Just back in UK after 3.5 weeks based in Lamai. I've been going to Samui twice a year since 2005 and I would say it's the quietest I've seen it. The Outback Bar and Fusion were dead on quite a few nights. Considering Supersub is now gone, Fusion should be full every night.

So you were here in low season, the quietest time of the year and it was quiet, amazing

so i am azuming that you are asuming that everyone that comes to samui heads stragiht down the local clubs and the families and the 5 star hotels an people who rent villas that are fully booked cannot be in samui because the clubs are not full.

could it be that there is more to offer tourists hear now than getting out yr nut at the local clubs and bars.

Maybe the back backers that mostly occupy these places have moved on and now we have have respectable hard core mafia hear now and we kiow how 2 run tings. rpctect!

You "azume" wrong.

Would expect that a fair number of visitors to Chaweng or Lamai, whatever their purpose, do go out in the evening to a bar, to the night markets or to a restaurant. And my impression is that numbers were down. A personal observation.

As mentioned in my OP, I am not a backpacker and was staying with other friends in midrange resorts.

Have been visiting all areas of this island twice each year since 2005 so unless the patterns of tourism has changed totally, then I reckon there must be some validity to my observations.

Mid-December onwards is classified as high season judging by room rates on the island. I was around until 22nd.

Things seemed to be picking up a bit in the run in to Christmas but not by a huge amount. Price rises, exchange rates and recession in Europe must be all playing a role. The resort I was staying at (midrange) was basically empty for quite a while (this place is usually well occupied) and same applied to other places my friends were staying at.

Not looking promising.

Did anyone seriously expect Mr Cameron to sign up to an agreement to implement a Tobin tax that will:

a. be 80-85% derived from the City of London given its position as a leading financial centre.

b. not globally co-ordinated so that places like New York, Singapore and Hong Kong which are not subject to such a tax flourish at the UK's expense.

I'm sure the other Eurozone leaders fancy the idea of the UK bailing them out by the back door but thankfully Mr Cameron isn't that stupid. Aside from the fact his own MP's would force him out of his job in no time at all.

No co-incidence that Norway and Switzerland are two of the smartest and richest countries in Europe by never getting involved in EU membership. Are they any "less" European??

I was looking to book a flight from LHR to Samui via Bangkok a few weeks agoTravelling in last week of November and return just b4 Christmas.

Thai Airways came up on the internet search engines with very attractive prices (approx £560 return) and the prices were consistently confirmed as "live". Didn't really want to fly in one of their old 747's but was willing to give it a shot at that price.  Yet over the course of 2 or 3 days, whenever I tried to make the booking online it always failed. Which made me suspect the tickets/prices didn't exist at all.

Gave up on that and am back to using EVA & Bangkok Airways, both of whom have much newer aircraft and better connection times. Cost £150 more but worth it.

Now my main concern is whether Swampy will actually be open.....
