I'm not aware of any actual limit provided they are all appropriately registered.

Yes.

I have four current, active with each provider. There may be some theoretical limit which catches the providers, regulators, governments "eyes"? http://news.abs-cbn.com/overseas/06/13/17/400000-sim-card-chinese-click-farm-busted-in-thailand

Further, some providers offer additional services like:

Up to five SIMs with one number (only one active for voice at any one time, the others used for data) http://www.ais.co.th/postpaid/multisimpackage/en/

Up to five numbers aggregated into a single phone with a single, primary SIM for calls/texts over GSM or WiFi. https://www.dtac.co.th/en/info/dtac-call.html

I recently bought 10 prepaid SIM cards from AIS and had them all registered in my name in one go.

Pretty sure there is no limit.
