The problem with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people's money.

The problem with capitalism is that it allows investment bankers to turn other people's money into global financial crises.

Once again,

Here is the danger of losing your temper in Thailand.

Now this family is being intimidated. All because this man created a confrontation. It's stupidity on his part. Who, with any knowledge of Thailand, would seriously consider causing a confrontation over a bunch of balloons?

Yes the assault was over the top, but let it be a lesson to everybody.

Don't fight in Thailand, don't be aggressive in Thailand, don't look for confrontation.

You will pay a price like you cannot believe, just as this guy has done.

Like the last line just because from a social perspecitive it underscores the disappointing levels of protection minority groups can expect in Thailand. You wouldn't think we were living in the 21st Century would you?
This whole saga has turned into a  minor race war with the dividing lines being drawn on the basis of skin colour and ethnicity, as opposed to right and wrong, and TV news coverage has passively encouraged this.
This event and subsequent media coverage of it just makes me pity Thailand and Thai people so much more.

Perhaps he would rather have some more extra Judicial killings, and save the expense of an appeal?

This is getting more and more like Captain Blackadder's trial every day!

love this guy. he knows this country is a ****hole but he still fights with his life on the line (no way he doesnt get shot soon) for the animals who did not chose to be living with thais.

How do you donate to his sanctuary? when people ask me for a good place to donate money, that should be perfect as none of the $ goes toward people

Just because the wildlife sanctuaries is owned by Farang, it does not automatically be respected, nor immune from raids.

Farang are not GODS. There are bad Farang as well. Some deal with drug, some underage protitution, some traffic humans, set up casio, some sell animal parts, etc.

And don't change the subject.
Why Wiek had no papers for more than 100 of the 450 animals at his centre?

Edwin is a good and well respected man doing something that Thai's should be doing themselves, sadly most Thai's don't give a dam_n. As for the papers from what I have seen on numerous blogs and videos on the raids, the officials turned up and demanded papers instantly and did not permit them even an hour to try to locate all the paperwork. This is just about retribution nothing else.
This is a very Thai problem that the Thai people should be dealing with, why is it left to a farang to point out problems like this.

When Phuket police raid your car, do they demanded papers instantly and did not permit them even an hour to try to locate all the paperwork?
When Pattaya police raid your bar, do they demanded papers instantly and did not permit them even an hour to try to locate all the paperwork?
When Patpong police raid your bra, do they demanded papers instantly and did not permit them even an hour to try to locate all the paperwork?

Calm down mate, Firstly I don't not own a bar or a car, (i do not own a bra either), I avoid sh@t holes like Pattaya and Patpong like the plague, as I do the wonderful Thai police.
Yes there are plenty of undesirable farangs in Thailand (as there are plenty of undesirable Thais) but we are supposed to be talking elephants here. Try reading some of the many articles out there on this. I know Edwin, not well, but I do know his center is one of the best in Thailand and this is purely retribution for him being brave enough to speak out on an issue that everyone else was too scared to talk about. He knew from previous experience what would likely happen when he spoke out but still went ahead. That takes balls.
Don't blame the messenger?

What's interesting is that the DNP has in the past brought sick, injured and unwanted animals to Wildlife Friend's Rescue Centre to be looked after.  Now they are requesting papers for some of them and taking them back. Presumably for many animals, the application for registration is waiting on someone's desk in the DNP.  It would be good if we could see the condition of the facilities that the DNP has put the animals into, since lack of funds to pay for food and inadequate shelter in their wildlife captive breeding facilities was the original reason they gave them to Edwin to look after.  This escapade has failed to answer the critical questions relating to elephants and their protection in Thailand.  It would good if the journalist can now approach senior DNP people with knowledge of wildlife (perhaps the Wildlife Division Director) to ask about the official policy on elephant trade and trafficking, and what the Thailand government is actually doing on the ground to implement the policy.

I think foreigners should stop trying to be the conscience of Thailand.  Nothing will ever get done without the support of Thais.   NGOs similar to Mr. Wiek's will continue to be targeted and destroyed if they obstruct a source of money for the corrupt elite.  Thais are not ignorant.  It is not about saving face.  Acquiring wealth is just far more important than saving people or animals or honesty or Buddhism.  Mr Wiek did have the animals legally.

I thouht the UDD was FOR democracy and AGAINST dictatorship.  Seems they are for dictatorship.  From Wiki:

A dictatorship is defined as an autocratic form of government in which the government is ruled by an individual, the dictator. It has three possible meanings that are used.
  • A government controlled by one person, or a small group of people. In this form of government the power rests entirely on the person or group of people, and can be obtained by force or by inheritance. The dictator(s) may also take away much of its peoples' freedom.
  • In contemporary usage, dictatorship refers to an autocratic form of absolute rule by leadership unrestricted by law, constitutions, or other social and political factors within the state.
In the 20th century and early 21st century hereditary dictatorship remained a relatively common phenomenon.
For some scholars, a dictatorship is a form of government that has the power to govern without consent of those being governed (similar to authoritarianism), while totalitarianism describes a state that regulates nearly every aspect of public and private behavior of the people. In other words, dictatorship concerns the source of the governing power (where the power comes from) and totalitarianism concerns the scope of the governing power (what is the government).
In this sense, dictatorship (government without people's consent) is a contrast to democracy (government whose power comes from people) and totalitarianism (government controls every aspect of people's life) opposes pluralism (government allows multiple lifestyles and opinions).
Other scholars stress the omnipotence of the State (with its consequent suspension of rights) as the key element of a dictatorship and argue that such concentration of power can be legitimate or not depending on the circumstances, objectives and methods employed.[1]

I hope the police/courts make an example of these poachers that might deter a future sensless killing of wild elephants.

You can be sure they will show case it, as DAMAGE CONTROL !!

Nab a couple as fall guys and then pretend that it is all under control, whilst there is undeniable corruption in very poweful places where a lot of money is being made, not so much on the ivory market, but very BIG money changing hands for young elephants for the entertainment of dumb tourists.

READ THIS ... CAREFULLY

The slaughter of family groups of elephants in Thailand and neighbouring countries is being funded by tourists. Not until there is global awareness, outrage expressed, and elephant entertainment boycotted, will this stop. I am closely connected to those "on the ground".

Relative to demand, there is a shortage of elephant calves born in captivity, for use in the various tourist entertainment activities. For those available, the treatment is horrid enough, with brutalisation - to break their spirits - but to slaughter a family group simply to get their filthy hands on the calf is what most of the poaching is about. Ivory is just a bonus, and official statements about ivory are a decoy, a distraction from the bigger issue.

Just where is the proof to this story that tourist dollars are supporting the killing of herds for calves. The elephant parks I personally know of have a very successful breeding program with a new calve birthed just 7 days ago at one of the parks. This story you are helping spread around is just negative propaganda that does not help the problem of domesticated elephants in Thailand. Get your facts right my friend. Don't follow the ban of critics that are all acting like sheep. Have you ever been to these elephant camps and seen for yourself what an important role they play in helping the elephants.

@ "Get your facts right my friend."
It is not about those parks. There is a dark side, with big money involved.
You need to do some research. You can start here www.wfft.org
However, if you find comfort in denial, so be it.

Interesting to note that this topic has so few contributors. Whereas some hyped up, tabloid-style article about tuktuks, jet skis, bar girls or a brawl, and it will run to pages in an instant.

This is insane. We all know corruption is very common here, but when it comes to killing animals for some miserable money this makes me sick. As when DNP and the rest go to raid WFFT and confiscate animals that have all of the legal permits in retaliation for these people outspoking about officials, politicians and wealthy people involved. They should just release the names of those bastards, I guess they cannot hurt them anymore as they have been raided for 5 consecutive days and most of the animals taken away (they can do from outside the kingdom or even anonymously on the internet)

A total senseless killing. It would be nice to see the orchestrators nabbed as well. Well that takes care of the rumors that the elephants are murdered for their calves to be used in elephant camps.

Well, all the dead elephants found in Keng Krachan around New Year still had their tusks. After the raid by the corrupt DNP on several wildlife sanctuaries last week, some very influential Thais, some connected to the royal household, intervened and condemned the DNP openly. Bottom line, this article is a hoax, a spin and the two guys on the picture are just 'fall guys'....

A new cafe called Roast has recently opened in SeenSpace on Thonglor Soi 13. They have two huge Geisen drum roasters and roast fresh on the premises a couple of times a week. Excellent coffee, and available as beans to take away. Not quite as good as Doi Chaang but better than most other brands. Not cheap. Hillkoff has good beans for a decent price if you can find it. D'Oro too. I found both at the gourmet grocery in Paragon near the cineplex.

Interesting to hear you say that you feel the 'Roast' coffee isn't as good as Doi Chaang. I really like what Roast do and have never been too keen on Doi Chaang and having tried a few of thier roasts, gave up on them. I generally drink espressos or espresso based coffee and found the Doi Chaang roasts I tried either a bit bland or over roasted and extrememly bitter.
Which of the Doi Chaang range do you prefer? I'd like to use Doi Chaang, but have never found a coffee I like from them.

Sorry I've taken so long to respond, just saw this post today.

I like Doi Chaang's Single Origin Peaberry, delicious. There are some other signature roasts I also like, that I've only seen for sale in Chiang Mai. Their kiosk at Phrom Phong BTS station in Bangkok sells very nice Arabica beans at a good price.

To me Roast is pretty ordinary, compared to Soi Chaang I view it as the difference between a passionate amateur with limited knowledge about roasting (the roasters arrived at Roast weeks *after* the cafe opened), and the accomplished pros at Doi Chaang. .

Of course if you prefer Roast, nothing wrong with that. I find Doi Chaang's acidity, body and flavour far more balanced,

Doi Chaang has attracted international attention btw.

I ride a lot and have never witnessed anyone giving up their seat to a 12-year old let alone doing this but not providing a seat for the elderly. Certainly anything is possible and can happen but clearly we all know this is very very far from the norm ... extremely far from the norm.

I also believe the overwhelming vast majorities of Thais understand that giving up your seat to a child is a safety issue and applies to very small children or babies that are incapable of holding on safely or whose parent cannot hold on safely while holding the child.

Lastly, I have never once not seen an older person be offered a seat while on the subway. I've seen it take a moment to get the older person'a attention to let them know somebody is willing to provide them a seat but have NEVER seen somebody not give up their seat to an older person, pregnant women, monk or somebody with a baby.

There are rude and inconsiderate people in every city and nation but again, have never witnessed any of these folks in Bangkok not be offered a seat and it is almost always a young male who is the first to offer ... especially when it is an older person or pregnant women.

#5038705 Are Crumpets Available In Thailand?

Posted Gladiator on 2012-02-08 11:03:13

Thanks to theseahorse to make the suggestion of cooking the crumpets at home - That is just what I did.

Expencive or no - despite all kinds of bakery products being available in Chiang Mai, I have never seen crumpets.

If you do give this a try - really it is very simple. A couple of things. I used the Delai Smith recipe which was very easy. You can view this online. The instant yeast that I had in my house was past its sell-by date so worthwhile getting a new bag.. Ensure enough time for the yeast to start to ferment and froth in the milk and water. Also further time for the dough to rise.

Keep a close eye on the heat beneath the frying pan so that the outsides do not burn and the insides cook sufficiently. I discarded the first couple and then got less ambitios with the amount of batter tha I put into each egg cooking ring.

Good luck!
