You go to the border with both old and new passport and show them to immirgation and ask to be stamped out on the new passport. Then you enter the other country with the new paspsort and apply for a new visa for Thailand on that one and return to Thailand.

Visas are never transfered, only permisisons to stay. When not on an extension of stay they will do this at the border.

Visas are never transferred, I agree,  and I know it's not applicable in the OP's case, but just in case some others may not be aware, getting a new passport and having the old passport cancelled does not cancel any current visa that is still valid. My wife has a still valid business visa ( USA ) with 3 or 4 years to run in her cancelled passport and can still use that visa if and when required.

That's very handy to know if it is applicable in Thailand too

Thanks for the clarification Mario2008, I was just really worried that the old/cancelled passport would pose a problem for a difficult immigration official! :)

Do you mean you will be using a multi entry non immigrant visa for a new 90 day entry?  If so you will have to show both passports to obtain as visas are never transferred from one passport to another.

My visa expires on the 11th, my new passport should arrive by then, but I will have to leave the country immediately, before my visa expires, meaning I may not have time to transfer my old expiring visa into my new passport;

Passport is full
Visa in full passport expires on June 11th
New passport should arrive before June 11th
New passport won't have a visa in it

my current non imm 'O' expires on the 11th June, my old passport is full, my new passport will (hopefully) arrive around the 11th and then I will be leaving the country to obtain a new non imm 'O' so both passport and visa will be expired, I will be leaving Thailand before the visa expires but the passport will be expired too.
