I used the new machines last month,at heathrow, very easy, one member of staff for about 3 machines, just to show you how to enter your passport, much quicker than the manual check.

Last month I took a taxi from the airport to our condo, usual price 200bht,this time the chargs 350bht,and this was on the meter. I queried
this with the driver, who informed me that there had been an increase on all taxi rates, which I  thought was  BS. I decided not to argue, but instead took the details of the taxi. My wife then telephoned the taxi system help line, to explain the problem. They took all details and promised to return our call after investigating.  Forward 3 weeks,no telephone call, so my wife rang them again to ask what had happened, they then told her they had no record of her call.So much for the so called help line, TYPICAL THAILAND.

The OP's story reminds me of a few lefty-hippy-girls in my college at uni... they did everything possible to mark themselves out as different and then moaned that they were not treated the same as everyone else...  Thailand is known to be one of the easiest countries for ex-pats to settle in (largely due to the Thai people's tolerance of foreigners) and from the short time I have been here I can see why... if the OP feels uncomfortable here I think she should consider moving to Camden in London where she can meet many like-minded individuals

Again I quote- and from the short time I have been here. unquote

When you have been here a little longer you may still think the same, but by then you may come to realise that some Thais are out and out
racist, not always to your face, but still racist, it's unofficial thai policy from the hi-so down, they want to depict us as the bogyman.Helps to keep the status quo.

I think the era of Safe thailand is over now ...dangerous roads , tourists attack , robery etc ..etc ... the list is long !! I remember 20 years ago was safe to walk anywhere anytime ..now it seems its not ..tourists must be careful.
It's low season FFS.... it's not any more dangerous. Non-locals have been laid off from the hospitality business and chose to augment their 'tropical' lifestyles rather than go home and plant rice. Similarly, there's less 'good news' stories for the hacks to pursue so crime, particularly crime against foreigners suddenly increases to fill copy space.

Well I don't know about the rest of Thailand, but here in Krabi it is definitely not low season yet.

I really doubt that an effective ASEAN will happen for a long, long time to come and Thailand will still drag its feet on far too many issues to make it worthwhile taking Thai citizenship.
Most corporate working expats in Singapore and Malaysia will keep going the the way they are . . . while Thailand stagnates

There certainly are a lot of birthing pains to the Asean community but we in Europe should remember that we had to endure WW2 before the idea of the European Community was born.

We have had a lifetime of peace in Europe, if that is all the EC has achieved then I would suggest it has been a resounding success and long may it continue.

I hope the Asean countries eventually manage to get the same level of cooperation going.  One major problem preventing that coming to fruition though is the astounding level of Asian on Asian racism.

Yes, the EC has many faults, but one success is that it has stopped wars between the main european countries, lets hope that the
nationalism that is now sprouting up in certain areas does not lead to the return of narrow minded tribes, or has it already?
