NEW YORK (Reuters) - Federal prosecutors in Manhattan on Friday asked a judge to sentence Michael Cohen, U.S. President Donald Trump's former personal lawyer, to a "substantial term of imprisonment" for paying an adult film star hush money on Trump's behalf and evading taxes.

Cohen, who has been cooperating with U.S. Special Counsel Robert Mueller's probe into possible collusion between Russia and Trump's 2016 election campaign, pleaded guilty to the charges in August.

Cohen pleaded guilty last week to a separate charge by Mueller's office that he lied to Congress about discussions over the construction of a proposed Trump Organization skyscraper in Moscow.

In a separate filing on Friday, Mueller's office said Cohen should serve any sentence imposed for that crime concurrently with the sentence imposed for the New York charges, saying he had gone to "significant lengths to assist the Special Counsel’s investigation."

The New York prosecutors said in their filing that Cohen should receive some credit for his cooperation with Mueller, but noted that he had not entered into a cooperation agreement with their office. They said his sentence should reflect a "modest" reduction from the roughly four to five years they said federal guidelines would suggest.

Cohen is scheduled to be sentenced next Wednesday by U.S. District Judge William Pauley in Manhattan on all of the charges to which he pleaded guilty. His lawyers have asked that he receive no jail time, saying he has cooperated extensively with Mueller and New York prosecutors and has taken responsibility for his actions.

Trump, who has called Mueller's investigation a "witch hunt" and repeatedly denied wrongdoing, said earlier this week that Cohen had lied about Trump's business dealings in Russia to get reduced jail time.

Mueller's office has charged or secured convictions against more than two dozen Russian nationals and entities, as well as a number of Trump's associates. The Manhattan prosecutors' charges against Cohen stemmed from a referral from Mueller's team.

Russia has denied meddling in the 2016 U.S. election.

IMHO, Cohen was caught between a rock and a hard place.  For him to enter into a cooperation agreement with the SDNY, he would have to agree to admit and cooperate on all of the criminal dealings that he had had, not just those that involved Trump.  The SDNY is very strict regarding this issue, GUiliani knows this.  He would have to admit to his criminal dealings with all of the locals and cooperate with the SDNY in prosecuting them. If he did this his and his family's lives would not be worth a wooden nickle.  He pleaded guilty to lying to congress and cooperated with Mueller in hopes of getting his sentence reduced, but total cooperation with the SDNY was not in the cards.  He has accepted that he will have to serve prison time and wants to start that ASAP to get it over with.  I imagine that the "local" bosses have recommended that he do this, not cooperate and that his family will be taken care of while he serves his time.

Cohen comes across as a real slime ball and a long sentence is warranted. He has also provided the first real evidence (assuming he isn't lying as per usual) of attempted collusion with the proposal for Trump to meet Putin at the UN. Since it never took place it didn't impact the election but there was some intent at some level in the campaign to explore 'synergy'.

Sounds like he's been a very  bad boy.

"Mr. Trump sought on Friday to dismiss the news, claiming it “Totally clears the President. Thank you!”"

Police find human meat in Hannibal Lecter’s freezer and interrupt Hannibal nibbling on a garlic roasted human ear. As they’re dragging him off, he tweets, “Totally clears Hannibal, Thank You!”

Cohen was sentenced today to 3 years, far better than the 51 - 61 month guideline.  I imagine that he is "satisfied" with the sentence and wants to begin serving it ASAP.  It can be further reduced as he continues to cooperate with Mueller under the provisions of Rule 35.

I said he is "satisfied" because he knew that he was going to get jail time by not fully cooperating with the SDNY and agree to a cooperation agreement where he would have to tell all about all of the criminal activities that he knew about and who was involved and cooperate in their prosecution.   I suspect that the local"mob boss" gave him permission to tell all that he wanted involving Trump, but told him if he spilled the beans about all that he knew about local criminal activities he and his family might suffer badly.  Just looked what just happened to Whitey Bulger, an informant on the mob,.  He was beat to death with a "lock in a sock" the day after he was transferred to the general population of a federal prison and oddly the cameras covering the area where he was killed were not operational.  I think that Cohen made the right choice for the safety of him and his family!
