Atm/Debit Cards. Is This True?

2011-08-25 19:24:24

Hello,

A guy I met was telling me how he got pickpoketed on Pattaya beach at night. He thought he was actually doing well with the two Chinese girls he had just met. But while he thought they were feeling him up, they were actually trying to get his wallet. They couldn't as it was secured to his pocket with a loop. They did manage to get his ATM card out however. When he realized what had happened he tried calling his bank but no luck there.

So he turned up first thing the next morning to get the card cancelled - Thai Military bank. His worry was that they would take the card to a gold shop and purchase as much as they could - his balance was about 200,000 baht. I said, don't they have to know the PIN for that. He said no. Even for such amounts? He also said no.

This came as a surprise to me. Is this true? Or is it just some banks like the Thai Military. TIA.

Nice one:

"MurdochAlert warns you whenever you visit one of the 100+ Murdoch Family-controlled websites. If you're not ready to block them all, MurdochAlert can warn you instead. Also it's handy for identifying news sources controlled by the Murdoch Family."

Are Post Offices & Embassies Open Tomorrow The 17Th?

2011-05-16 20:32:30

Hello, hearing of the Buddhist holiday tomorrow made me wonder if its just a religious thing or if it's a complete public holiday and extends to the closure of post offices and embassies. I'm in Pattaya and need to go to Bangkok and was planning on tomorrow but wanted to make sure before I leave. Thanks in advance.

Passport Troubles In Manila

2011-03-16 13:59:11

A friend has lost his Australian passport and is getting sheer hell from the embassy in Manila. After having to prove his financial well being (to show he didn't sell it!), not only do they want to see his birth certificate but they say they also require the birth certificate of one of his parents - ridiculous, especially considering they're both deceased! So far he's only dealt with local staff and after exercising his rights requesting to speak to someone higher up (preferably an Aussie) they told him to piss off.

So I was wondering if anybody might know if there is some online resource that may be able to offer some guidance. TIA

Linux Messed Up My Mbr

2010-12-30 18:05:39

SuSe was the distro that did it, but just a bit of background info beforehand. October last year I downloaded two distros, SuSe and Ubuntu, to try out on my new laptop which I planned to get in Delhi. I then proceeded to Goa where my plan was to learn Linux while spending a few months by the beach. The laptop had Windows 7 Home Basic on it and I wanted a dual boot system. So I started with Ubuntu (after booting from the live cd with both). Everything went smoothly for some time until it came up with an "installation aborted" error. Started the whole thing over again but same problem. So the only thing to do was to reboot into Win 7. During the boot process it gave a message saying there were errors on C drive and it would check the disk. That went as normal and the boot into Win 7 completed.

So I thought, that didn't work so I'll now try Suse. Some days later I did just that and after about 40 mins got a similar error message. This time when I tried to reboot back into Win 7 I got a black screen saying "no operating system found". The MBR was kaput. Luckily I had made some recovery disks so was able to reinstall it, though it took some hours.

I don't want to have to go through all this again but at the same time would really like to have a dual boot system. And now I have the time and the proper connection to try out another distro. Any suggestions?
