Ear Specialist Required

2011-12-27 11:48:09

I live some 200km south of Chiang Mai and am desperately in need of an ear specialist who knows what he is doing.  About 4 months ago I suffered a serious bout of ear ache which, after a week, went away and left me with impaired hearing.  Went to the local hospital and they found no wax blockage, but the tests showed me to have reduced hearing.  At a cost of 16,000 they made me a hearing aid.  Unfortunately the pain has returned so now I think I really should find a specialist.  If anyone can recommend someone, especially who speaks English I would be most grateful.

Bloody Neighbours

2011-07-14 15:48:27

Perhaps someone can give me some legal advice on a small problem I have with a neighbour (Or at least confirm MY view on the matter). In January we purchased an additional parcel of land at the foot of our garden with the intention of building a swimming pool.  The land is surrounded on all four sides by neighbouring properties.  To the south and west the boundary walls are owned by the neighbours.  To the east we built a new wall to separate us from the person who sold us the land, and to the north we removed our own wall.We have had nothing but problems from the old fart who lives to the south of us. He complained immediately that, because we needed to raise our land by about 18 inches he would be overlooked, and insisted that we build a wall alongside his.  My wife, being a Thai, could not come straight out and say” get f----cked”, but said only that she had no money for that.  Whilst the pool was being constructed we planted dense bushes along his entire boundary and some 4 feet away from it so that he wouldn’t be overlooked.During construction of the pool he constantly complained to the workforce about the noise.  We also purchased a puppy which did a bit of howling when shut in the kennel overnight- he complained to the local councillor about that!  He complained that the raised soil level would damage his wall.  We created a fall so that the soil finished below the beam of the wall.  He then complained because the water collected in the created gully when it rained.  We dug out and put in drainage to deeply set concrete rings with an automatic pump to pump it away.  He complained to the local councillor again saying that he didn’t want the drain close to his wall and continued to insist upon a new wall being constructed against his.The latest is that he is saying when he built the wall (many years ago) he built it within his boundary.  I assume from that that he considers part of the land on my side to belong to him!None of these complaints were made to me directly (it wouldn’t have served much purpose since my Thai is limited and I would probably have been a little impolite anyway).  My wife is easy going and hates confrontation so the only response she gives is that she has no money for the job. I’ve told her that the guy doesn’t have a leg to stand on but all she can say is “this is Thailand”.  By that does she mean that our neighbours can dictate to us what we can, or cannot do on our own property?

Trading Futures

As a farang on a non working visa how would you stand with trading in futures?  Do the Thai authorities consider this to be working ?  Also does the farang have to pay tax on profits to the Thai authorities and how much?

Golfing In Uttaradit

2010-12-02 09:03:54

Hi,
I've lived in Uttaradit for two years and frequently played on the army golf course.  There are no farangs playing this course and non of the players speak English.  At my old club in the UK the cameraderie was  fabulous and it is this that I miss about the UK above all else.  It would be nice to get together a small group of like minded guys who speak English with a view to developing that cameraderie.  For those who haven't visited this course recently I can tell you that it is fairly well maintained by a large number of friendly ladies and has now been extended to 18 holes. If anyone is interested I would love to hear from you.  By the way my handicap was 18 in the UK but for some reason I'm having big problems bettering a score of 100 here.

Renting A Car

2010-08-29 08:55:22

After 18 months in Thailand I visited the UK for a couple of weeks in May.  I paid Sixt car rental in advance by credit card through the internet.Everything went OK, the car was fine abd trouble free but when I returned it they went over it with a fine toothcomb.   They found a blister in the front nearside tyre, about the size of half a gob stopper.  There were a lot of photographs taken and I was asked to sign a paper confirming that the blister occured during my hire.  I qualified this by stating that, in my opinion, the problem lay with the tyre manufacture and not me.Their claims form followed me to Thailand.  This was completed with many "non-applcables" and the same qulification that the claim should be made to the tyre manufacturer.Every two weeks or so following that I have received a request for payment of £128.89 and have replied with the utmost courtesy that I didn't accept responsibility with an explanation as to why.  These replies have been ignored and I now have a final letter advising me that the matter will be passed onto solicitors if not paid by 24th.  Due to postal delays this deadline has passed. One point I should mention is tha, when I collected the car, the reception advised me that the first £80.00 of any damage claim is automatically covered by insurance.  This has not been mentioned in their claim against me.How do I stand legally?  Can they take the money from my credit card without my permission?  I was in business for many years and I know that. were I in their position, I would recognise this as waste of time and drop the claim.
