#5341320 Farang Guy Asking For Money In Lobby Of Chiang Mai Ram

Posted Loaded on Yesterday, 09:41

I hope he has a work permit for this.

Personally, if he approaches me, I will ask where can I buy the best burger in Chiang Mai. I'm sure the following conversation will bore him so much he won't approach me again.

I live in London and every newsagent/ sweetshop has advertisements for accommodation in their shop window, so it will be the same in Cambridge. Just tell them you only need it for a month and see if you can come to an arrangement. Do not tell the landlord you are leaving the UK at the end of the month or an unsrupulous one will mess you around or even try to keep any deposit you will be required to pay.

The rent and the cost of a few household items will still leave you quids in when you compare it to the cost of a hotel in Rip Off Britain.

how do you get your 2 months deposit and 1 month rent in advance (ok,thats gone  anyway )  but renting a flat and not telling landlord your leaving
and then sneaking off  after 4 weeks sounds like you deserve everything you get

then theres utility bills to set up ,all direct debit thesedays ,and a deposit and internet if you need that (who doesnt thesedays ? )

i think a cheap guesthouse or b+b would be better than the deception  youre considering ......but each to his own

i would financially crucify tenants if they lied to me ,signed a contract and decided to bail out after 28 days ,set up bills ,and then i had to find new tenants AGAIN a month later ,have the place cleaned again ,re-organise the utility bills and make new contracts as well as advertise the room again and waste days showing it to new prospective clients

I think you will find most  landlords dont want to rent their property out on that basis  to someone back for a holiday

Its hard to go back to paying through the ass for stuff youve grown accustomed to being cheap
in dublin now,  a sandwich from the shop and a bottle of lucozade was around 10 euros
a packet of god dam_n smokes is over 10 euros

even a can of  beer from an off licence supermarket is more expensive  than a beer in a nice bar in bkk with a big screen TV and a pool table

i think people stay here too long ,and forget what good value it is ,all i hear is grumbling this or that is a couple of baht more  expensive than it was last year ......

i know people who are making a few hundred euros /pounds a week  in london and dublin and still struggling and also dont have the financial  "freedom" to go out for a beer or eat in a restaurant every weekend because its so dam_n expensive

if we need stuff in thailand ,we just go and get it , id bet half the people here dont even wash their own clothes ,have a maid or a nanny  or a cleaner or a driver and probably plenty of money for drinking and prostitutes (the essentials)  .......and yet they can complain about the injustice when the government decides to increase the price of a unit  of electricty or beer gets 1/2 thb per bottle more than it was yesterday .........Posted Image

Isn't buying pre cooked food just laziness.Very few people I would suggest don't have kitchen. Buying mashed potaoes and  casserole packs when you can cook up more than you need at home, and leave what you dont use, in the fridge for another day. Maybe a poll on who uses the fresh food markets and saves heaps of money against buying at Rimping/Tops would confirm that the take away mentality is alive and well in CM.

That same logic can be applied to every consumer good under the sun.   Do you also buy freshly cut trees to carve your own furniture?   Do you buy cotton to make your own clothes?  Both of those would would save you heaps more money than just going to the store and buying pre-made items.  Does that mean you're just lazy?

Its really about convenience, I guess..   Just as you probably lack the time and the skills necessary to convert raw cotton to thread, weave it to cloth and then stitch your own clothes, the same concept applies to other people when it comes to preparing food.

Some of us are not old retirees, with nothing better to do that waste our time cooking elaborate dinners while we wait to die.   Some of us have full time jobs where we put in 60, 80 hours a week and/ or don't know how to cook. Sure I could squander what precious little free time I have left over in the week to try to prepare a casserole.   But I'd much rather drop a little coin on a pre-made one and be able to dedicate my remaining free time to more meaningful pursuits.

-Mestizo
"...........wait to die."  Come on, that's a bit strong. I'm a retiree and I don't have enough hours in the day to do all the things I want to do.

Yes; the post reeks of arrogance

#5320475 Pound Hits 50, How Long Will The Trend Last?

I personally think that the baht will fall and the pound will rise back to maybe 60, but it'll take a couple of years, and the end of QE and low interest rates in the UK to do it.

i.e. The baht will struggle this year because of a hangover of issues after the flooding last year. (I don't know how much Thailand's exports will recover on the hard disk and car components side of things.) Add in that the government appears to be in line to run a deficit, rather than the recent surpluses, and the last few years of baht strength appears to be coming to an end.

Sterling on the other hand got hammered in 2008, but when it starts to look like it will recover (t's technically in a double-dip recession now). i.e. The pound is probably going nowhere until the markets think it's looking better and that QE is behind us and that interest rates are likely to rise. (If only because the way the Bank of England decided to do QE, where they've printed money to buy bonds, they need to sell the bonds back into the market once they see it's done, and then effectively burn the money they printed by removing that money from the money supply.)

Recovery will, in this anti-QE that will follow it, result in a sterling rise. - but this is probably 2-3 years away. However, how quickly the markets will price that in will depend on when they think that the recovery will happen. (and how much they trust the BofE to follow through on the sale of the bonds and retiring of the subsequent cash).
I'll just try and point out the errors.

For a sovereign developing nation running a small budget deficit is not negative at all, especially if the money is being spent on infrastructure. A budget surplus, on the other hand, means that it is taxing its people too much and withdrawing money from the general economy, this would be economically very bad. The only economies that should be running surplus budgets are the big commodity exporters, particularly oil, which have given rise to huge sovereign wealth funds.

Otherwise you have to answer the question, "why am I being taxed so much and allowing the country to put the extra money in some sort of savings account (for what purpose), when I could be spending/saving it myself?"

QE can never, ever be reversed. It has monetised the government debt and driven interest rates down to zero. It will be VERY hard to get back off the floor in the UK.

Who on earth is going to buy the bonds in addition to all the new bonds that the UK government needs to issue to fund its continually increasing level of expenditure? It would collapse the UK bond market, sending pension schemes utterly insolvent and force banks to ask for more bailouts, as the bonds they hold loose value.

Zero interest and QE are here to stay. It's the Japanese disease times roughly 5, and they have been at it for 20 years with no end in sight.

But you have missed the two major issues.

1. The biggest UK problem is not the UK public debt. Merv has that all in hand. The biggest problem is the humongous private sector debt hanging over the UK. The UK population simply cannot take anymore debt on board to keep the economy humming. It is the worst in the world.

2. The UK's biggest trading partner is the EU. I think that says it all.

I could carry on, but I'll finish by saying that the UK is in a deflationary spiral and the economy is going to bump along the bottom for eternity. Japan without the savings culture.

Oh yes, the politicians will give you positive noises.

The current one is

"Once Greece has been sorted out, one way or the other, then things will get better".

But they won't.

Bigger and nastier cans of worms are coming up very soon.

#5297134 What Do You Do In Your Spare Time?

Posted ozzieovaseas on 2012-05-13 16:08:52

IMO, A good way to counteract boredom is not to think in terms of...err what am i gonna do today..but think along the lines of " i have so many choices of things to do today, how can i choose"

For me this attitude rings true. One thing is for sure, living here allows one to do many things that you wouldnt consider back home due to the extortionate price of things.

As i don't work here, my family and friends back home are always asking "but what do you do all day?"
I find this hard to answer as i really dont go out of my way to think of things to do, yet there is always something.

A few things i can think of at the moment that maybe others havent mentioned:

-Get on a random city bus and see where it goes. Explore the area for interesting stuff and use the same bus to get back home
-Learn a musical instrument. Guitars are cheap and compact and you can learn all you want on the net
-Movies one day a week. Usually the cheap charlie wednesday, at 80 baht you can go back to back movies if you wanted
-Read up on reviews of restaurants and have one day per week seeking out an upmarket meal
-Chinatown and Khaosan
-Day trips of museum, art gallery or temple, although some of these can get tiring after a while
-Explore the river boat system, you might end up at khao san road, which might be a good or bad thing
-Check out the public parks. Stickman reckons its a great day out walking around Lumphini
-2 hour massage. make a point to go to a different area each time
-Gym
-Take a bus trip to the beach now and again or to some area a few hours from your appartment, even staying the night is affordable
-Get off at different BTS stops and walk around the area looking for things of interest
-Take up muay thai..many schools i am told and you can also use this to get an ed visa
-Golf driving range. Can hire clubs and buy buckets of balls,Not expensive like back home
-Visit an orphange and hand out some clothes and chocolate bars (ive only read that but havent got around to it myself)
-If in BK, check for what conventions are on at the big centres (queen sirikit and Meuang Thong Thani. all is online
-Buy a cooker and make your own food. Go to markets and search out ingredients and have a farang cookup or curry..maybe ask a thai around to sample the food (but usually its a tough ask getting thais to even try anything farang!)

Anyway thats just the few i can remember right now, but with all the others so far mentioned..internet, tV, Studying thai language, eating, drinking and chasing skirt and i dont see how anyone can be bored here.

On my walking excursions to different areas i recently found and arts and craft shop with not only guitar accessories but very cheap painting supplies, which is something ive always wanted to take up but probably wont have the time

What spare time?  I find I've been just as busy retired as what I was when I was working, always something to do if you include time riding yer Bike, in yer garden and on the Web.  Never needed to spend any time in Bars. Restaurants sometimes but never Bars. I prefer mates to come round for a Beer or Wine or two.

The Blades are off to Wembley for the play off final, I think it will be against Huddersfield.

With the 4 strikers that got the goals over the season out of the team, the lone man up front Chris Porter, managed to score the only goal of the match.

I'm not sure when the final is but I hope that the key players that were missing ( Cresswell) and taken off injured ( Macdonald ) can recover in time.

One game away from promotion......United have failed in a play off situation in the last 5 attempts.

Maybe, just maybe, this will be our turn.

#5280913 The Lower League Thread

Posted soihok on 2012-05-07 18:48:08

Cheers for the response MB. Really appreciate a very sensible and level headed post.

The damage was done the game before last when we lost at home to Stevenage, who we haven't beat this season.

Truth be told, if we as a team/club can't beat Stevenage and even Exeter away, then its obvious that we aint in anyway good enough for the Championship. Saying that, we did manage to achieve 90 points, so lets say may the best team win the playoffs.

As I have said in my earlier posts, I would love to see both Sheffield clubs to gain promotion this year, without the need for the Blades to go through the playoffs. However, this is the way it is, I don't think we are at present good enough to achieve promotion and to avoid embarrassment next year, its Div 1 for Sheff Utd next season.

Football (and indeed life also) is full of "if only",s so I'm going to say "don't go there sister !" But Ched's removal has had a huge impact on the performances of late, and I've listened to most games over the internet on Radio Sheffield.

So mate, again, well done and I'm happy that at least one Sheffield club is up.

At least we can look forward to playing Doncaster next year.

Cheers

Well done to Wednesday, great run of results towards the end of the season has put them up.

Sheffield United have to face the playoffs, but I don't expect them to get past the first round.

On behalf of all across the other side, thanks siohok.

I wanted to post before but felt it wasn,t right under the circumstances and most certainly didn,t want to appear like I was gloating ect. cause I,m not.

I can reassure you that most supporters are rooting for you and wanting you to join us in the Championship next season.

I will be hoping you get the rub of the green and there is a joint celebration.

Again I wanted to post a good luck message for you on Sunday morning but thought it best to wait for a reaction from yourself.

Had I been in your shoes I,d have felt like sh*t as indeed we did when we lost that deciding game to Crystal Palace.

I watched it at Meadowhall and I was upset for ages, it was a terrible feeling on the final whistle, I was walking about like a zombie afterwards.

My wish is that you go one better in the play offs and get the deserved promotion your close finish  warrants.

We need you for the six pointer battles and all the banter #&^*&^%$@#@ that goes with it, especially at the local family doo,s Posted Image

I am amazed and heartened at just how much genuine support and empathy there is from my end of the city..............Brilliant IMHO

Please do us all a favour then, get the results and clinch the double we all wish for and want.
