#5287728 Seven Hurt In Bangkok Steak House Gas Explosion

Lucky it wasn't worse. These unregulated uses of gas tanks in Thailand in commercial and residential locations is a ticking bomb. Most people would be like Tony the cook from Cambodia, and they would just run or be totally ignorant that a gas leak is a hazard. There is no regulated guidance on this at all.
Even in the heavily regulated west, gas explosions in homes and commercial spaces are not that uncommon from a variety of causes.  The canisters used here do have inherent risks but so do the underground gas lines found in many western cities.  Every year, there are blasts when gas lines are ruptured by construction equipment like backhoes digging up streets.  Many deaths from CO1 also result from improperly vented gas household and water heaters.

#5180352 Getting A Mortgage In Thailand

Posted soi41 on 2012-03-31 18:13:36

Al. Your 20 year old wife doesn't work (why not ?) and you live from gambling websites. Are you seriously expecting any bank here to give you a mortgage on those grounds?
You already give your wife/gf 3 times the average income in Thailand. My feeling is, that you don't live here and are older than 25. If that is the case, leave things as they are. As a gambler you should know, when the odds are against you. Or go ahead with it (she's different), and come back in a couple of years asking for a good lawyer.

#5180067 Converting To Thai Citizenship

I don't know about the point system, nor have any idea how many points I had.  I do know of someone who had salary of over 500K baht who was rejected for reasons of Thai language deficiency -- so "money" is not the only factor as you say.

In any case, 120K is a pretty paltry financial hurdle to set (if in fact it has been set) if you ask me.

Thai citizenship is almost impossible to get for foreign men.
A few have managed it, but very rare, and you have to be paying tax on a sizable salary (or Thai ancestry).
If retired or your earnings are from overseas, impossible.

A common myth, spread on barstools throughout the Kingdom.

So tell us, as a foreign male what entitled you to Thai citizenship apart from a big salary.
What Thai income do you pay tax on (as single I assume 120k/month plus)
Come on, give us your points breakdown?

Funny that those who achieve it, are always cagey on how they got it.!

I'm not cagey at all.

I had PR for over five years on application.  Speak, read, and write Thai fluently.  Owned a condo.  Had salary of maximum 150K in previous years.  Do you consider that "huge"?  I sure don't.

So, do you know anyone who has applied and failed to get it?  Where do your beliefs about "impossibility" come from?  Everyone I know who has applied has gotten it (including those I met during the process).

#5179933 90 Day Report

Posted gennisis on 2012-03-31 15:41:40

Just to report that on Tuesday I posted my 90 day report  for renewal and it was returned with the new date slip today...Saturday.
This was the first time I had applied by post after reading advise on the forum. Obviously much more convenient that applying in person with immigration crowded these days.
So,being able to prebook my annual permission to stay...already done for November...and postal 90 day reporting, life will be so much easier.

Ummmm....you're at least 5 years behind the rest of the civilzed world. But keep talking and you may get a viable 3G network about the same time 9G is introduced!

Now just waiting for the appologists to tell me to leave if I don't like it. Glad I'm not an Irish IT instructor. 555

#5172788 Ministerial Action Urged Over Vice TV Message 'Thailand Is The World'...

If this is a competition for concentration of putas on one area, I don't think you can beat Mexico City. When I was there I wandered off into the "wrong" neighborhood and it was mind boggling, miles and miles of street walkers straight out of a Fellini movie. For me it was about as sexually appealing as a can of paint but it did make an impression. Never saw anything in Thailand to come close.

#5155217 Foreigner Assaulted At Bangkok BTS Station By Security Guard - Police Launch...

Posted CMSteve on 2012-03-22 13:47:50

From the video it looks like the foreigner just figured he was going to do what he wants...     although, I understand that he was just trying to take his child's balloons on-board, rules are rules.    Balloons haven't been allowed on the BTS for a while now.    They blocked him from using his card at the turnstiles, so he decides to use the handicap entrance.   Then the guard tries to stop him and take the balloon, and this guy goes crazy.

Unfortunately, this makes all of us foreigners look bad.    I hope that any Thai's reading this will recognize that we are not all like this, this is just one bad apple in the bunch.

Posted kaysamui on 2012-03-22 13:44:13

All I can see on this Video is, that the Farang assault the security Guard, hit him in the face, so his hat fell off, and when the second security guards appears, he get kicked by the other Farang.
imo, the Farang had not the correct ticket and didn't wanted to accept the punishment for that !
Why is it twisted against the Thai here ? it's clear visible, who assaulted who: Farang assaulted Thai !

this kind of news and comments sucks.

From what I saw of the video and read elsewhere, it's the guys own fault. He tried to do something that isn't allowed, got abusive, and got what was to be expected when you get abusive with security/police.

#5105538 Fire On 7th Floor Of FICO Building, Asoke Area: Bangkok

Posted mrtoad on 2012-03-03 17:41:16

Can't believe that afire in an office block has enabled the usual suspects to come out and bash Thailand. Pretty sure we still have fires back in the UK. My impression of firefighters in Bangkok is that they do a very good job. I'll agree that some of the wiring and power cables aren't exactly great here - but there are a lot of things back home that aren't great. Anyone read about the bloke that drowned in 3 foot of water, as the police and fire brigade looked on, because Health abd Safety rules wouldn't allow then to walk in to the pond to get the person out as they had not done a submersible certificate.
