NCPO has no ban on political party donations

Tanakorn Sangiam

BANGKOK, 12th October 2018 (NNT) - The NCPO has never prohibited political parties receiving donations, but the Election Commission can consider whether such acts are campaigning, says DPM.

Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam, speaking in regard to fundraising activities by the new Future Forward Party, said today that he doesn't see any conflict between this activity and orders made by the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO), as the issue is the responsibility of the Election Commission, which will decide whether the activity is actually campaigning.

He said that in fact no NCPO order forbids political parties from receiving donations or raising funds, and the recent order easing limits on political parties' activities, allows parties to collect membership and contribution fees.

All other money collected in addition to these categories can be reviewed by the Election Commission to see whether it is linked to political campaigning, concerning which the EC can consult the NCPO should they be unsure.

The DPM has further revealed the date of a formal discussion between the Prime Minister and politicians has not been set by the NCPO yet, as the Prime Minister is currently busy with his visits to foreign countries and other duties. The discussion could however take place next month.

In order for the NCPO to tell them what to decide.

That's the classic definition of 'passing the buck.'
