Grandpa, grandson drown in Ratchaburi pond

By The Nation

A 60-year-old man and his grandson drowned in a pond behind their house in Ratchaburi’s Jom Bueng district on Thursday evening, police said.

Their bodies were retrieved from the bed of the four-metre-deep pond in Moo 8 village in Tambon Berkprai by scuba divers after the boy’s mother, Suphan Buachan, 31, alerted police.

The two victims were identified as Nan Buangam and Thanaphol Boonchan, 6.

The mother said the boy did not return home in the evening after he went to play at his grandfather’s house as was usual practice, so she went to look for him and found the grandpa's sandals and the boy's clothes at the edge of the pond.

Police believe the grandfather took the boy to bathe at the bank of the pond behind his house but the boy accidentally fell into the water, the grandfather tried to rescue him and both drowned.

Tough blow for the family. I am always amazed how many locals fish, wade and live around water and yet not know how to swim.

"Police believe the grandfather took the boy to bathe at the bank of the pond behind his house but the boy accidentally fell into the water, the grandfather tried to rescue him and both drowned"

Total conjecture - would not stand up in a real court of law.

Here is more conjecture, Grandad and grandson murdered and bodies thrown in pond.
Why did they have to be found by divers ? What was holding down their bodies from floating?
Most corpses have enough gas/air in them to make them float.

Thank you Mr Ironside.

Seems gas is not restricted to corpses.

Jesus.  60 years old and he couldn't swim?  At that age, I would assume it is likely he had bathed or swam in rivers and ponds many times in his life in his younger years?  Maybe not.  Maybe never learned to swim.  Maybe he was old and frail and slipped and fell, had a heart attack from the stress, etc.  By 6 years old I could dog paddle, swim under water, etc.  Thanks to my parents for providing an environment where I learned to swim.
