Wonderful news from India at last.
Many years ago I had the pleasure of seeing one of these magnificent beasts up close in Ranthanbore National Park in Maharashtra, it was an experience that I shall never forget.
I only hope that the Indian action is followed by Africa, where wildlife poaching is rampant. As for the poachers, I have no sympathy for them whatsoever, let's reinvent that old Wild West slogan, "The only good poacher is a dead one!"

Well said, Marshbags!
I use the Co-op Bank too, and my last Swift transfer to Bangkok Bank was here in 2 days. Very pleased with their service. Pity more people don't ditch the big banks and go for quality instead.

Rayong isn't high end. It is oil refineries and factories. Grunt labor. Lots of it. Union and highly paid hourly workers. Chevron, Ford and such. Steel fabrication. Good basic industry. It is big name industry, taxed and the backbone of the Thai government. The little industry follows for parts and products that support the big names. Thailand is doing great. Take a trip to the industrial Eastern Seaboard. Money, everywhere new home construction rampant. All Thai people. No tourists here.
Which is why your glowing gloating has got nothing at all to do with the subject under discussion, namely TOURISM.

A great job of toadying to TAT, Nisa. But just look at your own figures for arrivals at Swampy - from 2006 to 2010 there was no increase at all, in fact every year of the coup/Abhisit era arrivals at Swampy actualy fell! Yet the miracle TAT tourist numbers for that period showed a 2million increase, did they all walk across the border, or swim here?
Sorry, but I honestly don't believe that anyone (apart from you!) takes these announcements from TAT with anything other than a pinch of salt!

It's much better here than Iran! Doesn't mean gay activists don't have work to do here though. Such as those textbooks mentioned in the OP. That's the kind of thing that could be changed. But for that, you do need Thai gay activists. Westerners preaching there aren't things to work on here -- NOT HELPFUL. That attitude reminds me a bit of the old western colonial romanticization of "naive" natives of the tropics.
Funny, at one point I would have thought gay Thais fighting for better treatment in their society could expect overwhelming, enthusiastic support from gay foreigners with a connection to Thailand. I was so wrong!

There you go again, JT, with your very own "gay fanaticism". To say that "gay Thais fighting for better treatmant in their society don't get the overwhelming , enthusiastic support from gay foreigners" just bcause we don't all share you views on gay marraige is utter nonsense. I cannot believe that a move to clean-up the text books, etc., would not receive our overwhelming support, but insisting that Thailand embraces gay marraige looks a little bit like your despised Western colonial arrogance to me.
Yes, Peter Tatchell, indeed. In my view he did more to damage the cause of gay acceptance and equality in the U.K. that any homophobe ever did.
