T-Mobile (U S A) Re-Farming 1900 Mhz 3G

2012-05-24 16:48:43

Of interest to those who travel to the U.S., T-Mobile is re-farming 1900 Mhz 3G, gained from AT&T as part of the fall-out, so this will allow another PAYG 3G option, in addition to AT&T. There are confirmed reports that some places have already been lit up: Pittsburgh, New Orleans.

On Dec. 19, T-Mobile’s official AT&T breakup release stated what —besides the $3 billion— T-Mobile would get:

As part of the break-up fee, T-Mobile USA will receive a large package of AWS mobile spectrum in 128 Cellular Market Areas (CMAs), including 12 of the top 20 markets (Los Angeles, Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, Washington, Boston, San Francisco, Phoenix, San Diego, Denver, Baltimore and Seattle). The UMTS roaming agreement for the U.S. in T-Mobile USA’s favor has a term of over seven years and will allow the company to improve its footprint significantly among the U.S. population and offer its customers better broadband coverage for mobile communications services in the future. Population coverage will increase from 230 million potential customers at present to 280 million. As a result of the agreement with AT&T, coverage will be extended to many regions of the U.S. in which T-Mobile USA previously had neither its own high-speed mobile communications network nor the associated roaming agreements.

T-Mobile Statement Highlights Network Refarming For iPhone Customers
April 9, 2012 David Beren 196 Comments

AT&T’s recently announced policy for unlocking iPhones is good news, but there is no company more capable of reaping the rewards of AT&T’s new policy other than T-Mobile. With T-Mobile’s network refarming, existing inventory of Micro-SIMs and value priced offerings, T-Mobile is perfectly positioned to attract angry AT&T customers. In fact, T-Mobile released a statement to 9to5Mac earlier today on this very subject:

Today we have more than one million unlocked iPhones running on our network.  T-Mobile currently offers microSIMs for customers who already have a GSM phone they want to use on the T-Mobile network, including an iPhone. In order to set up an unlocked iPhone on T-Mobile’s network, customers simply need to purchase a microSIM card and select a T-Mobile Value plan that suits their needs.

T-Mobile’s Value plans enable customers who bring their own smartphone, such as the iPhone, to save money. For example, T-Mobile’s Value family plan with unlimited talk, unlimited text and unlimited data with 2 GB of high-speed data is just $49.99 per line for two lines.

In addition, we will continue to deliver more value to customers as we expand and modernize our 4G network. Beginning this year, we will introduce HSPA+ service in our 1900 MHz PCS spectrum. When we do, our 4G network will be compatible with a broader range of devices, including the iPhone.

Considering a comparable AT&T plan will run about $150 before taxes, I’d say T-Mobile well positioned to attract upset AT&T customers.

Google Vanquishes Oracle In Android Patent Fight

2012-05-24 16:37:24

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- In one of Silicon Valley's landmark court battles, Google appears to have won a big victory over Oracle.

A jury on Wednesday cleared Google of violating any of Oracle's patents with its Android mobile software.

Oracle had claimed that Google's Android infringes two patents that Oracle holds on its Java software, a ubiquitous programming language powering everything from phones to websites.

The jury found otherwise.

"Today's jury verdict that Android does not infringe Oracle's patents was a victory not just for Google but the entire Android ecosystem," a Google (GOOG, Fortune 500) spokesman said.

Oracle v. Google: After the jury verdict, what happens next?
Last year's reports said Oracle could extract up to $6.1 billion from Google over patent infringement. That didn't happen. Here's what's next.

by Declan McCullagh  May 23, 2012 2:11 PM PDT
The real impact of today's jury verdict in Oracle's long-running and -- as we now know -- overhyped lawsuit against Google means that the case is basically over. U.S. District Judge William Alsup of the U.S. District Court of Northern California dismissed the 10 remaining jurors, who served for about a month, and sent them home. What happens next depends on how much more money Oracle CEO Larry Ellison wants to spend on litigation. Ellison could find a reason to appeal Oracle's whopper of a loss on its allegations of patent infringement. Or his attorneys could ask the trial judge to overturn the verdict.

Alsup is hardly likely to agree to the latter. And if Oracle chooses to appeal to the Ninth Circuit, it's facing the steepest of uphill climbs: a U.S. legal tradition that protects jury findings unless there's compelling evidence that jurors acted clearly erroneously. No less an authority than the U.S. Supreme Court has said that, once the jury rules, the losing party is "not free to relitigate the factual dispute in a reviewing court."

Also note that the Motorola acquisition has closed, so this should give Google enough patent power to shut down all the ridiculous Apple lawsuits, or at least keep the Apple lawyers busy. ;)

We’ve acquired Motorola Mobility

May 22, 2012 at 7:53 PM
The phones in our pockets have become supercomputers that are changing the way we live. It’s now possible to do things we used to think were magic, or only possible on Star Trek—like get directions right from where we are standing; watch a video on YouTube; or take a picture and share the moment instantly with friends.

It’s why I’m excited to announce today that our Motorola Mobility deal has closed. Motorola is a great American tech company that has driven the mobile revolution, with a track record of over 80 years of innovation, including the creation of the first cell phone. We all remember Motorola’s StarTAC, which at the time seemed tiny and showed the real potential of these devices. And as a company who made a big, early bet on Android, Motorola has become an incredibly valuable partner to Google.

Sanjay Jha, who was responsible for building the company and placing that big bet on Android, has stepped down as CEO. I would like to thank him for his efforts and am tremendously pleased that he will be working to ensure a smooth transition as long-time Googler Dennis Woodside takes over as CEO of Motorola Mobility.

Narrow Victory For Oracle In Android Suit

May 7 (Bloomberg) -- Google Inc., the largest Web-search provider, infringed copyrights for Oracle Corp.’s technology in developing Android software running on more than 300 million mobile devices, a federal jury said.

The 12-member panel in San Francisco, however, was unable to come to a unanimous verdict on whether Google had made “fair use” of Oracle’s intellectual property.

The decision prevents Oracle from seeking damages for all but nine lines of computer code on Android, out of 15 million total lines, that the jury found were copied from Oracle, U.S. District Judge William Alsup said today. Oracle is seeking $1 billion in damages.

There has been zero finding of liability on copyright, the issue of fair use is still in play,” Alsup said after the verdict was read.
