BANGKOK: -- A thief used an explosive device to blast open an ATM machine in Bangkok’s Prawet district early Wednesday and decamped with some cash, police and witnesses said.

The explosion occurred at 3am at a Bangkok Bank ATM machine at the car park in front of the Tesco Lotus superstore, Krungthep Kreetha branch, in Saphan Sung subdistrict.

Thongthiew Chuenkham, 58, a security officer of Siam Warin Shipping International Co, which is on the opposite side of the road, told police that he heard a loud explosion at around 3am and found the ATM machine on fire. He saw a motorcyclist fleeing the scene.

Prawet Police Station was alerted to the incident at 4.30am. Police officers rushed to the scene and cordoned off the blast area for forensic officers to gather evidence.

Polwat Yaibua, 23, who lives in a boarding house next to the store, said he heard a loud explosion. When he looked out of his room window, he saw a man pulling a metal box out of the ATM machine.

Prawet Police Station chief Pol Colonel Alongkorn Sirisongkram said the bomb apparently was powerful and appeared to have been placed at the back of the ATM.

Bank officials have yet to check how much of cash the thief had made off with.

So at least two people heard and saw the action at 3am, but the police were alerted an hour and a half later.

ATM robber makes off with Bt314,100

By The Nation

The thief who blasted opened an ATM in Bangkok’s Prawet district early on Wednesday took away Bt314,100 in cash, Metropolitan Police chief Pol Lt-General Sanit Mahathavorn said.

Luckily for the thief, all CCTVs in the area – including the camera inside the Bangkok Bank ATM at the car park in front of the Tesco Lotus Krungthep Kreetha superstore in Saphan Sung subdistrict – were not functioning well, Sanit said.

He said the blast was not an act of terror but was done to steal money from the ATM.

The robber took the box containing Bt1,000 notes and Bt100 notes but apparently forgot about the box containing Bt500 notes.

Sanit said the robber definitely had knowledge about bomb making, but it was not yet known whether he was or had been a police or military officer.

Sanit said the robber used a black Honda Click motorcycle without a licence plate.

Pol Colonel Kamthorn Uicharoen, deputy commander of the Patrol and Special Operation Division, said the bomb was made with TNT and was detonated with a lit fuse. The bomb contained about 200 to 300 grams of explosives, he added.

Not functioning well?

Were they tired or ill?

How about inoperable.

One has to have a grudging respect for the directness of the crime, much more of the Butch Casssidy than the gutless vermin who sit in pokey rooms at a computer, ripping off millions from people,s accounts !

Bt300,000 stolen as ATM blown up in an ‘unprecedented’ attack

By THE NATION

Explosive Ordnance Disposal officials inspect the damage to an ATM after an explosion near a Lotus Express convenience store in Soi Krungthep Kreetha 35, Saphan Sung district, in the early hours of yesterday.

BANGKOK: -- A THIEF who blasted open an ATM in Bangkok’s Saphan Sung district in the early hours of yesterday made off with Bt314,100 in cash, Metropolitan Police chief Pol Lt-General Sanit Mahathavorn said.

Every surveillance camera in the area – including the camera inside the Bangkok Bank ATM at the car park in front of the Tesco Lotus Krungthep Kreetha superstore in Saphan Sung subdistrict – was malfunctioning, Sanit said.

The explosion, which took place at 3am, was unprecedented in an ATM robbery in Thailand, Sanit said, but he added that it was not believed to have been an act of terrorism or politically motivated.

However, First Army Region |commander Lt-General Apirat Kongsompong, who oversees security in the capital, said it was premature to jump to conclusions regarding political links to the incident.

The machine was seriously damaged and the thief absconded with boxes containing Bt1,000 and Bt100 notes but apparently forgot the box containing Bt500 notes.

Sanit said the robber definitely had knowledge about bomb-making, but it was not known whether the suspect had police or military experience.

Sanit said the robber drove a black Honda Click motorcycle that did not have a licence plate.

A witness said a black-clad suspect wearing a helmet, who appeared to be about 30, spent five minutes setting off the bomb and robbing the ATM.

Pol Colonel Kamthorn Uicharoen, deputy commander of the Patrol and Special Operation Division, said the powerful bomb was made with either TNT or C4 and had been detonated with a lit fuse. The bomb contained about 200 to 300 grams of explosive material, he added.

Evidence at the crime scene and the theft taking place at night suggested that the bomber did not intend to harm anyone and was simply after the money, Kamthorn said, but he added that the initial investigation had not indicated any suspects.

Thongthiew Chuenkham, 58, a security officer at Siam Warin Shipping International Co, which is on the opposite side of the road, told police that he heard a loud explosion at about 3am and found the ATM on fire. He saw a motorcyclist fleeing the scene.

Prawet Police Station chief Pol Colonel Alongkorn Sirisongkram said the bomb apparently was powerful and appeared to have been placed at the back of the ATM.

Bank officials have not confirmed how much money the thief stole.

Great job journos. Now everyone knows how to blow up ATMs and get 300,000 baht. 250 grams of TNT. Lets see how many of them get blown up now.

Will this create an effort to repair surveillance and security cameras, probably not!

All CCTV's not working. Sounds like an inside job.

Someone did well by not routinely checking the CCTVs.

Strange how many are found not working after a robbery, murder, etc.

Not that the left took place about  3 am but the police were not notified until  430

Surprising that a bomb went off and no one contacted police  Very strange
