#5297776 There Is A Real Person Behind Each Nick!

Posted jamesbrock on 2012-05-13 20:07:44

Good post Smokie.

I actually just had a hissy-fit in another thread; some new guy posts a question, and all he got was abuse! It really gets on my nerves when people who don't have anything constructive (or humorous) to add will just abuse a poster because he has a low post count. I bet 99% of time, these keyboard warriors wouldn't say a thing if they were in person.

Me, I'm much the same as kevjohn - I'll go out of my way to help someone, and agree that if you can't say anything nice, don't stay anything at all. Been living in Samui for 8 months, but it's lost its magic, and I'm heading up to Chiang Mai in a little under three weeks for a change of scenery, and a change of lifestyle.

#3906010 Would You Like The Option To Turn Off The Reputation Feature For You?

Posted flying on 2010-09-25 07:06:31

The one thing that I do find odd about this whole rating system is this....

On this forum it is disallowed if you name & shame anything.... Even if it is a legit documented offense

Yet a system such as this is basically a name & shame system isn't it?
I do not keep track but a couple of times I saw folks get a lot of reds & clicked on their name.

It then shows you their profile & reads something like Reputation POOR And that is for just 11 reds.

So I wondered...What does it say if you have 20-30-40 reds? Does it say something even worse than that?

Is REPUTATION POOR a name & shame? Yes I think so. So folks equate Reputation with a persons honesty etc.
Seems as much a name & shame as a legitimate complaint about something someone else did. Yet that is not allowed?

As I said it is their sandbox & they make the rules but it would be nice to see less of such a double standard.

BTW...Can a Thai citizen/ forum member sue you over this? Or is that limited to businesses?

#3897069 For A Culture So Obsessed With Food

Couldn't agree more. The idea of eating western style in smart surroundings, with water views or on a terrace by candlelight, belongs in western countries. The truly great thing about eating out here is that there is so much choice and regional variation. Also, not much unnecessary regulation.  Thais love food, and graze their way through the day, cheaply and mostly without health problems. I find food here is more fresh, has not been 'homogenised' to death, and doesn't need an 'ambiance'or be unrealistically expensive to make it taste well. Many of our visitors think our province - Nakhon Sawan, has the best food in Thailand, but there are no really smart, expensive restaurants. A piece of trivia - Thai is one of the worlds' 6 or 7 distinct cuisines.

I have to take some issue with your post.  First, Thais do suffer from health problems, some associated with food.  The lack of refrigeration among street stalls has resulted in problems, and the continual reuse of cooking oil for weeks at a time is a health risk.

Now I happen to like the street food, and I do eat it.  But I steer away from foods which would have a higher degree of potential problems.

But to dismiss more expensive restaurants is throwing away a huge part of the enjoyment you can have here.  Just as in New York, for example, the fact that you can enjoy a great hotdog, gyro, or steak sandwich on the street does not mean that a trip to Peter Lugers for steak is not a true pleasure, or just because you can get delicious noodles in Tokyo on the cheap does not mean that you should not enjoy a true sukiyaki in Rappongi.

A well prepared meal in Thailand can be an exciting culinary adventure.  And Thai food is more than just the 20 or 30 dishes commonly served at small streetside restaurants.

As far as ambiance, what is wrong with that?  If I want a romantic evening, a nice table overlooking the river with an attentive staff is rather more enjoyable than eating on plastic chairs on Soi Umptyfratz with amangy soi dog begging for scraps.

As far as 6 or 7 distinct cuisines?  Where did that come from?  Thailand has three generally accepted cuisines on its own.  China must have more than a dozen.  And so on.

Eating well with well prepared food and in nice surroundings belongs in all countries.  Just as eating good food on the cheap belongs in all countries.  I don't think you should limit eating in Thailand to any one particular type of venue.

w11Guy,  Well l have sat back and read your posts. You talk complete bollocks. I visualize that you are 21 and know it all but understand nothing. From an oldy that has watched my country bend over backwards for foreigners l am quite pissed off. Change, perhaps yes but change for it's natives, which is not happening. My mum and dad passed away last year, both fuming at the way the country has gone when THEY had to fight to keep England, England. I will not argue with you here cos it's pointless but people like you make many angry. ;)
Rants about foreigners coming to his home country and goes to live in someone else's ....... Not the sharpest tool in the box eh!
He may have a Thai wife in which case i sure youd agree he isnt being a hypocrite as they have to live somewhere, or maybe he is highly skilled and will come here on a work visa which will expire once his contract is over, or finally maybe he is a wealthy retiree who will again come here on a visa and should he not meet the criteria of this will again be sent packing .... but he will not be subsidised by the Thai taxpayer under any of the aforementioned criteria.

Now Britain has opened its borders to 500 million Europeans many from extremely corrupt poor nations, who without doubt suppress the wages of the average British worker, and then there is the filth from Somalia and Pakistan who have no intention of integrating, furthermore 8 out of 10 Somalians are living in social housing.

Maybe youre not the sharpest tool in the box for needing someone to spell out the differences.

An enlightening post which has made my day. :)

Thought me, my mum and dad were alone in our thoughts.

A question to others. Why don't the swarms of all nationalities trying to cram into the tiny UK try and make their own countries better for THEIR people and families. :ermm:.

#3824910 A Man Walks Into The Thaivisa Pub ....

Posted Familyonthemove on 2010-08-19 15:28:14

Man walks into the Thaivisa pub and sees his mates sitting in the corner,  bottles of Chang and Tiger in hand and trays of nuts on the table.  He reflects on what a diverse group they make.  There’s the old Asian hand with his long term Thai companion resting her pretty head on his broad shoulder, then there’s the young back-packer, mid way through a tale of his adventures with in tuk-yuk, and the ex-pat businessman peering over his Blackberry at the Aussie traveller who’s discussing the best visa run routes.  As he walks towards his friends he start a conversation;

“Hi chaps, did you see the match last night, what a cracking game”

“We talked about footy last week, can’t you use the search function”, snaps the Businessman as looks up from his Blackberry, “You’re only talking about football because you know my wife’s from Isaan and doesn’t like ferrang sports, you know she only follows Takraw you racist b***ard, and she’s a qualified lawyer you know” shouts the old Thai “who you calling a ferrang”, snaps the Aussie, “that’s an insult you know”.

“Sorry guys, only trying to be friendly” stutters the startled visitor.  “Well don’t even try, this is the ThaiVisa Pub and every night is flight night, so p**s off” shouts the young backpacker.

“Not every night, that’s just a dam_n lie” says the Aussie, “if you'd done your research properly before speaking you’d know that Tuesday nights are Ladies nights where we ask where to get a decent manicure and then lie to each other about the best salons”.

“Sod this, I’m off” says the visitor.  “Typical!” shouts the old hand “and try not to burn the pub down as you leave, it took us weeks to rebuild the place after your last tantrum”.  “That wasn’t me, I just happened to bring my flame thrower in for the military surplus bring and buy sale and it went off accidentally” says the visitor trying his best to sound innocent.

“That’s it, you’re all barred …. again” shouts the barman

There were several posts that were deleted that referred to Jews and Israelis as the same thing. It is a rather common belief among the anti-Semitic "community" as is the dishonest tactic of pretending that they do not lump them all together in the interest of "fair" debate. :whistling:

In the PC world we now find ourselves in, it would appear if you arent pro the Israeli gov't actions you are immediately branded with the anti-Semetic tag.
Quite ironic really when the same tag could be applied to the Israeli gov't.
