"We had been tracking the gang for two months."

What, exactly, does this mean?

It means they had received complaints and reports about bag snatches for two months. But didnt know/bother to look for them till it was handed to them on a plate and they had someone they could beat a confession out of.

So, letting a gang run rampant for 2 months is "tracking" them.  Posted Image Posted Image Posted Image Posted Image Posted Image

I'm sure 17 victims is a conservative figure.  In reality, I'm sure there would be a lot more, and this is only one gang of how many on the island????

I was asked to comment on sex tourist, and I did.  I am not going on about it.

I've traveled Thailand and South East Asia, extensively.  I actually have been to all the places you mention.

Why are you comparing one small tropical island of Malatsia, to EVERYWHERE in Thailand????  Malaysia has many places of interest and things to see and do, they are not all on Langkawi.  Just like there are no temples built on dormant volcanos on Koh Samet.  Malaysia is an Islamic nation.  You have been in a temple inThailand, did you go into a mosque in Malaysia/Langkawi?  If not, why not?  Malaysia also has major events that Thailand does not have. Eg. a Formula 1 grand prix.

You will not give an example of a "far more interesting places in Thailand to visit" so I will use one that you mentioned, Samui.  Can you tell me why Samui is a more interesting place to visit????
You are like a dog with a bone, you are made wellcome in buddist temples, any time i a have been to a
mosque all you get are funny looks, the answer is no i have been in one and i have nothing against muslin
people the majority are nice people
Personally i have never been scammed here but i do not hang around red light districts late at night
and get drunk, thats asking for trouble anywhere in the world, more often than not the scammers are not Thai
If you love Langkawi and Malaysia so much why dont you go and live there, nothings stopping you
Its very cheap to have a holiday in Asai if you want to see something different visit Cape Town, victoria Falls
and Kruger national park thats a real holiday

Peter, you are "made to feel welcome in a Buddhist temple" but only get "funny looks" in a mosque, but you state you have never been in a mosque????????

I may move to Langkawi one day.  I rule nothing out in this region.  It may only take a change in visa laws here and you, me and many others could be looking for a new place to live.  Who knows the future.  Currently, for me, the good still outweighs the bad on Phuket, but I do not know how I will feel in a few years time.  I've repeatedly stated, in my opinion, the island is heading in the wrong direction for being a pleasant place for tourist and expats.

I have been to South Africa.  I've been to the places you have mentioned, but my favourite SA places were Jeffery's Bay and Stellenbosch.

My point is Peter, you went to Langkawi expecting to sample all Malaysia has to offer, in one spot, on a small tropical island.  Many go to Langkawi to unwind and relax, just like many go to small Thai islands for the same.  It's not party central, a cultural hub, their capital city, their political hub, religious hub etc etc.  It is what it is - a very small, quiet, tropical island.

As I type this post, I see there has been yet ANOTHER violent robbery on Phuket involving a stabbing.  This robbery occured nowhere near the "red light area" involving drunks.

I'm happy to hear what makes Samui a much more interesting island to visit?

Its Woof Woof , Sumui has great beaches and good hotels on the beach front
plenty of reasonably priced good restaurants and lots of smiling people
Hostile looks you get from people standing outside mosques, only a few burt that puts me of going in
How many mosques have you been inside of
What countries in africa did you stay in and what hotels and safari lodges since you have been there
Thailand is a great place to live, if you prefer Langkawi thats fine, we all have our own choice

One of the most memerable mosques I have been in is The Blue Mosque in Istanbul - Turkey.  Spectacular.  You can google it.  No "funny looks" - it's a major tourist attraction.

As for Africa, I have been to Egypt, Kenya, Uganda,Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, Zimbabwe,  Botswana, Namibia, Lesotho and South Africa.  I loved my time in Africa.

I've been to Samui a few times.  I like Samui.  There are many islands in Thailand that are just like Langkawi - small, quiet, no prostitues and drunk tourist etc etc.  Would you like, or dislike, these islands????  I gave one example in Koh Samet.  You probaly should have viewed Langkawi in the same light.

I like Langkawi for these same reasons.  It's a nice break from Phuket and an easy visa run.

I still enjoy living on Phuket, but for me, I have doubts about what Phuket will be like in another 5 to 10 years.  If it becomes unsafe, unaffordable, lacks infastructure, political instability, visa law changes etc etc etc - I will re-assess my choice of residence and will move.  Vietnam, Bali and Langkawi will all be considered.   Anyway, that's a bit off topic.
