G. Gordon Liddy once did a talk show where he held his hand over an open flame for an exceptionally long time. The astonished interviewer meekly asked; 'so..what's the trick.

Liddy icily replied; 'the trick...is not minding the pain.'

Tengoku.

Directly across the street from Mandarin Dhara Devi.

In general it's expensive...for here. High end quality, service and big pieces. they also have a 700 all you can eat buffet with sashimi etc. and an 800 Baht dinner one (2 hours)

Strangely enough they also have a desktop with free wifi at the sushi bar, so you can 'surf' while the chef carves your lunch out of the enormous blue fin on display in the kitchen window.

Tsunami is a decent place to go but the service is terrible. I go with Thais, and they don't fare any better than I do.

Dash Restaurant (soon to be named Teak House) on Moon muang Soi 1.

Marscapone cheesecake with passion-fruit drizzle. To die for.:clap2:

I'm not a shill just a huge fan. The menu and food are first class; Western, Thai, Lanna.

noblesse oblige     n 1: the obligation of those of high rank to be honorable and          generous (often used ironically)B)

My sense of propriety and respect for behavior around a wat,
is a long way from idolatry.

Alobar: I kinda understand your feelings and even your action, though frankly I have to say you do come off as bit of a self-righteous busybody (who maybe guilty of idealizing the Thais a bit)...

But are you sure you want to use noblesse oblige? I mean it sort of fits with the impression I get from your OP --  but not in a good way.

Actually one of the better places to find a good range of beer and wine this holiday weekend, is at the CM International Food Fest that is sponsored by the TAT!:whistling:

Went last night with two women for a birthday. One was French, the other Swiss. I was bowled over by the charm, friendliness, decor and mais bien sure the food of La Fourchette. The acid test were the ringers dining with me, who recognized several items on the menu that were regional and perfectly done. Additionally they serve French wines at French room temperature!;)- not tropically warm or previously frozen, as is often the case in places here. My one friend almost teared up when she saw the steak to be pink inside as she had requested. 'Oh I never see really rare before in Thailand.'

The price was more than reasonable, and I commend their effort to serve authentic and high quality food at accessible prices.

They do not take credit cards! The momentary awkwardness was parried with a friendly motion to the nearby ATM machine. I suspect it was a well worn drill.

FYI there is an original signed Tin Tin in the loo for any true Francophiles.

Served wine yesterday?
