It seems that International school Teachers do many of the same things as they do in the UK.
Which is another good reason for those intending to teach at the better int. schools to get home country teaching experience as well as a PGCE or its equivalent.  If you can hack teaching in a UK school for 2-3 years, you should be fine in an int.school.   It would be a huge shock to the system for TEFL teachers though.

When a TEFL teacher sends their CV into a real international school it gets filed straight in the bin without even being looked at. They won't even get their foot into the door so your point about it being a shock to them is totally irrelevent.

I don't think being a PGCE qualified teacher means you are less likely to be a drunk than a TEFL qualified teacher (I've met a few of each who were borderline alcoholics and only here for cheap beer and girls) but I do agree that comparing an EP school to a fully fledged international school is like apples and oranges.

I will agree in some ways that your qualifications and where you teach does not mean that you will be less likely to be an alchoholic, but generally, dare I say in the vast majority of cases, western qualified teachers that hold home country certification are by their very nature more professional than their TEFL counterparts.

It is a vocation that they have chosen and studied hard to get in to. They have also met the professional standards required by the GTC. It is a career, and they are less likely to blow it than a TEFL teacher who is just looking to extend there stay abroad. Remember that a international school teacher who decides to return to the UK will very likely continue in the profession and therefore needs good references, can the same be said for a TEFLer?

Please don't think I am tarring all TEFL teachers with the same brush here, there are some excellent practitioners out there, but your comparison of apples and oranges for EP schools and proper international schools also applies to the staff within them.

I think her powers of concentration are pretty much stretched to their limits after she has chosen her nail polish colour.

The difference people who are staying here long term vs people who come  here for work and pleasure is that travelers have a more legitimate  reason for being here than. They are hear for work, and/or pleasure and  have enough quality of experience to do what is necessary to thrive in  whatever they endeavor when in Asia. You're reason for being here is  nine times out of ten, marriage. This goes out to the relatively small  group of middle aged, (life-spent in frivolity), failed once-family men  whom could not deal with the reality of their actual lives, so they seek  redemption in marrying a Thai, and/or escaping to a place where they  have no history. Yes, indeed you will make it one of your top priorities  to be a good-boy, and wholesome as you can from here on out. For the  rest of us, we are still creating our reality by seeking any means  possible to enrich our life experiences. Enrich individuals have a  positive impact on not just those immediately around them, but on  societies as a whole. You aren't positively influencing anyone's lives  except the small group of (mostly elder men) who now call this place  home/refuge from the past. The only comments admin deletes as "off  topic" are the ones they cant accept.

I think that 42 days is over the top before they stick you in the slammer, it should be more like 10 days without a very good reason.

Just ask a Thai electrician what ohms law  is and they probably ask Khun Ohm who?

Where is the tumbleweed emoticon when you want it.

And when did ohms law really help any electrician. Put most electricians on more than a light switch and there completely lost.

If they closed, the employees would be gainfully employed in other areas of the growing service and manufacturing sectors and the buildings re-rented to more socially useful business.

Isn't it time for all foreigners who sponsor a Thai citizen with a business to just withdraw their investments and send their employees back to the rice fields where they come from to go earn again 50 Baht a day with hard labour.

It may come as a surprise to many who spend most of their time drinking in the ticky-tacky bars of soi Bua Khow that these businesses add little to the over all Thai economy. So go ahead and withdraw you "sponsorship" and the only looser will be you and your dodgy "business" visas.

So you mean that those ticky tacky bars don't have thai citizens employed which earn a salary they could not earn in their hometown?Do you mean that the don't order their goods from Thai business people?
Do you mean they don't rent from and some times pay silly key moneys to Thai people?

All the rinky-dink bars, beer-bars, and other hang-outs operated by ferengs in Pattaya and the other tourist areas of Thailand could close tomorrow and the Thai economy would not miss a beat. People who spend their time in these places or are somehow connected to them get a warped sense of their importance to the overall economy (because they never get out of this environment and see the real Thai economy). If they closed, the employees would be gainfully employed in other areas of the growing service and manufacturing sectors and the buildings re-rented to more socially useful business.
