#5341586 Bypassing Someone In Need

Posted bonobo on Yesterday, 11:09

I am rather disturbed today, and have been thinking about this most of the morning instead of concentrating on work.

During my commute this morning, I hit my first u-turn as usual.  This is a fairly high speed u-turn going under a bridge.  There are three lanes.  Two are adjacent with one going each way.  There is a raised median, then another single lane which is one way.  The exit off the main road is about 300 meters from the actual u, so cars get up a good bit of speed going, especially in the single, one-way lane.

I was in the one-way lane when I saw an old beat-up  bike in the road, so I shifted a bit not to hit it.  As I passed it, I realized that there was an unmoving man underneath.  I could not stop due to cars coming in back of me and there being no room to back up with those cars, so I went to the next u-turn and doubled back, which took a bit of time.  But the man was still there, so I stopped my car and blocked him from on-coming traffic.

The man was very still, and I thought he was dead.  But he had a pulse, even if he was unresponsive.  A motorcycle messenger driving on the other lanes over the median saw me and stopped, first asking me if I hit him.  I told him no, so he got on the phone.  Once the two of us were standing there, others took notice.

They guy was skinny man, filthy, with no shirt nor shoes on.  He had two thumbs on his left hand, and one was very obviously broken.  With us standing over him, he opened his eyes.  One pupil was pointed up somewhat, and the other had almost disappeared in the inside corner is his eye.  He would not respond at first, but then he seemed to get a hold of himself and told the other guy that he had crashed sometime during the the night.  I didn't catch if he just crashed or if a car had hit him.

The guy needed helped, so I told him, through the other guy, that I would take him to the hospital, but he refused, and got up before I could stop him (afraid of brain damage, I didn't think he should move.)  He thanked us, then got on his bike and rode off unsteadily.

I could smell no alcohol on him, so I don't think this was a drunk falling down and passing out.  I think he either fell or was hit and was unconscious.

What bothered me was that probably a thousand cars swerved to miss him (I am amazed that none ran over him), but no one stopped to help.  He obviously was in trouble.

And I wondered at this man's life.  Filthy, no short nor shoes, two thumbs on his hand.  His eyes probably were like that before, but these are things which regularly addressed within the medical system back in the west, even for the poor.  Regardless, one of his thumbs was badly broken, but he didn't seem to feel he should get medical care.

I have been bothered thinking about this throw-away man.  I come to work in a big factory.  Our employees are not rich, by any stretch of the imagination, but they live well,  I live in a nice complex, and everyone there lives well.  But this man does not.  And when in trouble, he is treated no different than a soi dog who gets hit by a car and left to rot at the side of the road.

He is gone now, but I wish I could track him down and see just how he lives, and how can his life be made better.

#5338872 Death Of The Death Hotel

Posted Beetlejuice on 2012-05-28 14:34:11

It appears that all the evidence is litually being sweeped under the carpet, or in this case, descretely cleared away. The name of the game is, out of sight, out of mind and than forgotten.

Was there ever a thorough investigation? Did the foreign offices of the national’s concerned pressure the Thai authorities to conduct an investigation? Has anyone been brought to book over this? Have any of the victims families received justice? Somehow I doubt it.

This is all about cover-ups and what’s bad for business. Not many would want to stay in a hotel where a multitude of guests have died, so better to knock it down and start again, perhaps by the same outfit that owned the Downtown Inn?

Lots of questions with little or no answers, extremely tragic and sad for the innocent victims and their families, who have lost loved ones with no chance of receiving compensation or any answers as to why and how.

A totally disgusting state of affairs.

After working in Thailand for many, many years in the service industry, I really do feel that there is a cross-cultural issue with farang bosses and Thai staff. Experience proved - for me at least - that a good Thai deputy was required who did the hiring and firing and instructing of staff and the farang boss dealt with him or her rather than anyone else. It may not suit your situation but it's my 2 cents worth.

yes i am also aware of that, and did try having a manager. the result was also rather disappointing,

With 1 manager, they all did nothing if i was not there, and when i say nothing, i mean nothing, they all sat around lobby like a group of monkey's and ate all day long(was watching them from across the road.

The next manager, was little better, but kept asking for instructions every 5 mins, so was kind of useless to have him

The last one was great in terms of doing his job and training new staff, HOWEVER all went tits up when he hit the bottle and cards.

Also another problem with having a manager and allowing him to run the business is should he leave or be found doing something dodgy, the moment he quits or gets fired the entire staff also run away

I realize i come across being very negative, but am not at all, just speaking from experience of what has happened to me.

On a positive note, a number of my ex employees returned asking for their job back after a few months. I would strongly advise NOT to take them back, as i have discovered recently, they do the same thing they did last time-ie run away without a notice

Funny a few guys mention older people.

I have also tried that, even went as far as 60

They did not disappear, they were stealing (thinking i would not notice) and did hardly anything, ie just sit there and watch others work.

One of the funniest things once, was my maid who was in late 30's advised reception, guy was mid 50's that the lights blown in one room.

His response was "go get a ladder and change it" mind you reception was dead ie no customers, plus there were 2 people on the shift in reception and myself.

The very same man also ALWAYS washed his hands with drinking water from the machine,

They flee when they discover you are expecting them to actually do work?

I've seen staff quit a good paying job to take a position that pays less but not much performance is expected.
You know, arrive late, take a nap, play facebook, eat, pretend to work a bit  then go home early....

And now she's the large one "at large."

#5294492 Where To Find Electronic Components Anywhere In Thailand?

Posted AleG on 2012-05-12 16:33:25

Surayu, are you in Bangkok? If so you should definitely go to Bahn Mo, it's the electronics district in the city. You can find pretty much anything you may need there, the act of actually finding it among the hundreds of small shops being the fun of it. :)

Electronics Source is located in that area, not sure about the others. I've been to ES many times and they have good service although slow if you show up at the shop, expect to wait around for half an hour or more while they put your order together. You can also order by mail, they deliver quite fast.

At Ban Moh check "Ban Moh Plaza" there are three entrances but they are easy to miss, inside there are dozens of shops that not only sell all sort of electronic components and hardware but also automation and robotics hardware, so if you are planing to make something move with those servos this is a good place to get ball bearings, gears, rails, shafts, etc, etc...

The headline of this thread says "Innovative Thai Advertising With A Risk Of Losing Your Bank Card". I don't see how you could lose your bank card though? It seems like if you just answer the question your card comes straight out. Or if you wait for a while and don't answer the question, does your card get kept by the ATM?

don't be simple: this is highly unethical!  Bank ATM's are not there to disturb customers with this kind of stupid questions.  It's despicable and disgusting!  What a low key practise is his!

This is more or less what I ment.
If you say "No" are they "offended", meaning you don't get your card back.

Writing the discrimination down doesn't make it any less discriminatory.
