In Topic: Thai Residency Applications Being Approved

As stated before, I have recently gone through the naturalization process with exactly zero mention of my original nationality made by any Thai official anywhere along the way.

That's very interesting. Did you apply before the 2010 change mentioned in post #71, which says you have to sign a letter stating you will renounce your former nationality when your Thai nationality is granted?

As a 2006 PR applicant, with an application maybe lost forever in the world of Thai bureaucracy, and also married to a Thai, I was very interested in this possible route to citizenship. At least until I read the requirement to sign this letter. Much as I doubt that I will ever return full time to the UK, I still don't want to close of that option forever.

I believe a document I received today in Thai by registerd letter from immigration which I have to sign indicates that my residency application from 2006 is now on full steam ahead. Any one else received similar.

I am from 2007 batch and have not received any such letter so far....Will it affect my status in anyway if if don't get such letter? I want the PR.
If someone knows the phone number of the department please pass on so I can call them.

Sorry, no idea what the number is, but I would certainly follow it up. It you can get up to CW in person, you could fill it in and return it at the same time. However, there is a section on the bottom for details of wife/gf/lawyer etc. who translated it for you, so you would need to go with them, I'd guess.

You should do it pretty quickly also, as mine was dated nearly 2 weeks ago, and you only get 30 days to reply.

Good luck.

Sadly for us long term PR applicants it would seem that the letter mentioned by a few members last week isn't "the" letter that we are all waiting for. According to my lawyer, due to the long delay a few applicants have dropped out and immigration is simply seeking confirmation from those in the queue as to whether they wish to keep waiting.

Not very encouraging really. On a more positive note he (my lawyer) did say that the interior ministry is making noises about starting to clear the backlog in the next month or two. Yes I know, we've all heard that several times before. Oh well......

Indeed it isn't.

Yesterday I made the joyful trip to CW to see my long-term friends in the PR department and get my latest 6 months extension.

As I hadn't received 'the letter' yet, over tea, biscuits and small talk they very helpfully printed me out a new copy.

It is as 'Dork' says, just an 'indication of wanting to continue waiting' letter. However, the lady did say the pending applications are going to be signed 'this year'. Maybe the minister wants to save a few signatures.....

Who knows. But this is the first time in several trips they have been in the least bit positive.

The other part of the news is that you seem to have to return the completed letter in person, according to my missus' translation. Back there again tomorrow, then.

Well, maybe.

Unfortunately the early part of each year following the acceptance of applications since I applied in 2006 has always been like this. A rush of activity for new applicants, only to slip into total nothingness once the initial processing has been completed.

Still, I will live in  hope, at least until I die of old age waiting.....

Hi stbkk,

Don't suppose it will make you feel any better but we are not the worst off. I am also a 2006er and have just returned from Chaengwattana for the 6 monthly thing. The Salawat that signs it off mentioned out of the blue that of the total backlog of 990 applications awaiting signature by the Interior Minister, there are a handful from 2005. Actually my lawyer told me that a few years ago but I thought at the time he must be mistaken.

I didn't bother asking the officers whether they expected any imminent movement.

I'm only half joking when I say that it isn't possible for the whole lot to be cleared in one go. I have in the past had to sign 1-200 documents at once and my hand almost stopped working. But 990.......

That's the first I've heard about that personally. I can only assume they must have had some paperwork issue that took a while to sort out, and suddenly the trap door slammed shut, locking them out as well.

I also agree with you that I doubt if they'll all be signed in one go. Maybe (if we are VERY lucky) just a few weeks in between each batch?
