Liverpool jail's severely ill inmates at substantial risk, says psychiatrist

Severely ill inmates at Liverpool Prison often wait days to be seen because of poor care and a lack of staff, a senior psychiatrist says.

 

His assessment of mental healthcare, seen by BBC News, says staff shortages present a "substantial clinical risk". Separately, a review of the prison, published on Friday, says conditions are the worst inspectors have seen.

 

Lancashire Care, which runs healthcare at the jail, said it had spent significant sums on more staffing.

Why don’t they get the prisoners to clean the place and give them a bit of pocket money ?

Force the prisoners and give them nothing.  It's not a holiday camp.

The situation for those not incarcerated sounds bleak if reports about the state of the NHS are to be believed.

I think it will be less than 50 years until the first prisons are abolished as inhumane.  No matter what somebody does you can't have a modern state that imprisons people in concrete rooms for 23 hours a day.

 

I think the logical progression will be open prison towns, or even open prison countries.
