or not so I want to get a new policy. I here there are many shops around, but I have no idea what to look for. One close to my house would be the best. In live near Meechok Plaza (Rimping) in San Sai Noi.
Anyone know of an agent in this area?
Thanks

Having To Pay For Own Work Permit/Visa
2012-05-01 13:29:27
I am being offered a job at a uni (to teach business classes) in Chiang Mai. Pay is 30k and they pay half of my 3% tax. However, they told me it is my responsibility to pay for the work permit/visa but they will offer all the paper work needed. Questions: a)is this normal? OK? b)how much in total will I need to get this wp/visa?
Thanks

Electric Rate Go Up?
2012-04-28 15:15:02
Last month, I paid 3.59 baht (pre-tax) per unit of electricity. My gf told me that she heard that electric rates were to go up 8%, so I checked this month's bill and it is now 3.74 baht which isn't quite 8%. Also, does the rate increase with the amount that you use? For example, I've heard that if you bill is less than 200 or so baht, they wont even bill you. So I don't know if my increase is because of higher use (last month=544 units, this month=937), or if it is an across the board increase. OR, is the 8% increase still to come?
Anyone know or have info on this?
Thx
PS: Still a hell of a lot cheaper than the US!

My Water Is Getting Too Hot From Sun
2012-04-17 13:16:38
I rent a house and it has a big dark blue tank that I guess holds my house's potable water. I guess the water to refill it comes from a city pipe? Anyway, by about noon until after sundown (and will get longer as the days lengthen) the water coming from the tank is SCALDING. I can't even wash my hands or do dishes. I have to turn the shower heater completely off. While I like the idea of using "green" power to heat my water (i.e. no electricity) not being able to wash my hands or do dishes when I want is a pain and it will stay this way for months.
Aside from asking my landlord to build some type of cover shed, is there anything that I can do? Or is this something I should be lucky to have?
