In Topic: Need Visa Run Or Can Get Extension?

If he was born with a Thai parent he should have citizenship from birth but will need a birth certificate from the Thai Embassy in country of birth.  With that he can obtain Thai passport/home register entry and Thai ID card (if of age).  Once listed on home register he can easily obtain one year extensions of stay even if entry is on Japanese passport.  For now your advise to obtain tourist visa seems to be the best choice.  Make sure he has that Embassy birth report as believe that is the critical first step in the process.

Japan does allow holding dual nationality?

Yes, he's working on getting his Thai citizenship. I actually just walk him through all the paper he needs to get for that. His mom needs to get her Thai ID since she's been gone for so long. And he needs to wait for his birth cert from Japan.  Then figure out who's head of their Tha biin baan. lol

Not sure if Japan allows it or makes ppl give up eventually, but they never know if you dont mention it. lol   Reason he's doing this, is because he wants to stay in Thailand for a couple years. I dont know if he'll ever go back to Japan or Canada ( he was residing there till his vacation)

I was just at the dentist today... had 2 wisdom teeth removed. lol

I like CM Dental Clinic. www.cmdentalclinic.com.

They lady there does everything. Its crazy. She speaks really really good English and her staff does as well. the site tell you everything you need to know. The clinic is clean and up to date and really professional.  The only thing I wish was.... that she gave me valium or something strong. In so much pain now. But thats hospital meds.... I guess I'm gonna go to McCormick and see if they give me something :/
Its on Charoenmuang Rd a block from the super highway.

In Topic: Chiang Mai Vs Luang Prabang

Luang Prabang is pretty but the cons for long term stay  FAR out weighs the Pros.  If youre going to live in Luang Prabang then you must except that you will live with only the most basic amenities.
If youre going to live in Lao PDR - live in Vientiane. That way you have multiple options of getting out of the country quickly if need raises.  Like alot of people stated, If you need a hospital, in Luang Prabang there's no way you'll get a good one with out crossing over into Thailand.  At least in Vientiane, if there's a medical emergency,  you can be stabilized  for the trip to Udon Thani.
If you want to live in Lao but have Thai standard of living.... Live in Issan area - Udon or Khon khaen.

Chiang Mai would be where you want to live... although CMX is lacking as a flight hub, but much better then  Luang Prabang which is almost exclusively serviced by the over priced Lao Air.

Access to hospitals
specialist doctors
dental care
expat/foreigner community
night life for all types of people
travel access
shopping
postal and parcel service
banking with internet
access to import items such as  basic things like food from America and europe
transportation...
good internet (not the greatest like Japan or Korea, but Thai Internet FAR FAR 10000000x better then Lao's "broadband")
ect...
