#5334703 How Did Thaivisa Help You?.......

Posted cdnvic on 2012-05-27 01:25:04

I'm getting very tired of people who keep coming into positive threads to moan and whine, or take pot shots at others. If you want to be miserable, log off and be miserable by yourself, and let those who want to enjoy their time here do so.

Orgasmic.

I was luck enough to be taken here the other night. And I didn't pay!Posted Image

Just outside Fishermans, on the left heading towards Bangrak, just before the hill.

The place isn't really visible from the road, and is right on the beach – at the very end of the bay, so no-one wanders by trying to flog you anything. You walk over a little bridge and then enter the open restaurant. (There is a covered area above the kitchens as well, and a small dining sala.) Great lighting, usually a good breeze, lots of trees and the sea of course. And plenty of room; you aren't really aware of other diners. Perfect for that special dinner. Certainly romantic.

It is the kind of place where you are spoken to in excellent english, with kapom instead of khrap. And with cold towels and a small appetiser (free) as you look through the menu. (Take reading glasses, to use with their little torches.Posted Image)

A great Euro/Thai menu. Duck, steak, fish etc alongside traditional Thai. Fusion is what it is called, I am told.Posted Image  Mains around the THB 500 mark, so with a glass of wine (house, Shiraz I think, none of this Mont Clair khrap) at THB 180, and a starter/dessert, you are looking at a bill of 1,000 per head easily. (Service charge is extra.) Many of the mains come with extras not advertised; small plates of roasted swede (I think) and a stuffed tomato, for example. The duck I had was very tasty.

On a previous occasion I ate Thai food, which appears pricey, but for example, the shrimp fried rice had the largest and tastiest shrimps I have ever seen on Samui.Posted Image  All the food is beautifully presented. Excellent service. And the boss and chef pop over to double check – a nice touchPosted Image

In the high season and with great weather, probably best to make a reservation – especially if you want one of the half dozen seaside tables.

Most of the reviews/recommendations I've read both in this thread and last year's have been focused on the north end of the island, but there is life beyond south Lamai, and some restaurants worth going off the beaten track for.  Today myself and the missus had lunch at Fisherman's Outlet on the coast road between the Orchid Resort and Laem Set Inn/Kamalaya.  Although it's on the road, the traffic is very light.

Fisherman's Outlet is covered open air surrounded by a garden filled with orchids.  The staff are very friendly and speak reasonable English.  There are usually three daily specials - fish and chips (150B); barracuda on a hot plate with veg and veg rice (250B) and a seafood hot plate (300B).  The latter has some nice fish and prawns, but is spoiled by having overcooked squid.  The barracuda is excellent.  Fish and chips we've yet to try.

A small bottle of Singha is 60B, Tiger is 70B and the wine list looks good with reasonable prices.

Today, we started with prawn cakes (four large patties for 100B) which were tasty but not the best we've eaten.  The gaeng kieow waan gai  (120B) was creamy heaven, filled with tender chicken, cauliflower, two kinds of eggplant, green beans, three colours of capsicum and of course Samui's 'national' vegetable, carrot .   The garden fresh pad pak bung fai daeng we had previously was not available, so we had a plate of pad pak kanaa nam man hawy (Chinese kale in oyster sauce).  The sauce had whole cooked garlic cloves and shitake mushrooms.  Nice enough, but the pak bung is the one to go for.

The service was very good, unsurprising as we were the only customers there, and the food arrived within ten minutes of ordering.  The bill including a young coconut and a small Tiger came to 510B.

There are numerous western dishes available, from sandwiches to pizza, but we haven't tried these and are unlikely to.  There are also four set menus each with four Thai dishes for 350B a set.  If the quality of the set menu dishes is as good as the green curry we had today, that looks to be good value.

Directions:  After the 90 degree right hand bend at Hua Thanon, take the 4170 towards the tiger zoo/butterfly garden.  After about two kms, turn left towards the Orchid Resort (there's a FamilyMart on the opposite corner), take the turn right before the Orchid and drive towards Kamalaya for about 1 km.  Fisherman's Outlet is on the right.

Posted glbv on 2012-05-11 20:29:31

zzaa09 im confused why you would be so active (5000+ posts) on a Thai expat forum where expats generally talk about things like this. Then complain that expats are using well... expatty things. Almost as if you wish to brag that you are the most Thai of the white guys. Again no offense just something that has become more and more common on these forums, self hateing white people.

Its 100f+ out if your not using aircon your poor or mad. Theres no Thai that will say 38c nah thats cold better get my parka.

#5278972 Move To Samui?

Posted Tropicalevo on 2012-05-07 00:08:18

That is one way to look at it 'insert'. Another way is to  ........

.......drop out of the rat race. Find a quiet location with some of the best views in the world. Enjoy hot to warm weather for 350 days of the year (the other 15 are cool days). Enjoy sunshine and calm seas for 10 months of the year.

Fabulous beaches, warm sea, great food (compared to most places in the UK) cold beer and lovely people that smile at you when you say hello.

A shxtty day here is still far better than an average day in lots of other places. It depends on your outlook to life. Positive outlook, positive life. I earn a fraction of the money that I did in the real world, but Disneyland still looks good when it looks like tropical beaches, warm weather and fabulous views.

I worked for 34 years, eventually enjoying top hotels, flying to different places every week, living in a new country every two/three years, and having a great time eating, drinking and travelling. I met some great people and really enjoyed my job.

I do not miss one single aspect of it now that I have stopped on Samui. (Except maybe a bit more money? Posted Image )

Every morning I wake up and look at a great view and know that today I will meet and talk to some really nice folks. I will have a great meal and a couple of beers. Perfect. I have been on 'holiday' on samui for 12 years now. It's still PDG. Posted Image

#5266619 Brit Billionaire's Son Vanishes On Samui – Reward Offered

Posted Darkskin on 2012-05-01 23:43:42

Hi all of you I am the poor/bar girl/Muslim girl/essarn girl oh I could go on and on.  Thank you to those of you whom spoke good of me.  I did not kidnap my future stepson, I am not trying to steal any body's money as I have enough of my own.  The house you laughed at if I was the future wife of a billionaire was actually not my house but a coffee shop I met the reporter in.   My skin is dark as I work outdoors alot, but i still cannot understand why anybody living in Samui and using this forum could be racist towards me.  All of you were informed of my stepsons disappearance after he was found so please do not treat this site as your news.  This was a serious incident with Marcus and this site without my permission changed wording and turned it into what seems like a joke to all. Thank you for taking the time to read this thread and thank you to those of you who said kind words for Marcus and I.
Marcus is looking forward to returning to his family this week.

#5248197 Anzac Day Memorial Service

Posted Tomtomtom69 on 2012-04-25 11:28:47

I'm not sure how many Anzac Day services there are in Thailand, but possibly the only one that is an official commemoration is held every year at Hellfire Pass (Chong Khao Kad) in Kanchanaburi province, about 100km west of Kanchanaburi on the road to the Three Pagodas Pass border with Myanmar. The second part of the commemoration takes place at the Commonwealth War Graves Cemetary in Kanchanaburi city later on the same morning (11am). The dawn service begins around 5.15am and is followed by a so-called "gunfire breakfast" which consists of a coffee with a shot of whiskey.

The Australian-Thai Chamber of Commerce (AustCham) who I used to work for organises the event and they do it very well. It's a very meaningful event, which starts on the 24th in the morning with a trip that starts in Bangkok and heads over to a local school not far from Hellfire Pass, where the Chamber organises some events, provides gifts and organises a lunch. This is followed by checking-in to a local hotel, then free at leisure until dinner. On the morning of the 25th, the bus takes visitors and those taking part in the Anzac Day dawn service to the pass, a few km away. After the end of the event and the breakfast mentioned above, visitors will have breakfast at their hotel followed by the journey to the War Graves Cemetary for the Commemoration Ceremony there. Lunch is held near the Bridge over the River Kwai followed by return to Bangkok.

I think it is well worth attending this ceremony and for those interested, they should contact the Australian-Thai Chamber of Commerce should they wish to attend next year's service.

Memorial to what?? A long past war of British aggression against Turkey. Australian and New Zealanders fighting for a foreign power in a foreign country far from their home. As a New Zealander I am ashamed by what we did
seriously, you need to check the things for which you should be ashamed of. This post should be one of them, not the fact that your forefathers died for what they and their country believed in.
