Maybe try updating the ROM once again after clearing Dalvik?

Can you use Air KiES?

There are tons of apps for backing up contacts; media can be dragged/dropped onto a PC.

I use my phone explorer (Outlook: calendar, contacts, notes, call log, SMS, et al.), Super Backup (contacts, SMS, call log), Titanium Backup (Pro) (apps), and copy (USB cable connectivity) any media files to both my ext uSD card and my PC weekly.

there's no Dalvik in the menue

what I see is
reboot system now
apply update from external storage
wipe data/factory reset

it's ICS 4.0.3
wipe cache partition
apply update from cache
test redband fotal[FS]

It is likely that the installation process did not properly prepare the phone for the upgrade.

Maybe try turning the phone completely off, removing the battery, re-installing the battery, rebooting the phone.

If that doesn't work enter Recovery mode, wipe dalvik cache, re-boot, re-do steps above.

Enter Modes
Recovery Mode
This is how to put you Galaxy S II into Recovery Mode:
Turn off your Galaxy S II phone.
Now hold the Volume Up + Home + Power buttons of your Galaxy S2 smartphone until the Samsung logo comes up.
When you see the Samsung logo; quickly release the buttons for half a second and then hold them again.
Now your Galaxy S II will boot into its Recovery mode. Use the volume keys to navigate and the home button to make your selection.

What exactly are you backing up? There may be other solutions.

Phone rooted? Many options if so. I avoid Kies like the plague. It is buggy, when it has a Kies update, it downloads EACH file individually and takes ages, and half the time, it does not work. And sometimes, it hogs the cpu for no apparent reason.

I would avoid backing up to Google. They know enough about you already. Root the phone and have 1000 more choices for backups, roms, customization.

@ lomatopo
Thanks for the advise. It didn't fix the issue. Backup the entire phone (Contacts, media, settings etc)

@Somtamnication
How to root without 'killing' the phone?

Have you ever taken into consideration that private cars/buses/vans/taxis can carry passengers?
What's is all about? What about cell phones?
